"BlogCatalog.com, the fastest-growing social network for bloggers on the Internet,"

We're the fastest growing social network for bloggers?
  8. TonyB
Have you seen the average weight gain of a BC member over the past 6 months?
    1. DocNicole
I am guessing a pound a month average.

Agencies like Amnesty are definitely reaping the benefits of blogs and social networks. As it should be.

One thing you might want to create, although I'm sure people could do it themselves, is a non javascript image of the campaign. I couldn't put it in my Darfur blog because it is wordpress.com, javascrip isn't allowed.

Those with WP can also use photo bucket like I did just change the first urlin the code to blog catalog's.

It really is and if you look at their home page, www.amnestyusa.org/, under Latest News, the Bloggers Unite event has been featured there for almost a week.

Bloggers Unite exposure has increased because of their sponsorship

I really appreciate that each time blogcatalog members have united that people's lives were changed for the better.

We have a Group dedicated to Bloggers Unite at www.blogcatalog.com/group/bloggers-unite/discuss where you can learn more about the history of Bloggers Unite and discuss how we can create even more impact on May 15th.

If you know of a blogger who isn't a member of BlogCatalog, please let them know they can participate without having to join BlogCatalog. Also, if you have a friend in your local media, contact them and tell them about the event.

Sounds great! I wasn't aware of this initiative but would be glad to participate on May 15th. Good luck everyone!
  29. Theresa111
I shall require someone to phone me to go over the "Hows" of adding the widget to my skdd wordpress site, as i still do not understand how to do this.

By the way, this seems the most appropriate subject to write about. The state of the world, the sad part, is overwhelming. Please, Tony, let me know in my shout box. Thanks!

Now blogging these days is getting better. Blogging about Human Rights is one way in making other people aware of their role and responsibilities in dealing with another person.
  31. kglim77
    GOOD NEWS for all bloggers!
    1. TonyB
It's great news for bloggers though reading some feedback I wonder about whether there are a large number of bloggers who don't think that this will make a difference.

I sense that some bloggers think, why should I blog, on May 15th, as no life will be changed and no one will listen.

      This simply is not true.

Words are powerful and have an impact.

Your words, on your blog, will be read by others. Your words have the power to cause another person to say enough is enough. And that person may share their newly found inspiration with another, and the chain of events may ultimately save a child's life, a family, a community, perhaps a nation, and since we are all connected, save our world.

If you read this, please join us on May 15th and blog about human rights.

You may feel that it won't matter if you don't blog. It does. Your voice is important. Together with thousands of bloggers we will change our world.

You may not see the direct results of the lives you touch. You can be sure though, that as a result of bloggers uniting on May 15th, at least one life will be made better. That life may be yours, because you participated in a day that positively influenced our world. And because you were touched, how will it affect the world around you....
  32. gosmelltheflowers
Of course it will make a difference...

    Ripples to waves.

    Butterfly effect.

    GO! Tony GO!
    1. TonyB
@ Gosmelltheflowers, rather Go! Bloggers Go!

@ humans, Rich Becker has posted a Countdown to Bloggers Unite at www.blogcatalog.com/group/bloggers-unite/discuss/entry/countdown-to-blogger... with ideas to make your voice heard.

Where is this source material that Amnesty International spoke about in the press release?

This is incredible. I can't wait.
    1. TonyB
lisa, great question. If you visit unite.blogcatalog.com/#amnesty there are some links to pages on the AI site with source material. I have a message with them to find out if there is more specific source material they can provide bloggers with for May 15th.
  36. gosmelltheflowers
Anything you / we can do in ring fenced Burma, Guys?
    1. TonyB
What can we do? How can we get more bloggers to act together? What actions can we take that will get notice? Can we set up a page similar to the email page that Amnesty International set up where all the details are in the online email and all we have to do is enter an email address?

      Any thoughts?

Post them here and in the groups area at

timethief, you did an amazing job on that post. This point is pertinent to using our blogs as vehicles of speech for positive influence

      "Access Denied
We usually take it for granted that we can have complete, unrestricted access to the Internet, wherever we are these days, but a recent study by an international group of researchers illustrates exactly how wrong this notion is.

The authors involved in the OpenNet Initiative say in their book, Access Denied: “Claiming control of the Internet has become an essential element in any government strategy to rein in dissent–the twenty-first century parallel to taking over television and radio stations.”"
  40. timethief
    @Tony
    [blush] It's all in here:
Access Denied: The Practice and Policy of Global Internet Filtering (Information Revolution and Global Politics) Edited by Ronald J. Deibert, John G. Palfrey, Rafal Rohozinski and Jonathan Zittrain
    www.amazon.com/Access-Denied-Filtering-Information-Revolution/dp/0262541963

Access Denied documents and analyzes Internet filtering practices in over three dozen countries, offering the first rigorously conducted study of this accelerating trend.

Internet filtering takes place in at least forty states worldwide including many countries in Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. Related Internet content control mechanisms are also in place in Canada, the United States and a cluster of countries in Europe.

Drawing on a just-completed survey of global Internet filtering undertaken by the OpenNet Initiative (a collaboration of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, and the University of Cambridge) and relying on work by regional experts and an extensive network of researchers, Access Denied examines the political, legal, social, and cultural contexts of Internet filtering in these states from a variety of perspectives.

Chapters discuss the mechanisms and politics of Internet filtering, the strengths and limitations of the technology that powers it, the relevance of international law, ethical considerations for corporations that supply states with the tools for blocking and filtering, and the implications of Internet filtering for activist communities that increasingly rely on Internet technologies for communicating their missions.

Reports on Internet content regulation in forty different countries follow, with each country profile outlining the types of content blocked by category and documenting key findings.

I posted an optimistic Aboriginal story to add to the effort of Bloggers United for Human Rights. It has a bit of magic, and a bit of emotion. 3 videos, 2 quotes --> git-forestry-blog.blogspot.com/2008/05/bloggers-unite-for-human-rights.html

All in all, all we need is hope
  47. kwekjustin
I support Human Rights, and I despise those who do not respect it... Human Rights are here for everyone around the world and everyone should have a fair share of it, irregardless of where you are from. Here, I would like to say for those "Great Mercenaries" who had abused Human Rights and in any form and they deserve our great sympathy as they themselves are living in their own world.

I just sent this information to my UNION: I.A.T.S.E. #12 Columbus, Ohio.
I believe that if each of us sent this message to those we work with/for
that the SPARK of 'CORPORATE' RESPONSIBILITY may grow over the bare patches
of this WORLD, not just America.
My CHALLENGE is that any Union MEMBER do the same for their 'BROTHERHOOD'.
    1. ravenscawl
I to extend this CHALLENGE to any MEMBER of a "BROTHERHOOD" of the ROAD. (2 wheels, or 4)

Jamyang Kyi is well-known as a performer of pop and traditional songs and for her blog. She is a respected intellectual and blogger who has written about women’s rights and the trafficking of girls. She has traveled extensively, including a 2006 trip to the United States to perform and lecture.

She was escorted from her office on April 1 by plainclothes police officers in the city of Xining, according to colleagues and friends. The authorities also confiscated her computer and a list of contacts. There has been no official confirmation of the detention.

This is just an avance of the my post for Blogger Unite.

Mexican governments, authorities and politicians in general have been telling for years that Mexico is a democratic, institutional, rule of law and sovereign country, but when it comes to human right issues it seems that Mexico is far beyond to become a true democratic state.
