I have I think an amount of common sense, as I am sure many do and I like to keep well informed re health, safety etc but give us a break, where will the Nanny State end? What to drink, what to eat, how to live. It's our lives after all.

Sometimes I wonder if there is a helpline for how to cross the road...

What's a Nanny State? You mean where the government has too many rules or something?
  4. offendedblogger
Yes and no. I live in Idaho and it is not nearly as bad as most states.
  5. RTBjr73
Well, I live close to the Bible belt, does that count?

      @RTBjr73
Well, I'm saving my scorn and my desire to belt them one upside the head with their paper pope for the "offended thread".
    2. RTBjr73
Now timethief , I know that you are much too educated and smart to hold a grudge like that....remember to follow through when you belt them.
    3. offendedblogger
Both extremes, left and right, want to control us, though. They just have different agendas.

I'm sooo with you on this. Unfortunately, it would seems there are a bunch of fanboys and fangirls out there, who fail to live up to their responsibilities to take care of themselves and, who are lacking in common sense and, they keep asking for yet another government tit to be added so they can suck it dry.
    1. myriadlife
Timethief, you are so graphically and perfectly descriptive. Exactly what I wanted to say.
    2. DrowseyMonkey
Give me an example, I'm confused.
    3. timethief
I'm on a freaking roll today and I'm not even pms-y. w00t! Let 'er roll.

My parents used to have a more curt saying that goes along the same line as TT's..

Shut your dumbass up, and get a job!!!!!

The sad thing is, it often seems like it's the general public majority trying to control everything, not the government. Things like healthy foods and all...why? If people want to eat junk, let them.

People need to stop micromanaging the lives of others, they need to get over themselves.
    1. timethief
There are even those who support government bureaucrats micromanaging which class of consenting adults ought to be able to secure a freaking marriage license.

Is the nanny cute and sexy, and does she wear a nice outfit and say things like "You've been a naughty boy and need to be spanked, and then..."

    Have I gone too far?
    1. Manictastic
You were getting near the limit, but you did succeed in making a Nanny State sound sexy. Now I want one
    2. DrowseyMonkey
LOL ... I'm still waiting for an example ... no one's given me one yet. But I have to say that's what I thought of when I heard that term.
    3. mattclark
Mmmmm, then the next time she could be a French maid, or maybe a school teacher with a cane, mmmmmmmm

Edit: Hey Drowsey, wanna play dress up?
    4. offendedblogger
If only it were that way, more people might fall in line.

Here in Idaho you are free to do many things that you aren't in other states.

You can home school your children without having to register with or answer to the state, ride a motorcycle without a helmet and spank your unruly child, among other things.
    5. DrowseyMonkey
ah, well. I think it's good to have rules to protect children, I don't consider that to be intrusive.

Matt ... lol, maybe next time
    6. offendedblogger
True, and our law here is clear that you can't beat your child. But you can spank them.
    7. mattclark
Oooh Drowsey you're giving me shiveries just thinking... Aw well, maybe in another life heh

Please explain what a Nanny State is, as I still am unclear. Thank you very much
    1. mattclark
Well here in Europe it used to mean that the state would provide for from the cradle to the grave. In other words from the moment a person was born there would be a safety net to make sure you were fed, had your health, an education etc. In practice it just meant the rich were taxed a higher rate so that the government coulf provide a basic level of care to everyone. It was supposed to eliminate poverty and make sure everyone had equal rights to to make a go of life.

Unfortunately it didn't really work out that way and the system was too easy to abuse by people who didn't want to work, or go to school that sort of thing. However, the ideal is still awesome and if we could make it work it would be fantastic. Sadly, its as bad as capitalism, someone always suffers, and someone always abuses the system.

I live in a Nanny Country.

(A Nanny State/Country is when your government thinks you're incapable of making decisions for your own life, and decides to make those decisions for you)
    1. Theresa111
I reside in Maryland. Is this a Nanny State?
    2. offendedblogger
Are you happy living like this?
    3. Daudleikr
I have no idea Theresa, I'm not familiar with American laws.

      @offended
There are some things I would like to change, I would like to be able to see our government trust the population enough to let us make our own decisions (and mistakes).
For example; Red Bull is illegal here, because it contains too much caffeine and the substance taurine.
It's considered a drug, so you can purchase it in Sweden for "own use" (max 1 per day), but you can't sell or buy it in Norway.
      Wtf.
That's a small issue though, but it gives a good impression of what kind of a Nanny Country this is.
    4. offendedblogger
      @ Daud ~ I agree, WTF?!!

I know that Norway is rated as one of the top places to live, and I am sure it is lovely there but things like this Red Bull(sh*t) law make me cringe. I guess I am just a rebel. I'd probably be importing Red Bull and selling it to my neighbors.
    5. Manictastic
WOWY, that's intrusive. But I'd be for it coz Red Bull stinks and tastes awful. I was like on a train the otherday and all these kids were walking around with Red Bull (I think they got it for free or something) and geesh did it stink in the train. Luckily you get used to odours after a while.

In our State it is yes and no. Texas. Like teachers cannot touch students - yet the law is still on the books that you can use whatever force is necessary to maintain discipline - short of deadly force. - Go figure. Of course seems like everyone has seat-belt laws, etc.
  12. RenalFailure
I don't live in a Nanny state. I do live in a Creepy Uncle State though. One tip: if he asks you to reach in his pocket to get his special roll of dimes, go find an adult immediately.
  13. focusorganic
I think this qualifies... A couple practically down the street from me aren't allowed to live together because they aren't married.
  14. app2usadvisor
I think the Nanny State refers to a authoratarian country, Texas, Idaho won't qualify :-)
