What troubles me is the big picture. If the world has to deal with failed states that are narco states, terrorist states and pirate states today, what will things be like in 20 years or so if climate change continues to degrade the environment and destroy resources? It sounds like we're headed towards a period of extended chaos.

You are right in that the WORLD has to deal with failed states. The US has had a go with mixed results. I wonder if we would be happy with the Chinese stepping up to the mark and sorting out some policing problems?

Wouldn't it be great if the UN could actually be a substantial military force for good and sort out a couple of problems.

Yeah the Illuminated ones would love that.

Does Hegelian dialectic ring a bell?

That's what I thought, you know perfectly well how Hegel's problem-reaction-solution plays out... yawn.

Arrr! I says dialectical pirates have boarded and taken over this scurvy thread, says I. Avast, ye swabs. Answer like a pirate or I'll have ye keelhauled!

    (Arrr!)

This is Obama's first foreign policy success. He approved the shooting of the pirates.

he wouldn't have if the operation had gone 'tits up'. It would have been a military operation decided by the command at the scene.

The next worry is for the next American the pirates capture. I don't think there will be much in the way of negotiation. Just an execution.
