There are so many discussions on this topic. Do a search and you'll get tons of answers. What's interesting though is bloggers who are about making money, which is fine, cannot comprehend that some bloggers just do it because they love expressing and sharing their passions, creativity and interests without ever thinking about money as an outcome.

You know the answer
Most people work really hard at blogging and don't make very much money at it. Then there are some bloggers who make a decent living and others who make a really great living.
If you are serious about making money from your blog, you should attend the SOBcon08 in Chicago. Its a 3 day, intensive, immersive blogging course (they describe as a MBA in blogging) and when you leave there you will have an entire action plan that will create a business for you from your blog.
Blogcatalog has sponsored a prize in conjunction with top blogger ChrisG where we are paying up to $1,000 in expenses for the winning blogger to go to SOBCon. The prize includes one on one consulting with ChrisG and an introduction to all the presenters at SOBCon08.
To find out more go to ChrisG's blog. The entry requirement is a blog post explaining why you should be selected.

Of course, there are many of us here that are monetizing their blogs successfully. Is it fast? Is it bucketfuls of money overnight? No! to both questions. To earn a serious income, you have to have a business plan, and work it just like any business.
I invite you to visit other blogs here at Blog Catalog and research what they are doing by really looking at what you see on their sites. Enjoy their posts and great content, but also look at the blog with your marketer's eyes.

It takes time... I started blogging 20 days ago now but I already earned around $50 which is for me excellent since I just started. However, I'm sure I still have a lot to do to make a real living from blogging. Visit my blog: www.tfgblog.com

My blog basically acts an article site, giving news and resources on how to make money online. I don't make money online through blogging yet but I have made some through affiliates freelance seo work and also internet marketing joint venture giveaway.
The point blogging can acts like a platform to drive you traffic to your affiliate sites or adsense using web 2.0 strategies, after all as someone pointed out, making money is like a business. you can casual money, or big money depends on how hard you work, while for me, I am logging for big money.

I am not earning a single penny on my blog, as I do not have any ads on it. But somehow I'm thinking that it might be nice to make just *one* penny, just to be able to say that you crossed the line.. Anyway, I'm not planning on even trying to make my blog into any kind of moneymaker. It exists purely for my own amusement, and if other people find any pleasure from reading it, that's a great bonus
Money is definitely no motivation.
Do you think that the desire to make money out of your blog could have a negative effect on the content of it? That if you consciously try to write posts to attract more traffic, it could in effect turn your blog into something worse, kind of make it less genuine? -
I don't blog to earn money, but I'm certainly making money online.
The "Free Content Supported By Advertising" business model isn't as easy as it used to be. Most of the free content is like a bad B-Rate movie because publishing online is so darn easy now-a-days, everybody and their dog can put up a site or a video and state their (unqualified) opinion.
In addition, all the adsense-hungry marketers don't care about quality content because then people won't click on the google ads as often.
With all the chaff out there, people are getting sick and tired of trying to find some good content.
They want well organized information from an expert with credentials.
And they want to learn the easy way, from a teacher who speaks to them, rather than from hard-to-read words on a computer screen.
In other words, start getting skilled at creating videos.

In the month of March 2008 .. I averaged $51.49 per day (from all sources) in gross revenues. However, after expenses, I think I was short $100 and had to put money back in to cover my expenses (hosting, writers, plugin upgrades, etc) ... That's on a cash basis. On an accrual basis it shows that I made a little profit for March - but, I won't see some of the earnings for several months after earning it.
You can check how I am doing this every month at HART-Empire.com where I am documenting it. And, yes - I think it's possible to earn money from blogging (unless your blog is about how to make money from blogging - that's been done to death).
But - I don't make money on all my blogs - just a handful, and kiwipulse said it best ... . If you don't earn money you will earn experience and, as time progresses you learn, and do earn experience that helps you in the future.
Advice On:
Try first to make your site the best site you can for the readers, then try to bring traffic to it. Once you can do those two things, if you want to monetize - it gets to be easy. Accept the fact that you are not going to pay your mortgage payment next month if you just started a blog last month - so, re-focus from making money to making your blog successful

I guess it all depends on how you market it and how much traffic you get. Yes, I do make money online but the REAL money is through affiliated marketing...

I agree with whojaybe...in the beginning I was a part time blogger, making approx $200-$300 month. A combination of using pay per post, and my affiliate programs. In April I lost my job, so this month I am doing it full time, so we'll wait for the outcome.
The affiliate programs I use, I just wrote a post about the ones that make me money...it's a short list, I've been with a couple of them for years...you can check it out here if you're interested...
