i don't like to hide myself haha

I love being what I am. Actually I'm quite proud of myself (everything hahaha)! What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG)

Happy New Year one and all!

An avatar dosen't have to be a photo of yourself. It can be something else, as long as it's interesting, funny, a logo or whatever!

    Right?!
    1. siralmo
      yes that is correct

Talking head silhouettes are hard to relate to.

thats what i think, thats why i ask this question

Is anyone in a forum like this really "credible"? An avatar associated with a poster makes him/her seem more human and accessible (even if the avatar isn't human),and makes that poster more recognizable in threads, so that more of an impression forms...but credible?
    1. siralmo
yes, i would say credible beacause you can associate, certain thoughts, beliefs and behaviours to users
  5. pointlessbanter
No.. I imagine that most of them are pedophiles or mass murderers.
    1. MadameX
Do you think that being a pedophile or a mass murderer automatically renders one not credible?

Most of the spam I receive on BC comes from posters using the default silhouette for an avatar. I now think of spam, "make money blog" or aggressive marketing whenever I see one and treat with caution.

I agree. Even a simple picture is better than none.

I don't have a pic avatar because I have only translated the musings on my blog - even though I by and large share these thoughts, to the extent I understand them - so having a pic would be misleading. However someone put up a youtube vid of my close buddy, who was also an accomplished artist, so I may include that in my blog down the line. Meanwhile, Louis-Ferdinand Celine is my avatar.

An avatar somehow leaves the impression of assurance. Assurance that you are talking to someone who knows what to do. Talk about relating to someone surefooted.

"Hey, this guy has an avatar -- which means he knows his way around here. I can talk to this guy without any problems!"

I tend not to read posts by users without avatars, I think they're usually spammers & not worth the time.
    1. siralmo
WOW!! so you have associated UWA's (users without avatar) with spammers
    2. souldrift
      Quite bad really, huh?

I figure, if they have the know-how to publish a blog post, they can surely figure out how to add a photo to their profile.

The shadow images even hide the beady eyes and weak chins and moustaches of people you would not trust.

      ROFLMAO

My avatar represents what I've been looking up to all my life.

They definitely are not credible. Believe nothing they say. I on the other hand speak only the truth. I am honest, and sincere. I am not, repeat not, a fourteen year old girl playing a 46 year old man on the internet.

I skip over their posts often. I don't feel they'll be around long if they don't attend to the details.

Not everyone is blogging to be known or following blogs to be known.

I do NOT take any person with noname avatars seriously in here. Out there in the 'real world' (blogs/gravatars/etc) I blame the site master.
  16. kat822
I guess it does in a way...but who couldn't find jack payne credible?
  17. footiam
I suppose so. Even with avatars, it doesn't mean that will be credible. You can always hide behind a mask.
    1. siralmo
      i don't know about that...

this is my reply to MadameX

"yes, i would say credible beacause you can associate, certain thoughts, beliefs and behaviours to users"

even if they are putting on a mask, when you see them on the forum, the masked version is the person you are talking to, just as a normal person changes and allows others to develop relations, the does the the masked version does also.
    2. Sebastyne
Avatar is a lot easier to associate to a person than a name, so even if it was a masked or unreal version of you, you can still link that persons general ideas and attitudes to that avatar. With the default avatar, they're all in the same grey mass...

Siralmo,I think that I agree with what you're saying, just wouldn't call it credibility. You can get to know an online persona and to some degree know what to expect from that persona even if it is not genuine. But "credibility" to me means something different--that a poster is trustworthy and that if he provides information it can be relied upon and such--and in my mind an avatar does nothing to enhance that.
    4. siralmo
i get what you mean but i also used "take as serious" in my discussion breif,

i looked up credible and this is what i got,

Definitions of credible on the Web:

capable of being believed; "completely credible testimony"; "credible information"(a common but incorrect usage where `credulous' would be appropriate) credulous; "she was not the...credible fool he expected"
appearing to merit belief or acceptance; "a credible witness"
      wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Credibility is the objective and subjective components of the believability of a source or message. Traditionally, credibility is composed of two primary dimensions: trustworthiness and expertise, which have both objective and subjective components. ...
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credible

believable or plausible; authentic or convincing
      en.wiktionary.org/wiki/credible

i don't know what that means for you but i think the definition of credible is fuzzy enough to use in this instance

I have a definite credibility ranking going with avatars, and the lowest ranking ones are the ones without any. I kinda feel sorry for them, like they were a bit dumb or something... Newbies, who don't know their way around the net yet or spammers as previously pointed out. Either way, their level of engaging into the community must be really low and therefore not really credible.

Avatars change the way I read their post - like if the avatar is a woman, it's like a woman's voice when I read it. If it's an object, it's like a toy talking.
If there's no avatar, it's like the user is a bot or something.
  20. drjay1966
Do you really think this SuperGrover avatar makes me more credible?
    1. Sebastyne
      Incredibly, yes.
    2. siralmo
      actually yes

Supergrover is awesome compared to the shady silhouette

besides supergrover just tells me that "Drjay1966 was here"
  21. jjmezzio
I take users with half naked women avatars less seriously. Sex exploitation to attract people to come to your blog. Nah, I'll pass.
  22. siralmo
i still have yet hear from some non avatar people
