What do you think?

Well, they believe in Jesus and they do believe that Jesus is the saviour so yes, they would have to be.
    1. TheBigRuski
nope they do not look to Jesus for their salvation...they look to their JW writings.
  2. katelynjane
It probably depends on what your definition of Christianty is...

The Witnesses contend that the Bible has always condemned the mixing of religions because there can only be one truth from God.[29][30] They believe only their religion represents true Christianity and that all other religions fail to meet all the requirements set by God and will be done away with. [31] The Witnesses are opposed to 'councils' that unite or combine different religions. [32] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah%27s_Witnesses

There's a religious discussion group on BC. If you want a more in depth discussion visit it.
    1. TheBigRuski
      Can't...I was banned!
    2. MadameX
From the "anything goes" group we were all warned not to join if we couldn't take the heat? That's pretty ironic.
    3. dlowe
Yeah, the group has no credibility. Why do you think I stay away? I told everyone else to also.
    4. morgantj
[the group has no credibility. Why do you think I stay away? I told everyone else to also.]

meaning, "some people there don't confirm my beliefs, they debate them! How dare them." LOL.
    5. TheBigRuski
Never mind confirmation of beliefs...who cares about that! ....they simply show little respect and ban them if necessary.

A Religious Debate group run with NO Christians?

      Not so much.
    6. morgantj
TBR, You nominated yourself to be the Christian moderator there, which I did not accept because I did not find you to hold the traits of a fair moderator. I asked you to elect someone else, and you turned down the offer. Also, you know it was your excessive ill behavior that got you banned, and yes, it was necessary.
    7. voodooKobra
If there are any Christians who would like to moderate the forum, speak up. So far it's only Anok and Morgan in charge.
    8. TheBigRuski
      @morgantj and voodooK...

      you guys are hysterical!

morgantj...I can't even believe you posted those "reasons" as well...it is just so bizarre.

voodooK...how about discerning someone that just drops f-bombs when he is frustrated and name calls?

BTW...at the time, I was your ONLY Christian in the group. I was the most qualified in terms of someone actually wanting to engange with you. BTW...howz it going over there? You guys having fun chatting amongst yourselves?
    9. timethief
      @voodoo
I have no quarrel with the moderation in the Religious Debate group. I have found morgantj and Anok to be fair and balanced. During the time I have been a member, Madame X and several others in the group have also stated they are Christians so I don't view TBR's claim that he was the only Christian to be accurate. Moreover, what would it matter if there were no Christians were in the group? And why would anyone, particularly a person who knows so little about the contextual history of scripture desire to be a "token Christian"? That makes no sense to me.

I'm also wondering what relevance a statement like "BTW...howz it going over there? You guys having fun chatting amongst yourselves?" has in the context of the Religious Debate group. It typifies the kind of reportage that characterized TBR's behavior prior to one of his loss of control outbursts.

Edit: Indeed TBR was very active when it came to displaying his inability to remain within the confines of the debate model. Hence I was not surprised he was asked to leave.
    10. TheBigRuski
That's incorrect TT...in the beginning of the group, before you joined, I was probably the only one, and I know I was the most active.

  7. jafabrit
yes they are a christian denomination.
  8. Anniepooh
No. No. No. My husband's boss 9and half the staff) is JW and they do not believe in Jesus Christ as their personal savior. They believe he was a prophet. They can call themselves anything they want, the truth is that they are not Christian.
    1. jafabrit
According to this source they are a branch of Christianity. They may not practice the evangelical version, or the catholic version or the greek orthodox version, but they are a branch/denomination of christianity.

My Grandmother is a devote Jehovah's Witness and they are a Christian Denomination.

She tried to keep me in the Church but once I turned 18 boy, I made my getaway real quick.
Here is an earlier post all about it, enjoy.
    www.apsense.com/article/109921.html

Jehovah's Witnesses have been wrong on several occasions such as:
Their reoccuring prediction of the End of the World or Armageddon.

1914 was one of the more important estimates of the start of the war of Armageddon
by the Jehovah's Witnesses (Watchtower Bible and Tract Society).
They based their prophecy of 1914 from prophecy in the book of Daniel, Chapter 4.
The writings referred to "seven times".
The WTS interpreted each "time" as equal to 360 days, giving a total of 2520 days.
This was further interpreted as representing 2520 years, measured from the starting date
of 607 BCE. This gave 1914 as the target date.
When 1914 passed, they changed their prediction; 1914 became the year
that Jesus invisibly began his rule.
    Later it was changed to 1914, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975 and 1994, etc
were other dates that the Watchtower Society (WTS) or its members predicted.

    WRONG, WRONG, WRONG ALL WRONG.

Take a peek at the world's inaccurate and you tell me
    www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrl2.htm

My Father hated the Jehovah's Witness Congregation and always use to say to me
"Is your Grandmother still one of them Jehovah's Wickedness"?

Between my Grandmother and her fanatical sister who was a Catholic I can't say which is worse.
    1. lotusb
So they were wrong. That's true. But how about the fact that almost every Christian religion is "wrong" as well. Most of them celebrate paegan-oriented holidays that come from sometimes satanic practices?

      Example:
      Christmas
      Halloween
      Easter
      Birthdays
    2. Jeunelle
      @lotusb...I agree...most are wrong...how about that?
That may also explain why I am Free from attending any Church.
    3. MadameX
Christian religions celebrate Halloween and birthdays? Which ones?
    4. Dukepro25
JW's specifically don't celebrate those particular holidays.

      Where as most Christians do.
    5. flamingpoodle

      Example:
      Christmas
      Halloween
      Easter
      Birthdays

Of those, only your birthday is a Satanic holiday.

Christmas, Halloween and Easter were originally pagan fests from Europe. The church used these events to find favour with the locals.

Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians because they believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, but their beliefs and services are much different from other Christian religious sects. My God family was JW. They had me go to the Kingdom Hall (church) with them and knock on doors on Saturday mornings... sorry. Anywho, they are a very strange group.
    1. MadameX
I'm no expert, but I believe that Jehovah's witnesses explicitly state that Jesus was NOT the son of God.
    2. Jeunelle
@MadameX...No I attended Kingdom Hall and I can surely tell you that they do believe
Jesus Christ is God's son. On Sunday's they often discussed Christ in detail.
Also at their many Assemblies and Conventions which I so painstakingly attended.
    3. lotusb
@Madame, actually they do state that he was the son of God. They published an entire book about the subject. And to date that are the most accurate historically to the life of Jesus, including his birth and his death.
    4. timethief
An examination of their Bible provides some insight. The sections that do not appear are those that suggest the triune nature of God. They believe, not that Jesus Christ is part of a Trinity, but that, he is the first of God's creations; that he had a prehuman existence and that his life was transferred from heaven to the womb of a virgin, Mary; that his perfect human life laid down in sacrifice makes possible salvation to eternal life for those who exercise faith; that Christ is actively ruling as King.

Jehovah's Witnesses do not appreciate Holidays period
and they tell Members not to take part in Halloween, Christmas
and most Holidays yet they do have Passover.

Unleavened bread and wine is passed on Passover
and my Grandmother made sure she drank the whole cup. lmao

Members are taught to marry within the Congregation
and it is a big no no to marry outside of the Congregation.

In fact my Aunt (my good Aunt) got what is called "disfellowship", a sort of shunning the offenders
into a guilt and shame within and outside the Congregation. Here is a Link with more info www.jwfacts.com/index_files/disfellowship.htm
  15. markstoneman
I should think it matters what Jehovas Witnesses think, not what our own opinions might be. There was a time (the 16th and 17th centuries) when Catholics lumped Protestants into the same pot with "Turks" and the "Antichrist." Protestants did the same with Catholics, of course. Each side believed it had a monopoly on divine truth.

Edited to add: From the look of some BC threads I've seen in the past year, you'd think some people aren't too far removed from those times.
    1. MadameX
And from the responses, I'd think some other people aren't too far removed from keeping lions handy in case they might run across a Christian.
    2. markstoneman
Did I say something to bring out a Christian persecution complex and the Roman reference? Did I disrespect religion? Or are you following up on a broader context I missed? I know you've accused me of such disrespect in the past, and it surprises me every time.

It effects your life when they come knocking on your door!
    2. Jeunelle
@TBR...Speaking of knocking on your door.

They tried to get me to go to what is called "house to house",
this is where you show up to each house on a chosen block and preach to whoever answers their front door about the Congregation and to please attend soon.

The 1st time I tried I got chased by a very large Cujo type dog and I had to scale a fence,
that damn dog almost succeeded in completely ripping off my pantyhose.

That was my 1st try, my 2nd try I was approached by a completely naked man
wearing only cowboy boots behind a screen door. I tell ya, never a dull moment.
  17. markstoneman
By the way, Jehovah's Witnesses were another group that Nazi Germany persecuted, because they were somehow suspect. www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?lang=en&ModuleId=10005394
  18. Jeunelle
Well look a here...I tried to provide some facts here without going deep into judgement.
I do speak about my family for an example as some are currently still Jehovah's Witnesses
(well some are) my Great Aunt (Catholic) passed away so she cannot defend herself here.
The bottom line is people are going to argue about all kinds of crap no matter
what kind of discussion you bring up but somehow Religion brings out the worst in some of us.
    1. TheBigRuski
It is REALLY interesting what people find offensive and what they find non-offensive.
  19. Wisco
If you follow Christ, you're a Christian by definition. This idea that there are "true" Christians is a bunch of BS. Coincidentally, I made this point today in a blog post:

    griperblade.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-become-real-christian.html

It's about religion in politics, but the basics are the same.
    1. TheBigRuski
      However, JWs don't follow Christ.
    2. flamingpoodle
Yes, that's my definition, and the one I was taught growing up.
    3. Wisco
Of course they do. They just don't follow Christ the way you'd like.
    4. TheBigRuski
They follow their Watch Tower teachings.
    5. timethief
"A Christian is someone who follows Christ. There's no requirement that you have to be good at it when measured by the Evangelical zealot's scale of lunacy. You accept Jesus as your savior and that's pretty much it -- you're done. You're redeemed by faith, not actions. The worst Christian on Earth is still a Christian." -- wisco
    6. TheBigRuski
Yes, and JWs do not accept Christ as their savior.
    7. Wisco
They follow their Watch Tower teachings.

      Speaking of the Watch Tower:

      www.watchtower.org/e/200612/article_02.htm

If we exercise faith in Jesus, he will become both our “Everlasting Father” and our “Savior.” He will exercise his princely rule in a marvelous way as he serves as Ruler of his Father’s Kingdom...

Look I probably think they're even crazier than you do, but saying they aren't Christian seems pretty nutty, too. For people who aren't Christian, they sure waste a lot of time talking about Jesus being the Savior.
    8. TheBigRuski
Again, go to www.allaboutcults.org/jehovah-witness.htm and see if you do not think differently.
    9. Wisco
Too funny! You know, that'd hold some weight if the frontpage didn't show that they're also freaked out about Mormons, Christian Scientists, and Masons. What, nothing about the Bilderbergers or the Illuminati? Someone's behind all those kids in baggy pants, you know.

AllAboutGOD.com seems a little culty themselves. If you really need a hoot, check out their science page:

      www.allaboutgod.com/science.htm

      @Wisco
Would you like to become a member of the Religious Debate group?
      www.blogcatalog.com/group/religious-debate
  20. Jeunelle
    @TBR...That's right they follow Jehovah.
    1. Jeunelle
They follow Jehovah as their God
and Christ as the son of God but more emphasis on Jehovah.
  21. Dukepro25
I was under the impression that JWs believed that Jesus was just a prophet.

    Am I wrong?
    1. Jeunelle
@Dukespro25...I never heard any of that in the 18 years of me attending the Congregation before I flew the coop. I mean heck sometimes you have to think outside the box.
  22. Jeunelle
Ok here it is, pay attention

Jehovah's Witnesses do follow Jehovah as their God.
They do believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and died for our sins.
They do pray many different prays including adding at the end of each prayer
"Through Jesus Christ our Lord Amen".

In fact a typical prayer that my Grandmother made me memorize goes like this...

    "Heavenly father Jehovah
We thank thee for all that we received
We ask thee to watch over us and protect us from temptation and deliver us from evil.
All these things we ask through our Lord Jesus Christ. AMEN"

That is a typical pray and I can attest that they always use "Through Our Lord Jesus Christ Amen".
    In each prayer.
    1. TheBigRuski
However, they celebrate His death with an open meeting to invites...and I hear nothing of His ressurection from any JWs.
  23. Jeunelle
@TBR....That is the way they do it yes but they do speak of the resurrection,
also Christ resurrection to some extent, they just don't make a showcase of it
and that we can be resurrected in a paradise world made new.

The problem I have is the fact that Christ makes up the 7 Churches, the 7 Chakras
and they never discuss how to clean them out and making the Churches clean for the Lord
or Holy Spirit to dwell there. That is where they lost me.
  24. Phoenix1962
JW are Christians an you can verify that via their website:

    www.watchtower.org/e/20040301/article_02.htm
    1. Wisco
Dang, you beat me to it...
  25. bloggernoob
it's all derivative. i think this reinforces the "holier then thou" concept of religion. most people like that they feel special within their own religious in group. usually, most Christians subsets hate other subsets. i grew up Presbyterian and then switched to baptist. my pastor hated Presbyterians. It's all the same to me. i think all christian derivatives are equally ridiculous.
  26. LMT50
I have a sister and brother who are JV's and yes they are Christians. Since the majority of world religions and sects tend to claim possession of the "truth" I suspect Sherri's statement was a reflection of her new belief in her new "religion" and church.
