Are Men and Women REALLY equals?

In todays society women accomplish pretty much anything a man can. Men are no longer held to rediculous social standards, and women aren't required to wear skirts to clean the kitchen.
Times have changed...right?
Do you think men and women are equal? In what ways are they? In what ways aren't they? Do you think men and women SHOULD be equal?

I feel that no two human beings are truly "equal" in the sense that they are homogenized, the same, or able to accomplish all of the same things, regardless of gender.
That said, I believe every human's contribution to this world are equal (or have the propensity to be equal, presuming that they've tried to make a contribution).
For example, you may have a man who excels in engineering, creating new inventions, or making money to support his family, and you may have a woman who excels at child care, teaching, and running a home successfully (from soup to nuts, including the finances). Are they equal in the sense that they can do the same things? No, are their contributions to the family structure, thus society equal in value? Absolutely.
(You could reverse the genders if you like, doesn't matter one bit). SO yes, men and women are equally valuable to society, and both show a propensity and the capacity to excel at their individual talents.
Making them equals. (Equals not equal)-
There is a difference between "equal" and "equals", I'm asking if you think they are "equals". Physically, we are obviously not equal. Women's bodies genetically consist of more fat content while mens bodies genetically consist of more muscles. Things like that are obvious.
I'm more interested in how men and women balence each other out socially. Obviously the male and female role are more important that the actual gender. In a two parent household, it dosen't matter if the two parents are both the same or opposite genders, what matters is if there is balence in the household. Right?
-
I think women may have accomplished a lot but still in society there are many differences
between the sexes.
Men are still paid much more than women doing the same job.
A haircut for a woman still cost at least 3-4 times more than a mans haircut.
Women are still looked upon as untrustworthy in today's society, where as a man isn't,
he is more accepted and acknowledged faster than a woman.
Equality still has a long way to go.
In today's society they are not equals because society still has hangups about women
but genetics or gender they are equal, just equal from two different perspectives, ying and yang. -
Equality has a very long way to go. Some would argue that women are more than equal! Laws change but deep seated attitudes and role play take an awful lot longer. Most men I know still expect that household chores for example are the domain of the woman, and I know women who agree. I don't!
This is only one small part of equality obviously and work roles have come a long way but still have a long way to go.
Both sexes should work together using genetic/gender strengths to achieve the best outcomes. However, natural competition always arises among human beings and the gender equality issue is a part of this competition. -
I see your point, however the hair cut thing is unfair. Most women have more hair then men. My haircuts cost more than other women simply because I have very thick curly hair and it scares people...lol
-
lotusb... I agree it's unfair however with all that long hair, salons can use the excess to make cash from, as people in China cut and sell their hair so that celebrities like Beyonce can have long luxurious hair weaves. Salons can and do make a profit off the excess.
So either way it is still unfair to charge women that much and then turn around
and sell the excess for cash, which is what they do.
Salons make money off women two ways and it is unfair no matter how much hair they have more than men.
Who wants to pay twice for a service? -
I'm not debating either really, I'm just trying to provide some facts to back up what I said in this discussion.
Not sure if Indian hair is better than Chinese hair, hair is hair to me as long as it's not synthetic hair.
However I'm sure people will have their own preference and buy from whoever they consider to be a good source. -
I know this has absolutely NOTHING to do with this discussion, but I still wanted to point this out. If you're going to get your hair cut, especially if you have long hair, ask for the clippings to be saved, so you can take them with you. They can be made into wigs for children(and adults too, of course), and hair that's not long enopugh can be used for practice or product testing, at places where they don't do animal testing, so it helps in two different ways.

Although women have made enormous advances in society, I would have to agree with a previous statement that "sexual behaviours and reputations have always been double standards."
Men and women will never been seen as equal. For one, basic characteristics and features are very different. There are also differences in the way men and women think, speak and behave. Perhaps it would be important to define what equal is. Does it mean that the woman have to be as strong as man? Or how about men being affected emotionally the same as a women?
Seeking equality for women in a masculine world will never happen. However, if society would utilize the qualities a woman has in order to benefit society, then wouldn't women would be considered equal?
Understanding our roles in life is the first step in equality. If men and women could come to terms with their roles and utilize them to compliment each other, wouldn't this be considered equal? If people would live up to their true potential and focus their energies on appreciating the characteristics and features that make us different insead of rejecting them, wouldn't that be a step toward equality? The question then remains, will this ever happen?-
TSR...This is an excellent point you've raise and one I tried to make in my "How to be mysterious" discussion. There seems to be some hidden fears and hatreds as to the roles
that women should play as if she could ever be put into a box.
Her roles always seem to be pre-chosen by men who like nothing better than to keep control
over something that they have no real control over.
I also think that people tend to underestimate the one below.
Even though a woman may seem subservient, she is still the base and building block
of society and men would have no base or building block without her, she is necessary
and may even be more valuable than males because of it.
An Emperor or Ruler may be just that but without subjects he is nothing.
I have a firm feeling that the subservient or the underdog has an upper hand regardless. -
This society seems to imply that as long as woman remains subservient
and pleases man and be his footstool, no matter what comes of it, she will be let off the hook,
or even catered to.
NEVER will I stoop to such bullshit.
On the other hand, I don't like to hear women calling other woman _itches
because that gives men the upper hand and creates tension between women who may be competing for the attention of the male and it does nothing for women but decreases her value and worth in society.
She becomes a unworthy, untrustworthy female and so they would call her a _itch and many males act very nasty to women who they consider to be _itches and they are ordinary human beings. It is an unnecessary stigma placed on the female.
-
There is no way men and women can be equal. Nature has made it so. Therefore no matter what women has done, they are still made to be under men.
-
The only one that really pisses me off is the whole gay thing. The idea of two guys getting it on seems to be less appealing then two girls doing each other.
I'm not a homophobe, It's just that guys like that really piss me off when they avoid being gay but would pay money to see two women together. We're not due to see any "Guys gone wild: Spring break", but there's a huge market for the complete opposite.-
River, first of all there are TONS of women who get a kick out of watching gay porn...but most of all the reason the popular vote is for two chicks is because women have sensuous bodies. Curvy, soft, breasts, soft theighs, lips, the whole thing...men are burly, box shaped and muscular. Other than gay men and curious women, people don't want to see two guys together because...well it's not as pretty as two women.
Do YOU like watching guys go at it?

How do you know that for sure?
Mosuo is one of the last Matriarchal ruled places on this earth.
The men have nothing to say negative about this society either.
These women choose their lovers, husbands and run the show.
Many reporters went there to ask the men how they feel about living in this society of women rulers and they had nothing but good things to say.
So I would have to ask why can't this model be a world model?

I like to think that men and women equally compliment each other, where one lacks the other picks up the slack similar to Anok's
SO yes, men and women are equally valuable to society, and both show a propensity and the capacity to excel at their individual talents.
Equal...I don't think so because no two people are ever equal but can be equally valuable
-
let's face it, men are still a little more equaler than women, especially the pale assortment of men, much like myself. my understanding is that the
"little more" comes from a secret privilege we have, which i've learned to own.
however, i'm not sure what to do with it now that i own it. i mean it's not like i can sell it on ebay. so i sit patiently, waiting for instructions from women, but don't worry, i'm taking good care of it while you sort this stuff out.
i wrote two short yet to the point posts about this very thing. take a peek if you have a minute:

I think that women should be paid the same as men are paid for doing work of equal value. Until that takes place then actual equality does not exist.
Poverty - Healthcare - American Women & their Children
In 2005, over 14 percent of American women lived in poverty. Among single mothers, this number rose to over 31 percent. This is clearly unacceptable, both for the women and families immediately affected and for society as a whole.
* Nearly 1 in 4 girls does not graduate from high school
* Female dropouts earn on average 7 percent below the Federal Poverty Line for a family of three ($15,520 vs. $16,600) while women with high school diplomas earn on average 32 percent above that level ($21, 936 vs. $16,600)
* Girls make up 87 percent of students in traditionally female fields such as cosmetology and childcare and only 15 percent of those in traditionally male fields. Those who enter traditionally female occupations can generally expect to earn half—or less—of what they would earn in a traditionally male field
* Women still earn on average 78 cents for every dollar paid to men.-
UNless you are talking about getting paid different wages for different services, then no.
If a man works for company A and makes $10 per hour doing job B, then a woman working at company A should also make $10 per hour doing job B, and not $8 per hour. Why? Becasue if a man was hired instead of the woman, they would pay him $10, not $8.
There is no excuse or reason for income disparity based only on gender. -
What i said was: I think that women should be paid the same as men are paid for doing work of equal value.
I know male waiters who are being paid $1.50 more per hour than what female waitresses in the very same restaurant are being paid. That's just one example I can list lots of others too.
Like Anok says: There is no excuse or reason for income disparity based only on gender. -
This seems to assume that all people in the same job should receive the same pay. That doesn't make sense to me, since obviously some employees are more valuable than others. But even assuming that we're talking about initial hires with similar experience, employers usually make an offer based on what they think is necessary to get that person on board. If the applicant has suggested a salary range of $28-30k in her cover letter, most employers are not going to say, "No, we'll pay you $35k, because that's what we paid the last guy in your job." Business is business, and for better or worse is about maximizing revenue and minimizing expenditures.
-
Most women hold the front of taking care of children and children comes with expense
and so YES women should be paid equal if not a little more because they have dependents, especially single moms who front most of the baggage physically, emotionally, spiritually
and have no support from the male half.
Most Mothers today are busting their ass below poverty while raising children with no male/husband support. I say it is very unfair and unequal and seeks only to place women underneath in home based subservient roles. -
I can think of certain instances where woman get paid a lot better than men...
Just ask Donald Trump what he got paid every time he got divorced
In reality there is unfortunately very little equality in our world. Men and woman are not treated as equals, rich and poor are not treated as equals, not everybody is as clever as Einstein or as good at golf as Tiger Woods.
I did find it interesting a while back when there was a discussion around the tennis world to make the Wimbledon Prize money equal between the men and woman tennis players. At the time most of the men agreed that is should be the same, but there was an interesting argument that one of the players had. He said that because the men play more sets in total than the woman they should be paid more.
Of course the woman immediately said they were willing to play the same amount of sets.
-
Everyone should be equal before the law, in the workplace, having rights, and opportunities. But each one of us is an individual with our own set of talents and shortcomings.
-
I do think that the gap is closing in terms of opportunity but of course there are differences.
I just wrote about men's fashion today and lack of attention.
todaystyle.today.com/2009/01/08/why-dont-men-get-fashion-love/ -
men > women. ladies should stay at home, take care of children, and comfort their husbands after a long day at their work
-
Here is my question, one that I'm not even your I'm prepared to tackle on my own: should men and women be equals in a relationship, from a general point of view? should there be two "heads" of the household, or one. i know every relationship is different, im asking from a general point of view, with all it's flaws. Is it misguided for a man to aim to be the "head of the household" in modern day society? And is it ok for females to be the "head of the household" without us viewing the husband as a weakling?
I don't know yet actually, though I have my suspicions...-
Excellent question Black Critic! I need to ponder on the answer to this one, as my lifetime views on this point have been swayed in the last few years. When I get my feet solid back under me on this point, I will voice my opinion. In the mean time until I am sure, I am going to enjoy what you come up with.
-
-
Hmmm a tricky question ! If you had asked "should men & women have equal rights...?",then I would answer YES without a doubt! But as for should men & women be equal in all other aspects, I would have to answer NO! Now before you girls going running for a rope & send out invites to an impromptu lynching party, please read on.
1. It is a fact that generally (and I say generally because I am not talking about a 120kg Russian shot putter with arms like Garth), generally speaking women do not have a skeletal frame equal to that of your average man and therefore are incapable of matching a mans physical strength or abilities.
2. Mother nature designed us with clearly defined roles & as this design took around 4 million years to fine tune, I see very little to be gained by trying to alter what she has achieved.
3. Or if you choose to take a religious stance, was not Eve created from Adam's rib...? So quite obviously not equal & never would be.
4. The originally idea behind the womens liberation movement was indeed a very good idea, in as much as women should be granted equal rights to men. But unfortunately as is often the case with these groups or bodies etc they eventually become to powerful and lose sight of their original objectives. Just look for a moment at the miners union, the steel workers union & the dockers union in the UK. All brought into being to help protect the worker, which was great at the time, but where are all these industries now...??? They are dead, long gone, because powerful unions drove wages higher than could be met by these industries & so they could no longer compete on the world market! Now is not the same going to happen with Womens Lib...? are they also going to push to an extreme and eventually will all women lose their femininity..? A prospect that I dread !!!
Finally, I do not need any group or organisation to tell me how to treat a woman, I was brought up to always;
1. Give up my seat on a crowded bus or train, for a lady.
2. To behave correctly & not swear in the pressence of any female.
3. To assist carrying shopping or groceries.
4. To hold a door open for a woman.
5. If in a queue then to allow Ladies first.
6. To be ready & willing to go to a womans assistance, no matter what it is.
7. To always say "thankyou dear" after bedroom gymnastics hehehe No! that was a joke.
Women are the fairer sex & in my opinion they should always be treated as such, I think more of a problem these days is men's inability or reluctance to behave like a Gentleman !
Now please excuse me while I run for my flack jacket hahaha !
Taffy1957

So, you wouldn't hold a door open for a man whose arms were laden with packages? Or give up your seat to a frail old man? You wouldn't go to a man's assistance if he needed it?
I haven't ridden public transport in decades, but I gave up my seat to any person who appeared to need it more than I: pregnant women, elderly men, a woman with lots of parcels, a man with a cane, a child drooping with fatigue. I open doors and hold them for people...anybody...and I am a woman. That is what equality is about: it doesn't mean singling out one gender for special treatment (positive or negative), it means extending those positive gestures to everyone.
There was a time that being a firefighter was gender-restricted. Now, it is equal opportunity, provided you can pass the strength tests. This has kept women...and men...who are physically incapable of the work from becoming firefighters. It has also allowed women who have the strength and stamina to enter the field. That is equality...making bona fide occupational qualifications (BOQs) that screen out the incapable, but enfranchise the able, regardless of gender.
With rare exception, gender in and of itself should not be a gating factor in hiring, pay, promotion, or dismissal. It must never be a factor in enumerating rights.
I find it sad that you will continue to extend the old courtesies to women but don't do so for your same gender.
-
Well correct me if I am mistaken, but was this discussion about the elderly or infirm...? NO! it was about equality between men & women. Therefore my comments were restricted to the discussion.
So for your benefit ONLY! let me reiterate;
Yes I do offer the same curtousy to anyone in need, whether old, infirm, pregnant, laden down with shopping, young kids, a pet dog they can't control etc etc
So I am afraid your assumption is completely wrong !
As for finding it sad, yes I find it very sad that the whole world is starting to change, just to accomodate the minorities. As in your example of the fire service !
I wonder how long it will be before we start having women fire fighters putting in claims for back injuries whilst struggling to carry a man down a ladder..? Or one I know of personally, a woman British Telecom Engineer, who fell off the telegraph pole and then proceeded to pick up nice fat cheques for the remainder of her days. I also had experience with female motor mechanics whilst in the RAF and although they may well have the knowledge, putting it into practise required far more strength than 99% of them could muster, even in a team effort.

These experiences are not only reserved to women because I know plenty of men who also claim disability checks and they are perfectly healthy and some are even proven to be perfectly healthy years later after fooling us taxpayers.
So I'm afraid that this problem isn't reserved only to women.
I'm sure those are invisible fears that you have because most already know that women
don't seem to get away with anything in this society.
She is usually the 1st to be cussed, shunned and a negative stigma placed upon.
Women are unforgiven because society teaches that anything evil is the fault of the woman.

Oh please, after a long day at work I want somebody to give me a back rub too and massage my temples and feet while your at it. Chop Chop.

So tell me Jeunelle, what exactly do you think that women are missing out on...?
1. maybe having their kids taken from them after divorce...? which does happen to most men
2. maybe you should go live in the UK, where at the age of 16 , if your a girl & get pregnant, you get a council flat, fully furnished & rent free ! Oh such hardship eh.
3. Or maybe you still have not accepted that mother nature saw fit to give you PMS/PMT once a month...? and because of this you are on a one woman crusade to punish all men for your endless suffering !!!
4. Or maybe the hardship of having a house transfered to you after divorce & having some poor sap to pay for it until the mortgage is paid off is what makes life so hard for you....?
5. And this long day at work that you've had, I bet it wasn't a 12 or 15 hour shift was it....?
Twist it which ever way you want, men & women are not the same, they are not physically equal & were never designed to be so !
So please stop griping about it & get a life !
Taffy1957 - www.diy-pc-fix.com -
So tell me Jeunelle, what exactly do you think that women are missing out on...?
1st of all I didn't say a thing about women missing out on anything, so where did you get that in my comment?
"So please stop griping about it & get a life" ! you said.
I had no idea that leaving my views and facts was considered to be griping.
GET A LIFE???? I have a life and it had nothing with do with you Daffy.
Taffy I am not of those women, neither is any of the women in my family tree.
Your attempts to place ALL WOMEN as GOLD DIGGERS holds no FACT and is completely FALSE.
3. Or maybe you still have not accepted that mother nature saw fit to give you PMS/PMT once a month...? and because of this you are on a one woman crusade to punish all men for your endless suffering !!!
PMS IS NATURAL part of a woman's chemistry and God made it this way so blame women for it, go blame GOD.
I find you to be way off and insultive to women but hey what else did I expect from someone with a pea brain. -
You are the typical man that's out to lunch
Why don't you talk about all those UK girls who are sold into sex slavery and prostitution.
That is the real issue here so what do you as man have to complain about?
You are too far gone to even counsel.
Would you rather see both the child and mother out on the street?
Trust me you don't have a thing to complain about and for your information I don't hate men,
that is FALSE TOO. I like "good men" one with a brain not a ding bat like you.

-
My dear Jingle Balls,
you will notice in all my previous comments that I totally refrained from personal insults, however you, having such a remarkable command of the Queens English did not afford me the same courtesy, therefore I feel it only fair that I now treat YOU as my equal in all areas!
This was your comment on women;
“women don't seem to get away with anything in this society.
She is usually the 1st to be cussed, shunned and a negative stigma placed upon.
Women are unforgiven because society teaches that anything evil is the fault of the woman”.
Now that sounds to me like your saying women are hard done by…??? (Tell me were you looking in a mirror whilst thinking up that rubbish…?)
So for those of us that on an evolutionary scale, would be placed somewhere between an amoeba & various species of sea sponge, my comments with reference to women being hard done by, were based & in response to your comments above OK.
Now then Jingle balls, this in case it has slipped your hormone drenched excuse for a sponge, was the original question posed on this thread!
Do you think men and women are equal? In what ways are they? In what ways aren't they? Do you think men and women SHOULD be equal?
I being a fairly reasonably minded human being, aired the view that yes women (not including you of course), should have equal rights to men ! I think any right minded person male or female would also agree with that. I also aired the view that in my humble opinion it is, in many cases, men lacking in ungentlemanly behaviour that is more of a problem these days, than women not having equal rights! Oh & this obviously does not include the Taliban (A small minority group that you would fit in very nicely with)
You then, (whilst over taxing that one lonely brain cell that is happily playing ricochet inside your empty head !), decide to have a go at me about not giving up my seat or not offering assistance to the old, the infirm, or anyone else in need !
READ the question above in bold type, does it ask about the old, the infirm or any other person in need..??? Where is the logic…? Or is it the case that in my misfortune I have stumbled upon the very person that all the jokes about Blonde haired bimbos are derived.
If you have some genuine gripe or moan I will happily listen to it & if it really is that bad, then I can offer lots of advice on early termination of what is obviously a very sad & meaningless existence! On the other hand, if your continual unfounded & totally unprovoked dribble is just your way of getting off! Then please hurry up and get it over with because most of us are getting very bored & cheesed off with your incessant bitching & griping!
Oh & finally I have no doubt that your balls are bigger than mine, but lets face it, your’s probably equate to the size of your mouth or perhaps the tree trunk perched precariously on your shoulder! But a word of friendly advice, I wouldn’t advertise such a fact as it is only likely to convince everyone that you are in fact one of life’s oddities of nature & probably spend many a sleepless night dreaming of being a REAL MAN.
Regard Taffy1957 (as he puckers up for a bit of tonsil hockey) – www.diy-pc-fix.com -
You obviously have a problem with women but just remember how you came into this world.
Women must be something foreign to you that you still can't understand with your Cro Magnon type pea brain. All that garbage that you must of spent all night trying to write is FACTLESS
and IRRELEVENT and just shows everyone the size of your brain capacity.
That's just how small it is baby, you are a waste of this discussion.
I don't have to dream when I know for a fact that my balls are bigger than yours and for your information you are in NO WAY MY EQUAL. You are beneath me so get on your knees and look up. -
Despite the immense strides that have taken place to provide equality women, there is still much work to be done. Even in America, women can be treated like second class citizens based on their sex. The "glass ceiling" still exists putting a cap on a woman's advancement and pay. If men and women were truly equal, it wouldn't be possible for a man to receive thousands of dollars more for doing the same job. If men and women were equal, women wouldn't dominate the romance writing field (and no other genres).
On the other hand, there is discrimination by women against other women who choose to stay home to raise a family. That's a job in and of itself. If men and women were truly equal, they would receive the same pay for the same job, and whether a man or a woman chose to stay home to raise a family, there would be no social stigma attached.
Of course, in other countries women have it much worse. I just read about a 15-16 year old "woman" accused of witchcraft in Asia who was burned alive. I find this offensive, especially since it always a man accusing and rarely if ever is it a man accused. -

Oh and as if that wasn't enough, I live in a beautiful tropical paradise, beaches lined with coconut palms & crystal clear water.
As for anyone here agreeing with anything I say, I really couldn't care less! You see unlike YOU I have no need to prove myself to anyone, I am very happy & have no axe to grind one way or the other. I come on here pass a few comments, meet a few people, exchange ideas etc etc. Oh and if I'm very lucky, just once in a while, I stumbble upon the sort of person that I used to meet daily, when I lived in the UK & thank the lord I had the good fortune to leave all that behind me.
One final point before this oldman retires to bed with his beautiful wife, if your so full of yourself & you are so sure that your points are just & founded in truth, then where are all your fellow women rushing to back you up...??? Maybe they also see that on occasion there are women that do more harm to the womens equality struggle, than their male counter parts !

The lives of men and women have equal value to God as it should be for society. There are physical differences that make us no lesser than the other ...only different. These differences make each sex unique and complementary of each other. Will and determination have much to do with what you accomplish and sexual genre is not the absolute ruler of your life...
everyone has the ability to control their destinies, whether man or woman.

From the article: Equality means the death of chivalry, whether you like it or not. My girlfriend and I alternate who pays, and if it's an expensive classy meal we each pay our own. THAT is equality. If the only reason you can give me for wanting something is "I'm a woman," then fuck you. -
My 5 cents on equality
Oh.. I was collecting myself and looking around for some article on the subject that could sum up my opinion. But since I couldn't find one I tried to sum it up.
I live in the worlds most equal country and compered to most women in the world I have many more possibilities. This however says allot more about the state of the rest of the world than of my society.
I base my opinion on the following facts:
If my name had been Göran I’d have more chances to be a member of a board of directors than as a woman. (according to statistics in sweden)
I have female friends who are scared from walking home late at night. Just cause they are women and might get attacked as a consequence.
I don’t have male friends who are scared of walking home at night..
It’s not just a question of women liberation it’s just as much about mans. Men aren’t equal when it comes to freedom of expressing their feelings, being weak, asking for help or just talking about stuff. Men die prematurely due to this according to various studies. They also don’t have equal rights in parenting cause they’re thought of as being less capable parents.
No, the world is not equal. But the question of equality starts with equal opportunities, rights and responsibilities. And as long as it's viewed as a female issue and not a human we're not further equal. -
Yes agree on that point, it just sounded so typical manly and not on the target, as if it's only a - who holds the power issue. And why get all fuzzy about it, haven't men got enough power as it is? Is this really a problem at all?
I have another generalisation for you to think about but I'll post it as a new discussion.. -
I gotta go with Voodoo on this one. Special treatment simply because of gender assignment doesn't foster equality.
Now, we're not talking about old fashioned good manners when in the company of others - regardless of gender. Or being treated according to your actual ability. But actual special treatment.

Equal before the law and that's all. I actually prefer feminine company so I can't personally guarantee equality. I guess there are people who prefer men and that kind of balances out things. As to job opportunities there should always be jobs reserved for men: like the role of James Bond for example, though again I consider his female companions somewhat better

No, that would assume we can compare with a common measurement in how we live. Even the same activity is not the same activity with any two individuals. Accepting men and women as equals is like treating everyone the same. That is a mistake in our society out of ignorance and trying to make rules the same for people in groups because we don't make time and resources to suit everyone as individuals. Then comes lack of, confidence lack of individualism, frustration being the same, rebellion, pretending were not rebelling but really are, someone saying something very cool, everyone says hey, why not be equal with a side dish of "arsenic mayonnaise" in the background meaning we only believe we are equal but not really. Blah blah blah.
