Heya, guys-
I was pulling together a little playlist of groups that do more humor-oriented songs, and I was wondering if you all had any recommendations.

I've already got things like Moxy Fruvous' King of Spain, and a few things from the Austin Lounge Lizards, and some They Might Be Giants, but would like some general recommendations if you're up for it.

Many thanks!

Here's one from the legendary British band Half man half biscuit:

They sound as though they speak with experience about the subject matter.

Perhaps we could get them to do a number about forum trolls next. It seems like it would fit their idiom.

Anything from Jack Black, Tenacious D (: Tribute I think is the best one!
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh-- good to remind me! Excellent choice-- Thanks!

From comedian or musician or ??
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I'm not really picky- I'm just looking for songs and not skits.
    2. crpitt
So it has to be a proper song right?

      Swearing allowed?

The wonderful Sweaty Betty by The Beatles (or the Macc Lads)

    4. ThriftShopRomantic
Heh- And to think I thought I knew most of the Beatles hits...
    5. crpitt
I knew all the words to Sweaty Betty when I was little, my dad should of listened to more appropriate music
    6. ThriftShopRomantic
Heh- I can only imagine the looks on the adults' faces when you started to sing... sing... SING!!!
    7. crpitt
lmao, luckily I was never an out loud singer
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Benny Hill isn't a fave of mine in particular. He does a great job with accents, but of the British comedians he's a little too broad for me.

      But thanks for the idea!
    2. aningeniousname
He was a comedian as well? I only know him through his music.
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Well, I can understand as I doubt aardvarks have proper TV reception in their caves... er, burrows... er, penthouses.

      That isn't weird al
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
I'd missed that one of Al's. I'll never hear that song the same way again.

(Honestly there are a lot of songs I can't un-hear the Weird Al versions, when I hear the originals)
  5. gtcathey
    Anything by Stephen Lynch.
Here is down to the ol pub instead
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngODdWLPPlk
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Heh- I wonder where the videographer on the Youtube video decided, "You know what this Stephen Lynch song needs? It really needs an accompaniment by Transformers cartoons?"
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Well, there's a rendition of that song I hadn't heard before. He's quite the genie, isn't he?
    2. pointlessbanter
That is their entire gimmick, they cover all women's songs.

It is the hottest ticket in Hollywood for some reason.
  6. AmyOops
my fave is dennis leary.. asshole
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
That one is pretty funny-- I'd enjoyed Denis' standup, too. I'm trying to keep the list clean-ish though.

    Arrogant Worms
    > I post the Happy Birthday song everytime I can, so it's probably in the searches .. but, this song is pretty good too youtube.com/watch?v=8Im1bCKoQs8

    youtube.com/watch?v=VQOMxz-O7Sc&feature=related
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Woo-hoo!-- not only didn't I know about the Arrogant Worms, but I wasn't thinking of the Pythons. Lumberjack is great, and there are a few others I'll include as well. Cool.
    2. PetLvr
The worms are great Carrot Juice is Murder www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmK0bZl4ILM is pretty good too .. Gozilla www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSLItA3NTKs&feature=related .. too many to link here - it would probably get reported as spam if I listed them all
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
I got a kick out of the sensitive love ballad "Stalker Girl" as well.
  8. CrotchetyOldMan
I thought "Turkey in the Straw" was the Good Humor song.

But no song cracks me up more than "I'm a Lumberjack."

    1. ThriftShopRomantic
      "Swinging from Tree to Tree..."
    2. legbamel
And Eric the Half-a-Bee. Python has loads of great songs, including teh philosopher one (G'day, Bruce!) I'm snickering just thinking about it. I also like the Bananaphone song. MC Frontalot does a wacky song called "Bizarro Genius Baby" that might work for you, too.
  9. CrotchetyOldMan
One of the classics "The Streak"

    youtube.com/watch?v=85krLPrWWTY

And no compilation would be complete without

    "My Own Grandpa"
    youtube.com/watch?v=wUuTIyz9XYI

I tried to get the version from Uncle Floyd, which I like better, but sadly, it's not on youtube

And finally, even stoners get their own humor song

    youtube.com/watch?v=fKym33vK1cs&feature=related
    By Jim Stafford
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh, I forgot about Jim Stafford. I used to really like him when he was on The Smothers Brothers show when I was a kid.
    2. barryfromtexas
      ahhhh the Smethren Bretheren
  10. CrotchetyOldMan
Stafford did some funny ones, My Girl, Bill was a great song. Little weird, but good.

    Can't find it on youtube.

And you are always welcome to use Concrete and Clay.

    youtube.com/watch?v=dN-vcyNWDjM

That's the promo. I could find the long version if you could stand it.
    1. LGramlich
The title reminds me of Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue."
  11. barryfromtexas
I love David Alan Coe's :You Never Even Call Me by my Name" and yes, it qualifies as a humor song
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I will have to check that out.
    2. barryfromtexas
      the verse...
I was drunk the day my momma got outta prison,
and I went to pick her up in the rain.
But, before I could get to the station in my pick-up...truck,
she got runned over by the damned old train!
  12. LGramlich
Some from the Barenaked Ladies; Enid, Grade 9, The King of Bedside Manor, Be My Yoko Ono, If I Had a Million Dollars
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Ah! I do have a few of those on my playlist-- cool, thank you!
    2. CrotchetyOldMan
Anything by Yoko Ono is hysterical. I doubt that was her intent, but, just sayin'
  13. ThriftShopRomantic
I'm headed offline, but will check in later-- just so folks know I'm not ignoring them.

This has been really fun, I didn't expect to see so many groups that were totally new to me.
  14. LGramlich
Some from Run-DMC (yeah, I know...I'm kickin' in old school); You Be Illin', You Talk Too Much, It's Tricky, Dumb Girl
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I kick in old school all the time. In fact, I kick so old school, I sound like a total dork even trying to say that phrase. Thanks!

    Two sources of funny music:

    Frank Zappa
    Spinaltap
    1. tiggyblog
Agreed! Zappa could be funny just playing guitar.

Anything by the Rutles, the Eric Idle-spoof Beatles band. Their songs were actually pretty good!
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh, Spinal Tap is great-- why didn't I even think of these things?!

And Tiggy, you're right-- I saw the Rutles not long ago-- I'll have to see what I can dig up.
  17. PetLvr
D'oh! This one just came on my music playlist .. didn't think of him.

I gotta go with Mel Brooks here...

"The Inquisition" from History of the World Part I is a favorite:
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKxnaMeOK20

Then, of course, there's the original Brooks classic, "Springtime For Hitler":

      Ah, good ol' Mel!

Once The Inquisition is in my head, I end up humming it the whole day.
  21. voodooKobra
Avenue Q, Stephen Lynch, Weird Al, and I think that's all I can name off the top of my head.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
      Thanks, Kobra!

He does have some good ones. I have to remember toward Thanksgiving and Hannuka to add those themic ones into the mix, too.

Weird Al Yankovic - You don't love me anymore

Oh, you think I'm ugly and you say I'm cheap
You shaved off my eyebrows while I was asleep
You drilled a hole in my head
Then you dumped me in a drainage ditch and left me for dead

Oh, you know this really isn't like you at all
You never acted this way before
Honey, something tells me you don't love me anymore, oh no no
Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore

I'm sort of looking for clean-ish stuff that, if some of the folks from my thrift decorating blog ventured over to my humor blog, it wouldn't freak them out too much.

I've got some really nice older lady readers there, and I kinda don't want to scare them too badly, should they click over to the newer blog.
  25. flamingpoodle
Wasted Rock Ranger by Great White.
Anything by GWAR or Spinal Tap.
Anything by Monty Python (Always look on the bright side of life).
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I did find a few good Monty Python ones, and added a couple of Spinal Tap good'ns just now. Coolness- thanks!
  26. Ravyn
We managed to get this far in the thread without anyone mentioning Tom Lehrer? I'm shocked.

I also highly recommend Flanders and Swann if you can find them. Particularly the ones about animals; they're both hilarious and family-appropriate.
  27. inmyredhead
A few song titles from my own personal list of fave 'funny songs'are... All time favorite.. Paradise by the dashboard light' by Meatloaf- Is it humorous? I happen to think so! Cracks my A** up every time. Secondly I really like 'Oh lord it's hard to be humble, when you're perfect in every way. I can't wait to look in the mirror... I get better looking each day! To know me is to love me, I must be one hell of a man, oh Lord it's hard to be humble... but i'm doing the best that I can!'
And then there's 'My Ding-a-ling' (Chuck Berry?) Doesn't have one dirty word in it and you make of it what your own mind is wired for, lol. The best version has the live laugh track in it and it's a fun little frolic of a song.
    C'mon people... it's a just a musical toy he's talking about! :-}

Then there's always Roger Miller who has a few. (ie. Guitarzan)
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Heh- I do think Meatloaf is humorous-- whether he intended it that way or not, well... And the drama and hairblowing in that video!

I've added the Ray Stevens version of Guitarzan. I've also gotten a Heywood Banks tune or two. He's a little obscure, but funny.
    2. legbamel
Dang, you beat me to My Ding-a-Ling. I love that song.
  28. PetLvr
    Is your playlist done yet?
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
For now, based on what I can find in legal MP3s online.

If you were interested in the direct link, I can send it to you. Or you can access it in the sidebar of my humor blog, if you want to take it for a test-drive.

You contributed a lot to it-- I appreciate it.
    2. PetLvr
Sure Can you PM me the link? probably the easiest .. and, thanks in advance! I have to turn off my TV today and finish off some work - and need some good laffs

or via twitter is good too
      D PetLvr
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Will do. I'm headed into work now so I'll Twitter it to you when I get settled.
  29. clioandme
Wouldn't the Good Humor song just be the sound of the ice cream truck?
