A number of people feel the following image is a disgrace. How do you feel about TIME's modification of the Iwo Jima photo?

    No problem whatsoever
  2. DOUGGOFFdotCOM
    That's actually pretty clever!
  3. monkeytale
Meh... I don't see a problem with it. More attention should be paid to this effort, even for those who don't believe we've caused any of it. If nothing else, curbing warming efforts are good for the environment for the most part regardless of a person's beliefs in global warming.

just because you CAN use photoshop to do nifty photo manipulations like this - does not mean you SHOULD do that.

why take such an emotionally charged image (and one that was revitalized after 9/11) for an essentially controversial issue? have we actually declared war on global warming? is global warming like hitler and tojo?

this image seems like media shock value instead of something which truly forwards the conversation. that's my personal take on it - i'm sure the creative director responsible for it would disagree.

    [EDIT]
I don't find it offensive or anything, personally. i just don't think it's the best cover they could have done for the issue.

That's exactly what I was gonna say, thanks Ender.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should (you shouldn't always say what you are thinking).
I think this shows bad taste and will rightfully discredit Time magazine.

    Global warming is a myth!..
    1. monkeytale
Global warming isn't a myth. It's a naturally occurring event. To what extent man is responsible for the current warming trend seems to be the debate.
  6. PetLvr
the phallic image of getting a hard-on for global warming does not make sense to me - but, i am not offended.
    1. barryfromtexas
      Which part?
  7. modernglam
Great pic, Imo. More importantly, it immediately grabs your attention, which is a good thing if it means that more attention is paid to the environmental challenges that we all are facing.

    I don't care.
    1. Donlewis
Obviously a fake. Where you going to find four goof-balls who would work that hard?
    2. ekim941
Chelle, I think cabalists everywhere are offended by that remark.
    3. Anok
      My hero....*sigh*

  9. Shiley
    I'm fine w/ it.
  10. Donlewis
Leave it to Time to not understand how you plant a tree.
    1. ekim941
They don't know how to erect wood either.
    2. barryfromtexas
      Ditto on both remarks!
  11. Sylvia
    I love it.
  12. EcoInsomniac
I think it works. No offense taken by it.
  13. ShanLeeCook
I think sometimes people take the image more seriously than the symbol.
I don't care if an American flag burns as long as America doesn't burn.
I think that might be what people are missing here. I have no problem with it.

I'm with you. I could care less how many flags of any nation are burned as long as America doesn't burn.

I really don't think the Earth is warming. I think the Earth is going through a natural process like it's been doing every 1400 years. I'm all for helping the environment (I'm Pagan) but I think this is just something else from the government to keep us all in a state of fear. Remember when they would flash those "Terror Alerts" every other day? This is just something new.
    1. daniel23
      I agree.
    2. offendedblogger
Yep, I agree. Everyone should be concerned about keeping this lovely planet clean.

I am not Pagan, or Bolshevik just to clarify.
    3. barryfromtexas
      :Bolshevic" (in a sneeze-like manner :))
  15. Anok
I think it's clever - but also kinda, hmm, camp. Or badly done. I'm not sure which.

    1. Donlewis
Its that kind of rapier sharp decisiveness that makes me want you all the more Anok.
    2. Anok
I also have a steel trap mind!

Wait, what were we talking about?
    3. Donlewis
Pretty sure it was the cruelty involved with steel traps. (Too many drugs in the 70's)
  16. voodooKobra
I like it, but it could be better if they didn't use a full-color tree with a primarily one-colored statue.
  17. JoyChaser
I wouldn't say I'm offended by the image, exactly, but it doesn't work for me. I believe mankind has caused a damaging effect on the earth's environment (warming? maybe not, but definitely species extinction). I also come from a pretty strong military background: I grew up near an army base, several family members and friends have been in the military. It does seem a bit in bad taste to use the Iwo Jima image in such a...flippant way? I dunno. They could have done better, I thought.
  18. AngieA
What pic? I dont see a pic?
  19. BlogBadly
    It's great.
  20. MadameX
I'm not "hot" over it, but I think it's tacky. And I don't think it works much as an attention-catcher...it looks trite and it doesn't arouse my interest in the article, at all; rather, it creates an impression that the article itself is going to be more hype than information and analysis. Though I don't often read magazines, I do pick them up and check things out based on what I see on the cover if something catches my attention--this wouldn't be one of them.
  21. wehireu
It is classic propaganda. Eventually, we will need soldiers and engineers for massive civil works projects to deal with rising sea levels. Do you think
that civilians will build massive sea walls for San Francisco and New York.
    1. MadameX
Considering that we're contracting out military operations to civilian corporations, it would be rather ironic if we decided we needed soldiers for domestic construction projects.

"Sensing a lack of concern over global warming?"

    thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/21/failing-to-deliver-a-jolt-on-global-wa...

    The story continues...
  23. SinSecret
I can understand how it could be considered offensive, but I personally don't take it to be so. It's just harsh using such a weighted image.
  24. roastfrog
I would say that what is more eye-catching than the image itself is the cover's green border-- makes a symbolic change from Time's iconic red.
  25. AmmoBob
IMHO, the picture does nothing for the cause of global warming. It was used to create a "buzz" in efforts to increase the sales. Just like some of the idiots they put on the cover for "Person of the Year"
  26. lamenews
    that's not my kinda "hot"
  27. jonesre
If you want to buy into the whole human affected global warming hoax, go right ahead. video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4302904746669786959

But do not demean my Marine Corps by trying to force them into your social petri-dish of socialist wet dreams; or portraying them doing a job that would be better done by some sophomoric, pseudo-intellectual academic coward.

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." - George Orwell

Marines exist to break things and kill people.
  28. barryfromtexas
I cam here for another kind of "hot"

    Boy was I disappointed
  29. jsinkeywest
Man will be long gone before Global warming catches up to him
Time should be ashamed of themselves
