I've only been on BlogCatalog in an active sense for about two weeks. I started out by including the humorous blog that supports my upcoming book. Today, I added the blog about my wife's heart condition, and a blog of poems is pending.

If I'm hoping to draw visitors predominantly to the humor blog, is having the others there reducing the chance the desired blog will get the attention I hope? Or does having more than one cast a wider net?

yes. human beings are complex organisms with mixed emotions. So if you could provide them with the right mixture of content they would like it.

having multiple blog is always a good idea to create different vertical for different contents.

    anything multiple is awesome..
    girls like it!

I understand that they may like the variety of content types, but does having more than one blog make followers move from one to the next, or does the person hit your profile and say, "Whoa...seven blogs...where do I even start?"

As a reader, I don't see a problem. I like information, I love to read. As a writer, I've had multiple blogs before and found it difficult to find the time to keep up with them. I only recently started blogging again and hell, I'm having a hard enough time keeping up with one, lol. Don't know if I have the motivation anymore, or it could be 1 computer to 4 people in this house!

That's part of my issue. My humor blog is updated often. The heart health blog about my wife is updated whenever there's news. The poetry blog is pretty big already, so it may not be updated often. So I'm a bit worried that some will distract from the one I most want people to visit.

I wouldn't worry about distracting people, if you remember to put posts on a given topic in the blog that focuses on that topic.

And, in my view, if you're interested in increasing traffic, I'd look to the viewer statistics - and see what's popular, and what's not.

Sorry to hear about your wife's heart condition.

Now that I am reading the comment chain, your concern appears to be that listing your blog inventory on BC will detract viewers from your primary blog? Hmmm... Don't list them?

I would have thought you would be asking how to interconnect multiple blogs - as to attract non-niche/category traffic?

We have an Internet Marketing Blog that receives a lot of traffic from links on Source Blogger.

The content of each of the blogs is vastly different from the others. So, is someone who wants to read about my wife's heart blowing up in her chest also going to want to read about unfortunate incidents involving vacuums, penises and superglue? I'm not sure.

Personally, when I see a person with a list of blogs, it does give me the "where do I start" feeling. I'm more likely to follow one blog versus 4 blogs by the same person. There is nothing wrong with having 1 blog with variety.

I have two very different blogs, but it seems folks tend to pick and choose based on their interests.

If there were a large list of blogs, though, I can't say whether it might be too overwhelming, and the messaging would get diffused.

I agree with AroundTheWaygirl, I don't think it's a problem for the reader. It can be difficult to keep more than one blog populated with quality content. The two topics covered by your existing blogs - and the pending blog - obviously matter a great deal to you and your wife, so it should be less difficult to keep the content interesting and hopefully attract visitors.

I've got eleven blogs now, and the 'wide net' approach works for me. My goal wasn't to have lots of blogs, but to have a blog that focuses on a fairly narrow topic. And, new topics have come up.

As for wanting to boost traffic to one blog over another - I suppose there are ways of doing that, but I follow the stats and see what people are interested in. For some reason, Apathetic Lemming of the North ( apatheticlemming.blogspot.com/ ) is the most popular - it's the one I limit to things I find interesting. Which covers quite a lot of ground.

On the other hand, it's mostly about astrophysics, interior design, geology, biology, architecture, information technology, and a few other related topics.

The trick, I think, is to make the focus of each blog tight enough to make post content predictable enough to encourage repeat visitors. On the other hand, there's the Lemming.

Yes - we must effort to reduce all blogs to the BS - the "Blog Singularity." Resistance is futile!!!

All kidding aside, I can see how they might be, although some folks can pull it off rather well - especially when bouncing across subjects.

God knows just "socializing" (i.e, FB, Twitter, other blogging platforms that carry my posts, etc.) my existing posts takes as long as actually coming up with the post in the 1st place. I can only imagine what doing so with multiple blogs might be like...especially if they are mildly "successful" (with readers returning frequently for updates).

I find that when I look at a persons profile in BC and notice they have more than 1 blog, rarely do I check out every single one. Instead I tend to go for the most interesting looking one to have a look.
Having said that though, the most important part of blogging in my opinion is to get the traffic coming from search engines, which then would mean that having multiple blogs won't or shouldn't effect any of your blogs popularity. In BC it might make a difference but if you want to highlight a certain blog to give it more attention then I suppose giving it a great description and headline name will attract BC members to it more.
