My mom would tell me to avoid cutting my fingernails in the evening as it would put the life of any relative or family members at risk.

I have the pretty standard habit of "knocking on wood" if I discuss the possibility of something happening that I don't want to happen. I think in England they say "touch wood" instead of "knock on wood." Does anyone use a similar metaphor in a different language?

It is 'touch wood' in england

I always get dressed the same way before a football (soccer) match and have to reverse it in exactly the same way at half time and get dressed again.

If there are any Red Sox fans out there, you will hear a bundle. (Red Sox = baseball team in Boston) Oh, and what about Chicago. Yep, I think sports fans might have the rest of us beat. I hope they speak up here. Much fun.

I play baseball and there is a big superstition about stepping on the baseline before a game. The baseline being the chalk placed. If you do step on the line then you will lose the game. No one teaches this to anyone else on the team because everyone knows it to be common knowledge.

Lipstick was created by ancient Egyptians in an attempt to keep evil spirits from entering their bodies by drawing a circle around their mouths. How's that for weird?

I say touch wood too, and throw salt over my shoulder if I spill it, I don't even know why. A really stupid thing I can't help myself doing is when I see one magpie, I cross my fingers, touch something and say tax for life, it started in school and I just can't stop

i do the salt thing, too. i hold my breath, still as an adult, when i drive by a cemetery. when i was young, that was what we used to do because it was bad luck to breathe when other people can't...or something silly like that.

    Hi all,
I was in a cafe with my brother eating breakfast and one time I knocked the salt pot over and spilled it, he said you have to throw some over your left shoulder now, after he explained I said ok ok and threw some over my left shoulder and the bloke behind me ran to the bathroom crying like a baby because his eyes were stinging. This leads me to believe that I just past on the bad luck to the bloke sitting over my left shoulder so in a way I guess it does work.

    Hi all,
My mum used to tell me to make sure I wore clean underwear before going to school (many yrs ago) in case I got into an accident.Anyone know the superstition/reason behind this???
My view is if you get hit by a car your going to crap yourself anyway so what's the point in clean underwear?

my mom used to make us wear clean underwear, too. her reasoning was, if we were to get into an accident, at least we'd have on clean underwear. but, you're right...we'd crap ourselves silly so...who cares!?
  16. Tonylewis
    Hi all,
I'd just like to point out here that my underwear is clean anyway, I just don't put on clean underwear in case of an accident, lol

Anyone know the origin of the black cat crossing in front of you???
I remember a bloke I used to work with, I don't drive so he used to give me a lift, once a black cat crossed the road in front of his car,it must have been at least a couple of hundred yards away but he stopped and counted to 10,to this day I don't know the reason behind it,when I asked him why he did that he just said "it's bad luck if you don't".

There's also not stepping on a crack (sidewalk) because it will break your mother's back.

Breaking a mirror is seven years bad luck.

If I broke a mirror I'd probably feel sick for a few hours thinking about that one

Superstitions = I think the best I have heard related to the former Australian cricket captain who always had his red handkerchief with him. By the time he retired it was nothing but thin shredded rag.

Karma, it always comes back to bite you in the butt.
Sometimes just having bad thoughts about someone and it's happen to you.

When I play rugby or soccer I am always the last person to leave the dressing room before a game & I always put my shirt on last when getting dressed.
    Don't know why........

My family say I have OCD!
