An avatar dosen't have to be a photo of yourself. It can be something else, as long as it's interesting, funny, a logo or whatever!
Right?! -

Is anyone in a forum like this really "credible"? An avatar associated with a poster makes him/her seem more human and accessible (even if the avatar isn't human),and makes that poster more recognizable in threads, so that more of an impression forms...but credible?

Most of the spam I receive on BC comes from posters using the default silhouette for an avatar. I now think of spam, "make money blog" or aggressive marketing whenever I see one and treat with caution.

I don't have a pic avatar because I have only translated the musings on my blog - even though I by and large share these thoughts, to the extent I understand them - so having a pic would be misleading. However someone put up a youtube vid of my close buddy, who was also an accomplished artist, so I may include that in my blog down the line. Meanwhile, Louis-Ferdinand Celine is my avatar.

I tend not to read posts by users without avatars, I think they're usually spammers & not worth the time.

The shadow images even hide the beady eyes and weak chins and moustaches of people you would not trust.

They definitely are not credible. Believe nothing they say. I on the other hand speak only the truth. I am honest, and sincere. I am not, repeat not, a fourteen year old girl playing a 46 year old man on the internet.
I skip over their posts often. I don't feel they'll be around long if they don't attend to the details. -
I suppose so. Even with avatars, it doesn't mean that will be credible. You can always hide behind a mask.

i don't know about that...
this is my reply to MadameX
"yes, i would say credible beacause you can associate, certain thoughts, beliefs and behaviours to users"
even if they are putting on a mask, when you see them on the forum, the masked version is the person you are talking to, just as a normal person changes and allows others to develop relations, the does the the masked version does also. -
Siralmo,I think that I agree with what you're saying, just wouldn't call it credibility. You can get to know an online persona and to some degree know what to expect from that persona even if it is not genuine. But "credibility" to me means something different--that a poster is trustworthy and that if he provides information it can be relied upon and such--and in my mind an avatar does nothing to enhance that.

i get what you mean but i also used "take as serious" in my discussion breif,
i looked up credible and this is what i got,
Definitions of credible on the Web:
capable of being believed; "completely credible testimony"; "credible information"(a common but incorrect usage where `credulous' would be appropriate) credulous; "she was not the...credible fool he expected"
appearing to merit belief or acceptance; "a credible witness"
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
Credibility is the objective and subjective components of the believability of a source or message. Traditionally, credibility is composed of two primary dimensions: trustworthiness and expertise, which have both objective and subjective components. ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credible
believable or plausible; authentic or convincing
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/credible
i don't know what that means for you but i think the definition of credible is fuzzy enough to use in this instance

I have a definite credibility ranking going with avatars, and the lowest ranking ones are the ones without any. I kinda feel sorry for them, like they were a bit dumb or something... Newbies, who don't know their way around the net yet or spammers as previously pointed out. Either way, their level of engaging into the community must be really low and therefore not really credible.
