So last night I was browsing around online looking for different housing rentals, and some came with Google map information. Google maps have the street view which was cool, I could see the potential neighborhood I wanted to move to. That is until I found this:

Isn't that just a bit freaky? I mean camera's are everywhere these days, but sheesh. Now I'm wondering what other unsuspecting people caught on Google maps are thinking about it all..

I blogged about it here: chica-x.blogspot.com/2008/06/google-maps-caught-me.html Not much else to add, except I found the suspected vehicle, and found an article on Wiki about Google Cars, it's actually a pretty interesting deal.

It's creepy. Big Brother has been watching us from some time now.

I hear there is a huge uproar over it. They have stills of kids out playing in the front yard, plate numbers on cars.....yeah, a lot of peopel are not happy. My neighbor, who is a freak about his yard, hit the roof. The day the camera drove by he was cleaning out his garage, so his yard is trashed, junk all over it.....

The reason that Google maps are so popular is that few people are concerned about Big Brother watching us from the satellites and soon, if not already, from space stations is clear -- it's self interest and novelty. Those with businesses want them to be displayed on maps and very few will actually question what other information is being collected, what purposes it's currently being or could be used for. And, we also have a penchant for being delighted with novel inventions that are made accessible to the common man and woman.

IMO it's been very easy for the "average joe" to accept and embrace the horrifying scenario laid out in 1984 and the Big Brotherism that's evidenced today, without noticing the parallel between the two. The presentation of the usefulness to the "consumer" has made the conquest of privacy happen without some much as a ripple.

Witness the amount of personal information that's cached by Google from online communication and marry that with the mapping and there's no other logical conclusion that can be reached. The Google corporation is Big Brother and Big Brother knows all that we willingly provide on forums such as these when we exchange our birthright to privacy for a mess of potage.

BTW I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I don't believe there is a master mind behind this only a business mind. I believe that Google is acting just as any corporation would do to grow and to profit their shareholders.

My street is not google mapped, but that doesn't mean I haven't been caught elsewhere!

haha so true, I searched every address I could have possibly been at around my town, and that was the only pic that I found of me. There were other people I saw, but all strangers.

I like street view and have posted some of the interesting stories about it. I felt lucky when I found they had come down my little out the way circle. Hey, it an OK picture of the street and nobody is naked in the front yard or anything.

Now if they put a live webcam on my street that would be creepy.

There have been lawsuits over Google street view. Some people caught on it are in "less than desirable" situations like leaving porn shops, peeing in the street, etc.
