I am going to buy a new laptop computer before I move to Florida next month because I will need to leave my back-up desktop here.

Has anyone bought or heard about a really good new laptop? I will obviously be using it VERY frequently so cost isn't a major issue.
Thamks!

    Anything without Windows on it.

Seriously, though, you could do a lot worse than to get a lowend MacBook.

I should add that buying AppleCare for three years for a laptop is really worth it. Laptops get moved around too much. I had good service from them whenever mine acted up. That has been a huge factor in my sticking with Apple.

I have a Macbook and love it.

I hate anything that isn't a Mac! We can no longer afford a Mac, but I sure still miss it even after 15 years!

Thanks for the idea. I will investigate this more.

    Sony Vaio's are very good...

The best Advice I can give you is shop around
and find the laptop of your choice because one
store can have it at one price while another
store has the same laptop on sale...

That's what I did and I got my laptop for half
price compared to the other store

Thanks Tech. I have heard a lot of good things about Vaios. What stores do you think tend to have the best prices in general? Thanks!

Best buy is were I bought mine and I got accidental insurance for around $300.00 which has been a blessing the insurance covers hardware problems and
accidental I dropped my laptop and it got ran over by a car and best buy gave me
    new one...

The insurance covers for 3 years and no other store that I looked around at
could top this great insurance offer...

    P.s. you're welcome!!! mariamichelle,

I like my new Dell quite a bit. Buy refurbished from them, and you can save $100-150 or so. The Vaio recommendation is good too if money isn't a concern. They tend to cost a bit more than others.

      would not recommend the vaio

i had one years ago and all the peripherals were proprietary and swore i'd never buy another ....

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've always had Dell computers and been pretty happy with them, but I may try something new.

I've never had trouble with Gateway (a desktop and two laptops that have been fantastic). But I also agree that Windows Vista is horrific (IMO), so you might want to look into Apple. Really depends on what you're intending to do with it.

I think it is a wonderful idea. I really like the minimalistic approach. My son is about to buy one. I don't like the bar on the touch pad, which I think is a bit too tough to the touch, and the wireless is a bit weaker than the average PC (they probably skimped a bit on the chip), but otherwise it is probably the notebook that I am going to buy, when I am ready to pop.

I bought my MacBook Pro about 18-months ago. Rarely a day goes by that I'm not using it for something. It's the best thing I've even spent money on...next to my house.

I buy all Dell. You can build your own online. It is really great.

I have a gateway and I love it. Runs great and is one of the best laptops that I own. However, I can't recommend them because they got bought out by ACER and I'm not a fan of Acer. Sony makes great laptops but if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I would get a Mac Book Pro and yes, I would put Vista on it. The form factor is sweet and the display is incredible. The only gripe about Mac Books and many other laptops is the lack of a functional docking station.

Not sure what brands you have there.

    first choice a Mac

second a Sony but they are overpriced

    third an Asus

fourth if yoy travel a lot a Toshiba, the hinges are better and they seem to be more solid

I would pay for extended warranty and make sure it's not just for the local store

So are Macs...over priced that is! (but so worth the extra cost!)

    Sony-sonic Mac Toshiba.

Wow, these are very helpful comments! I'm in the market for a new laptop as well and I am now leaning towards getting a Mac. I never really considered getting one until now as I hear nothing but good reviews from other Mac owners. The bottom line is if you pay a little extra now for a good quality laptop like a Mac, you'll save a lot of money in the long run and not to mention headaches too! Thanks everyone for the great posts!

Acer laptops were the least troublesome brand we sold but I retired three years ago so I don't know if that still holds true. Might I suggest that whatever you get, also purchase either a 40gb flash drive or an external usb hard drive and RELIGIOUSLY back up. Laptops are great but when they crash, they often crash and burn big time. Data recovery is very expensive.

I use an IBM Thinkpad which is now called a Lenovo Thinkpad. I have had 2 of them over the last 10 years.

Despite me treating these machines horribly they have never failed. And when I say never I do mean never.

They cost a little bit more but I think they are worth it. I have no interest in saying that the machine fell apart for whatever reason and the extended warranty was so good they gave me a new one. I don't want it falling apart. I don't want to use the extended warranty.

I want the machine to hold up no matter what...and the IBM (Lenovo) does just that.

I give these machines 2 thumbs up...
