Anyone else notice the vamp trend lately?

Are there too many vampire themed movies and television shows being produced these days?

Yes. It's all because of the Twilight books and the lack of creativity on the part of others.

Actually, the vampire has been one of the most enduring archetypes ever since people started telling each other stories. There have been instances of the vampire myth in almost any culture you care to name. Something about the vampire speaks to the easily scared and the romantic in all of us, I think, hence its enduring popularity.

I think the OP is referring specifically to the fact that there is a TV series, a movie franchise and another vampire series (the Vampire diaries)coming on in the fall, as well as a relaunch of Buffy in the works. Vampires are everywhere right now.

I think you're right. I just felt like giving a little history lesson is all...

I hate the direction that vampires have taken - they're meant to be monsters and yet more-so now than ever we're made to feel sympathetic towards them.

      ^^ This. I agree.

There's a similar trend with pirates. Children love pirates like teens love vampires.

It seems that vampires and pirates have some really good PR nowadays.

They are trying to, but this trend will pass (I hope).

It is hardly a recent trend... think Buffy the Vampire Slayer (film 1992, series started 1997), Blade (1998 for first film) etc.

Going back further, Christopher Lee was Draclua in about 6 films from 1958!
