I wonder if people can tell me what they think is the best antivirus software? I have been using F-Prot for the last 3 years or so--but there is a problem with that and system restore so I want to stop using it. I used Norton years ago but hated how bloated it was--and have heard MacAfee is the same.
Any suggestions? TIA.

I use Zone Alarm Security Suite only because it's free and provided by my ISP for having DSL with them .. It's not bad, if you take the time to seriously teach it what's okay and what's not okay. I do get frustrated at times because every 20 days or so, after no incidents, it moves my firewall settings into High Zone which creates problems sometimes with some programs so, I quickly change it back to Medium Internet Zone.
Bottom Line - it's not as much as the anti-virus software that you use, but how often you run your program and keep it up to date with current database and anti-virus definitions. -
AVG (free version) from Grisoft is very good. I supplement it with SpotBot Search & Destroy, and run occasional full system scans with Malwarebytes.org to catch the stuff that even Norton & McAfee have been known to miss.

Avira Antivirus, Spybot S&D and Comodo Firewall.
These are the three things i have in my laptop.
And a ninja pendisk. -
Avast for anti-virus, Spybot Search and Destroy for malaware and CCleaner to clean ur pc's of old cache, temporary internet files, and even left over files in your registry from uninstalled programs or softwares. All these are available Free from Cnet.downloads

I have had a really good experience with McAfee. I have it set to update frequently. I like it because it gives you the option to do a quick scan or full scan and has settings to help you maintain your computer too. One thing you may or may not like is that it pops up a dialog box every time a program tries to send information over your internet connection. You can set certain programs to have blanket permission or not, as you choose. Depending on what software you use, it can be either helpful or annoying. (It's helpful to me.)
Hope you are having a good holiday. Safe travels.
and early happy new year. -MM -

Stay away from Norton, McAfee, and Symantec they will bog down your system to a snails speed(they consume way too many system resources).
I am currently using Eset's NOD32 Internet Security and love it. It keeps my system protected, without interfering with anything I do and runs silently in the background.
Prior to Eset, I was using a combination of Avast! and Adaware. In that time I never ran into any problems that they could not handle, but I grew tired of having to use two different programs to protect my system. However, the upside was that they were free. -
Drive Sentry! Greatest anti virus I have ever had and its free too! Try it out, www.drivesentry.com

I don't use spybot because in order to do what it does well ... never mind. I recommend this excellent online service . It's Free. It's a far deeper and far more comprehensive program than spybot.

I can recommend Panda GP 2009 Anti-Virus free. I has capability to block, heal, delete all spyware, trojan, spam and etc. the only things you've been anoyed poping most of the time to warn you to purchase to update more database... its not trouble with me.. if the database cant update for a month i reinstall it again and again.. I've been an AVG before for a long time but Panda is the best...

I heard that Norton has the most frequent updates but not the best detection rate. The best dectection rate goes to Avast!, though it doesn't update frequently.
I've been using Avast! for five years, and i have to say. It's the best so far. Great Antivirus software by the Czechs! :-) Try it Melanie. -
here are five most downloaded free antivirus software (rated by CNET)

mtyler77 - I am presuming that you have a version of Windows, if that is the case you have to say which. It is important.
We'll assume that you don't have Win95 nor 98 SE. If you have XP then AVG free (Download the full version free trial 30 days and suite) it automatically lets you know that you are about to be reverted to the base addition at 5 days. and be annoying until it goes to free edition - then it is perfect for a home edition (single user). I have tried most of what has been said here and nothing works better - none!
Ccleaner be careful - it is a tool that does exactly what it says on the tin - I have known people who have used it and had to re-install the OpSys because they made a mistake.
SpyBot still works cleanly with XP - not so much Vista though they are working on it.
With Vista - if you have it - AVG still works very well and does noting with chunking out the memory - which is a bonus for Vista, a real bonus.
Vista firewall is the best that Microsoft has come up with, so is Defender - if you don't have it enabled do so - it works cleanly.
DO NOT have two or more anti-virus running at the same time - ever!
Last, but not least - don't use outlook express, or internet explorer, even the new IE8 - they are garbage!
If you use popmail use Thunderbird and for browsing use Firefox. They, in themselves will catch a shedload of what you don't want even before you get infected, unless stupidity is the norm.
