Just curious? There has been alot of talk about web hosting, and some people have decided to do it themselves. Are you one of those people? If so why? And if you pay for web hosting, who did you choose?

Are you talking about actually hosting a website on your own computer (in your own home) or just hosting with a regular host like godaddy?

I currently use site5.com for my hosting and I am fairly happy with it.

As carlgalloway mentioned, I'm confused by your question. I pay for hosting through Bluehost.com. I don't host it on my own personal computer, though I know that's possible.

I would think about doing that though i would be looking for a faster internet connection a computer that i would not use apart from to host and all other stuff like UPS.

hmm sounds like a lot of work am starting to think lol

I had planned to use one of my computers as a web host. The only problem is that here in Rio is damn hot and the amount of money I would spend with electricity per month (full time air conditioner) is bigger than any web hosting company annual fee.

Starting a blog and hosting it on your home computer can create complications with your ISP. I personally don't think it is advisable. There are cheaper hosts that can provide you with your needs. I use hostgator - so far, no complaints and fairly happy.

Yes, it's hard work. I use Webfaction and I'm happy too.

I chose A Small Orange and I'm happy with their web hosting service and support www.asmallorange.com/services/hosting/ That being said, I would not recommend that you move off a free-hosted blogging platform to a web hosting situation, unless or until you have the skills to maintain the site by yourself.

It would be nice having it in your own home you have more freedome to have everything how you want it.

Timethief's right if you don't know FTP or how to install wordpress or other blogging software it's best you familiarize with hosted blogs.

there's a lot of info on this on the net you just have to look for it.

hostgator has a good deal on hosting
    $4.95/mo 3,000gb bandwidth 350gb disk space

The downside to hosting on your own is if the computer/server goes down, your page goes down. I tried this back in high school and my PC fried and my site went down. I think it is better to pay for a good hosting service, plus it is usually no more than 5 dollars a month give or take.

I have my blog hosted off my mediatemple account. It works great for me.

jjwright85, excellent info. I never even thought about that.

$25 will last a whole year of hosting here!

Probably a little over-kill on the resurrection of 2008 "hosting" discussion threads ... (more than 2)

I have some programming skills, so I've bought some webspace and manage the software myself. I'd be frustrated if I didn't - I want to make the code do things that it would be difficult to arrange using Wordpress or Blogspot's site.

I have 5 different webhost linux or asp.net but for simple blogging start on blogger and will switch later on.

Avoid netfirms, hostgator is good but beware to use antispam or they will shutdown your site, one that is great for support, but not well know is Ubiquity Hosting, will make detailed reviews on my blog one day.
