Anyone *NOT* blog for money?

I have nothing against blogging to make money, but I
am curious how many people blog without the sole or part purpose of making money through adsense, advertising or any other means.
If you blog purely for the sake of blogging or having your voice heard regarding your favourite subject, please post your blog and description here.

None of my blogs have ads, and I plan to keep it that way for a good long time. (Unless I get millions of readers and just can't help myself.)
A tumblelog with a history theme and occasional digressions:
stoneman.tumblr.com
Three history blogs, the first being more for me and the other two for teaching:
mrstoneman.blogspot.com
historysurvey.blogspot.com
historysurveylinks.blogspot.com
And a blog about the Mac for non-experts:
onmymac.blogspot.com
Now aren't you sorry you asked.
Actually, I've run into others with no ads, but they do seem to be in a minority. -
=) I blog just...because - I don't make any money from it.
www.dykalicious.blogspot.com - it's a humour blog (well, I intend it to be funny). Just my life in the country =). -
i don't blog for money. i did not even know people made money out of blogging before i came here! hihi

I don't blog for money. I have adsense, but haven't made anything and don't really care about that.
I write about crime, the justice system, safety, etc.

Great! I will be checking those blogs out, thanks for posting:)
I don't have any ads on my blog either - my blog is for writing about my art, work in progress posts and info about my subjects etc...although I hope it might lead to commissions and art print sales but I don't actually do adsense or that type of advertising. -
I don't blog to make money, I just enjoy writing and sharing the projects I feature. I think my audience and I would lose some rapport if I started running ads.

I don't blog for money, just to air out stuff - victoryachasegoestotherapy.blogspot.com
All the advertising on other places can really turn me off, I never realized how much schilling was out there. -
I blog for me and hope others visit my blogs. I'm not listing them in this post because it's easy enough for anyone interested to click my name and find them anyway.
However, I do also make some money from my blogs and don't see any problem with that. If I write about a product or site or service, it's my choice to do so and I don't consider that "schilling", whether it's paid or not. And believe me, I point to plenty of sites that I'm not paid for!
See, if my content is shoddy, it doesn't matter if I blog for money or not, does it? And conversely, if I have good content, then who cares if some of it is paid? I visit blogs with paid content and comment on posts of interest to me. I don't care if it's a paid post or not.
I just have to wonder why it seems to matter so much to some people? Maybe I just see things from a different angle due to my age, but folks ought to let other folks do what's right for them. Last time I looked, free enterprise was still a viable option in the country where I live. Earning money really isn't an evil thing.-
I don't think anyone was saying it was an evil thing or casting judgement on bloggers who do have ads, etc. I think the discussion began as a question of who blogs not designed solely TO generate money-- as there are quite a few of those out there-- and also to generally discuss why people choose not to ad advertisements.
Speaking only for myself, having a web site about budget decorating and then asking my audience (who presumably also believes in budget decorating and thrift) for advertising money would be a bit counterproductive to the theme. :-) -
I don't think that anyone objects to people blogging for money, but in a discussion group like this it's relevant because motivation is going to have a big impact on what's important to you in blogging. For instance, for many bloggers who are "in it for the money", sheer numbers are important, both because more visitors mean the possibility of more clicks and because some revenue sources are only interested in working with bloggers who can demonstrate certain levels of traffic, ranking, whatever. On the other hand, a lot of people who aren't monetizing their blogs, or who have tossed up some AdSense but don't really care about the revenue, are more interested in maintaining a core group of readers who actively comment, even if that's just 50 people. In a very real sense, blogging for money and blogging for whatever personal reasons one might have are entirely different endeavors with different techniques and different measures of success.

Mines more of a passion than for profit, I host my own forums so i don't have to have the ad's and the blogs have no ad's either, I suppose my building blog indirectly makes money because it's on my work website and a few customers have come to me via the blog.

I just blog for the fun of it, and have put a good bit of music I've been involved with on my site just for the heck of it: gashcrumb.homelinux.org/logahead
I don't think I'd want my site cluttered with ads, plus I'm doing it on the cheap by hosting the site myself so all I pay for is power to run the machine. -
I dont blog for money..I genuinely am interested in music videos..Ive got ads, but I'd make more money scratching for loose change down the back of my couch.

I blog to document my life really, yes it helps if we can laugh about everyday things! My latest post would you believe is about me stripping the paint off a doorframe! Oh and I videod the scene out the window, whilst singing a musichall song! No, not paid....who would pay for that? LOL! Anyhow pop by anytime. I have a great community, some fantastic people there.

I have a few blogs, but the one I spend the most time on has no paid advertisements and is just a place to try and be funny and observe the world and things that happen in it. I blog about writing. Even if I wanted to make a pile of money doing that, I can't. It doesn't lend itself to monetization, nor does trying to force a pile of ads into it support the credibility of my posts. Sure, a penny here and there is nice, but at this rate I'll be 100 before I can cash out with Google! ;~) I make money on-line from other sources. The blog is an indulgence, my own (too-)private soap box.
-
I blog just for blogging sake. No money involved. My blog tries to find the humor in every day life in general.

My blog is an experiment. Yes it contains stories about engagements and other things but I am honestly a bad writer.
My wife, on the other hand, has a blog that I created for to allow her to express her passion for cooking at www.ConfessionsOFaFoodie.com She can write like a journalist and you can tell.
My website is honestly part SEO experiment, residual income, affiliate, vendor reseller, and all other evils of capitalism. -
i blog because i enjoy it. i enjoy the outlet; i enjoy the conversations.
on the other hand, i named my blog Red Monkey because there's this whole long story about me and ADHD and a toy monkey that happened to be red. after i'd been blogging for a while, i come to find out there's these AWESOME ... COOL ... GOTTA HAVE ... jeans called Red Monkey Jeans. Guess what most of my search engine traffic is for?
so, i added adsense in the hopes that those folks eating up all my freaking bandwidth would find ads for those stupid jeans and thus they could "pay me back" for all the bandwidth they eat!
Took me 9 0r 10 months, I can't remember, but I did get payout from adsense. dunno if that'll happen this year from the trends. (though i noticed writing about stephen king and buffy the vampire slayer got me loads of clicks ... lol) -

Just about Z www.zm0ney.com No form of advertisements or money making scenes. Just chilling and sharing my interest.
Here in Barbados there's not much that do what I do... -
Well, though I do have adsense ads on my blog I know full well that there is no money to be made on the site's focus however I had an idea and went with it regardless.
I want to help people yet I do not have the knowledge and resources to be able to do just that. So, with what the site allows I can provide my own experience and advice unique to me, and also refer any professional advice to my readers.
I just want my readers to also participate if they had anything to share or just to write about anything related to the topics that they wish to get off there chest. A place where they can express themselves through writing out of their own comfort zone. Can I promote? Thanks =]

As much as I LOVE money, I don't make a single cent from blogging. My blog is about perfecting the art of imperfection; embracing limitations and celebrating victories no matter how little. I just want to send stuff out into the void...hoping to connect with people who think they rock despite their bounteous flaws.

I do not need to blog for money, as I am already ridiculously wealthy, being an aristocratic lord and all.
lordlikely.blogspot.com is where I write about my astonishing adventures - but be warned, it is not for the faint of heart! -
I don't make a penny, wouldn't dream of putting any adverts up. I think you've got to have a VERY successful blog to make enough money to make having adverts worth while. A few dollars here or there is fine but I think there's a tradeoff between a few bucks and lost visitors, subscribers and popularity etc.
-
And now, a word from the mundane side.
"A Walk on the Catholic Side," a section of my oldest website, has no advertising, apart from some relevant link sharing, and it will not. I've no intention of adding simony to my problems.
As for the rest, I run advertising, and am starting to make a little money.
I'm also very interested in what I post/publish, or I'd be doing something else. This is just a guess, but I think there's more ROI in skinning minks than blogging.
On the whole, I'd rather be blogging. -
I have no ads on my blogs.
The only way my blogs are (sorta) monetized is that some of them are syndicated by Newstex and Blogburst, two agencies that peddle blog content to outside publishers. In theory, that can earn me a little money, but in practice, the amount is really miniscule. I continue to participate with those syndicators not for the pennies it pays, but because it has resulted in some of my blog content getting re-published on high-profile websites, which in turn brings traffic and lends authority. But the "income," in monetary terms, is almost nil.
In short, I'm definitely NOT in it for the money! -
I just thought of something:
For those of you who do NOT blog for money, what would change your mind? What, if anything, would motivate you to monetize your blog in some manner?
Just curious...-
I'm not sure I could be tempted to blog for money. I blog about a passionate past time of mine and I do it because it is incredibly fun. I would like to think both of those things are apparent through my blog and make it a fun place to be for people that are interested in the same thing I am. I don't want the added burdens and worries that come along with the rest of the stuff because then it isn't as fun. Does that make sense? I don't want to worry about who is clicking ads and who isn't. I don't want to worry about my page hits or lack thereof. I don't want to stress myself out to the point that I trade stumbles, diggs, votes, or anything else. Then it loses the appeal that is has for me and that isn't worth it. It is easier to simply blog because it is fun and to keep it uncomplicated. : )

Yes, I do.

It's poems my dad wrote over 30 years about God before he died. My blog is the only blog that's made of my thoughts and poems and someone else who is not alive written before blogging. It's part of his journal. I write personal stories about how the Holy Spirit reveals nothing major just changes and simple revelations in my life. Mostly it's searching for lost souls that need God's love and finding my self through helping them. This is what my dad did everyday. Never taking money for preaching. doing God's work for free. Working for a living on the railroad. Loosing sleep to go pray with someone in the middle of the night. Refusing to take money cause he felt if you mix money and religion it becomes corrupt. How true and sad that is of most things. Write less after I had children but now my writing is deeper. They reveal God to me in ways noone can. They see the world through eyes of trust and love. Please, visit. There is no adsense on mine. I don't believe in cheapening it for a little bit of money. Only want to share it with others. -
I blog purely for the passion and enjoyment of it. My blog is about latest and unfound web applications and websites that I would like everybody to know. My blog is free of any ads and is out of pure interest and not motivated by money whatsoever. You can visit my blog at www.worknplay.net

This has turned into a great thread, I'm glad I started it:)
homeschoolzoo just for the record, I didn't say or in any way imply that earning money was an evil thing and don't actually care what other people do with their blogs.
What prompted my original question was that I have spent many many hours recently trying to find decent and interesting blogs about things I am interested in...and many of those hours were wasted looking at blogs that were bloated with advertising and paid link "advert product promotion type posts" with very little relevent information/dialogue. Many others that did have content was reproduced stuff from e-zines rather than original content.
It made me wonder what percent of the blogging population still blogged for 'blogging sake' rather than purely for monetory gain. It also made me wonder how to weed out the blogs that are purely there to make money, and the ones that have actual interesting content, with a consistency of genre/topic/style (even if they have the odd ad-sense button here and there).
Personally I would like to see a directory of blogs that are not written with the intent of making money. I figure if they are not written with financial gain they have to be written for the content:)
Before anyone snipes at me for that comment, for what its worth, my own blog would probably be excluded from such a directory, because indirectly I hope that some of my readers would purchase my artwork. -
I guess if I had some traffic and could monetize things a bit, I might - but it would be unobtrusive. As of now, I don't run any ads but I also don't mind some subtle affiliate links or similar on blogs that I visit. If people enjoy the content and the site then letting people buy something or do something to support them is ok.
Outright pay per posts are a huge turn-off to me. To me it makes all the content feel sort of phony or disingenuous - just the opposite of what I think a good blog should be.
My blog is mostly general observational interest stuff, music, light tech etc.. and can be found at mythermos.com
The blog to read is upsidedowncats.com - my wife does a great job on it. Much better than the drivel I write.

I love writing and do it because I enjoy it. But the best thing about blogging is getting readers that post comments. The discussions that have taken my place on my blog and other people's is just incredible.
I have actually accumulated some great blogging friends and couldn't have done it alone.
My blog is called "Silent Cacophony" and you can read it at chasemarch.blogspot.com -
I don't blog for money. I have a unique reason to keep blogging.
I blog to keep my son and myself alive. More than 3 years ago, I receive a threatening death note in my mailbox. Some people want to hurt my son, because they want me to keep my mouth shut.
I had written many letters to expose the bad civil servants of my country. I wrote to the Ministries concerned, met my member of Parliament, I went to the police....etc, but my cases were thrown out and covered up. I contacted the local media but they were too scared to publish my stories. Even my letters to the PM were withheld at certain levels.
I'm glad blogs came along. I work hard to get traffic to my blog and am ranking in the Top 5K in Technoratic. My blog was noticed recently and I have written some posts on my ordeal. I am planning to put my stories into a book and it will be released should anything happened to me or my son. I'm not about to let those people get away with murder. I shall do everything to keep myself alive to see justice be done, one day. -
I'm not in it for the money. If I were, I'd write about something more popular, like celebrities. Instead "Beers For Barcelona" is about street ephemera from around NYC - flyers, stickers, art, poetry and whatever else my neighbors tape to a lamp post. Much of what I write about is advertising but I have none on my site.
-
Nope, I don't blog for money. In my opinion, "blog for money" belongs to the same category as "get rich quick" and that doesn't really work all that well, does it? I mean, sure, you can make money from your blog if you have lots of readers, but that's not the purpose of your blog.
Anyway, I blog because I have thoughts, ideas, opinions and discoveries I want to share with people. So if you're interested in software development and related topics, with a rant here and there when I can't help it, go ahead and visit Beard's Eye:
beardseye.blogspot.com/ -
I don't. Although I'm keenly aware that people will do anything for money.
That really wasn't a slam to those who do post ads. Honest.
A little while back, I felt a NEED to look at my life and understand segments of my past better. Sitting and thinking about it just wasn't doing working for me. My mind wanders off topic too easily.
However, when the topic involves writing thoughts down, I find that I can focus and stay on subject better.
So, that's why I'm out here. Don't want ads. Don't want awards. Just want to put my thoughts on the screen where I can see them (sounds weird, I know) no matter where I'm traveling. In doing so, it's like I'm another person looking at someone else's thoughts and seeing them in a whole new light. I have the opportunity to see things in a way that the "other person" didn't.
Know what? It works! -
i blog because it is my freedom... i have poured my heart out on the pages of my blogs... all of them... nothing else has ever given me this feeling...
i even started a new blog,, for people that want to pour their heart out... tell all their secrets...but don't want to do it on their own blog...you dont even have to have a blog to have a secret...
it is called "secret... secret... i've got a secret...." and you can find it here...

you can leave a secret.. or just share the secrets as they are published...

There aren't any ads or donate buttons on my blog. I don't blog for money and I don't see myself doing that in the future.
I blog to vent and to get things out, to help others with bipolar disorder, to educate people about bipolar disorder, and to reduce the stigma surround mental illness and self-injury. Blogging is very therapeutic for me.
bipolarchick.net/blogs -
I see it two ways - and I was conflicted about it for a while. I don't believe in bloggers who blog solely for money and do it by promoting things they themselves don't believe in, products they don't use, have never used, etc. There's been instances of this that I have witnessed, where prominent bloggers were just going overboard in promoting things and it was revealed that they were not even believers of the product.
I have a professional career and I blog as a totally unrelated hobby, but my topic is something I am really passionate about, and if I can make money by doing that, the money would allow me to devote more time to putting together resources for my blog. It's all I do at work now, every free moment, I'm writing articles for my blog to post when I get home, or collecting links for something. If I was able to do that all day, I believe my blog could become a huge and valuable resource, kinda like Entrepreneur (the magazine) for the average bloke! Yes, that is my dream, lol.
So I have ads, but each of the ads are for things that broke entrepreneurs can use, they're not just affiliate links that I've grabbed and slapped on there. I looked through a LOT of links for programs and some of them were just laughable, they promise a million dollar profit in 24 hours and crap like that. I refuse to promote things that I wouldnt buy myself, so I guess I'm a blogger with integrity - who wouldn't mind earning a few bucks.
At the same time (yes, I'm still typing!), I realize that it takes months and sometimes years to build up a following of people that trust you enough to buy something because you recommended it, so I plan on being here for the long haul. In the meantime, I have a career that pays my bills so I don't bother obsessing over Adsense and things like that because I'm not expecting anything.
Does all of that make sense?
-
I blog for two reasons: one- to share with others what I have learned and two- to challenge myself to stretch outside of my comfort zone, since writing is uncomfortable for me. I personally find myself annoyed when I check out a blog that I think may have great information only to find that the first half of the page is adsense and advertisers... I enjoy personal and professional growth and appreciate when I find blogs that complement that. That is what I try to model. I do not have anything against those who use a lot of ads in their blogs, but am not attracted to it personally.

I just love to write about anything. Mostly life and love, but some silly things come out from time to time.

I blog because it's fun and I've been keeping online journals and sites since about 1997. I only recently took my online stuff in the direction of blogging and this year I found out about the possibility of making money, so I created my first serious blog. My blog is about venting on celebrity and politics and current news, so it's cathartic. Also, I have blogging partners (a few friends) who post on my blog and it's fun to talk about our differing opinions.
I don't mind ads on blogs at all, and if I find a well written blog I'll link to it and also from time to time make sure to click on an ad or two just to help them out.

You won't find ads on my blog. You will find a rationale on the first post. A few other posts present the case against the rush for ads--which a few bloggers attacked.

Trust me, my blog makes no money whatsoever, I just love informing people about Dorky stuff that I think they'll find interesting (www.thefattytalks.com) and my environmental blog (www.thefattycares.com)to raise awareness. I have ads up, but that's for the just in case I can get a few extra dollars one day...
-
I enjoy wordpress - they don't admit google ads!
Blogging for money is a kind of spam, because most of the money bloggers don't identify themselves like a company and doing something for money is a commercial activity! Its the same like you see a film interrupted by commercials!
What you like to realize with your blog? Communication? Commercial activity? Information? Education? Joy and fun?
It would be very smart to identify every blog with advertisement on the first page, for you can decide if you like to enter or not. -
I have some adsense ads at the bottom and lower right of my page -- because they came with the template I got and I haven't thought to remove them. Blogging to me seemed like a great way to chronicle a major life transition that is unfolding for us in the next few years. We're going from urban professionals to farmers and vintners! Sure you can write a journal, but blogging requires more discipline (you don't always worry about grammer and sense in a journal entry). And it keeps friends and family up to speed on our doings. But if you think you are going to be the next Dooce, you're wasting your time with a blog. The only people who seem to be making money are the ones who prey on innocent bloggers with promises of making their blogs pay (once you fork over a "modest" fee.

I blog to help others if I can, I see alot of blogs loaded with adsense.
this means one thing, the blogger is new and the content may not be anything worth reading ,
But I need to add there are very cool and informative blogs that have adsense and deserve the credit, these blogs are very clear and the navigation is simple.
Here is my myth (maybe we should get myth busters on this):)
people don't click adds because their site does not receive clicks either!
But what if your site does receive clicks? do you use the adsense to search related content too? -
I couldn't care less about making money with my blog. Oh, if I sold a few books as a result, I wouldn't mind. But, my books have already sold over the 1 million mark over my long writing career, so, I'd ride that out--all he way to the Pearly Gates--and my next of kin would still be able to say, the Old Man accomplished something in life.
