The edge - how close have you been?

Mad, genius or just plain insane?

Do tell - inspire others or at least frighten them!

There are days where students in a classroom are not "normal" beings. You did not have a good sleep the previous night after all the marking and frustration, and here the students are testing your patience."What should I do, yell at them or keep cool?". This is the question my brain is telling the owner. However, sense does come in to control, after years of practice. "Keep cool" is the winner. I never regretted this sense of personal control (in the classroom) as I protrayed myself to be in control of the class and the students. Cheers to me! Hurray!

The closest I have been to the edge was during final exams at UCSB undergrad. I was an English major taking 4 classes (16 units) on a quarter system. Each class assigned 7 novels to read bringing the total for the 8 week quarter to approximately 28 (four classes times seven approx. 300 page books to read in one 8 week quarter). In the last week of finals (seven days), I managed to read 9 books, write 4 term papers, and take 3 final exams. I was sleep deprived for three days straight, the longest I have ever stayed awake, and I crashed hard after my last exam and turning in my final paper(s). I could not think or see straight and I felt like I was on the brink of insanity.

The edge of what, Flowers? Me? I'm too plodding, dumb, mono-maniacal-diverted from reality going on all around me. Like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, I would just like to acquire enough brain level to even be considered to be possibly harmful to myself. That would be complimentary.

The edge of insanity. I've been poor for a while if that is what you mean. I shared a 7 bedroom house while I was in Santa Cruz, California and lived on about $500 a month after paying for college, $200 of it went for my room. Every cent I had went to staying in colloege, I was lucky to get scholarships. I basically lived in a room a little bit bigger than a closet. My roommates were freaky, they kicked me out eventually, but that is another story. I am
an intellectual. I'm not much good for anything else. But at least I know
    it.

Thanks for sharing - I studied my masters in a year out down in San Luis Obispo -what a blast - now those times at Cal Poly were close to the edge!
