Well the NCAA football season has officially begun with the absolute shellacking of Mississippi State at the hands of Les "potato head" Miles and the LSU Tigers. A 45 to 0 take em behind the wood shed game. My Oklahoma State Cowboys play the Georgia Bulldogs at 5:45pm tomorrow night. So let's hope we don't get abused and embarrassed. Zero U ( that's OU if you didn't know ) plays North Texas Junior High at 6:00pm. Who does your favorite team play and aren't you glad it's finally football season.

I'm not sure if this makes me un-American, unmanly, or both, but I have never been able to get into football, unless you're talking a live college game. Too much stopping and starting, and I've never learned to appreciate what goes on on the field. I have much more fun watching soccer, mainly because it never stops, and it takes ages even to make a single point. Much more drama and pathos in soccer. But I'll shut up and quit dissing football. If I had gone to a school with a decent team, things might have turned out differently.

      Say it isn't so!

I love football. The only good thing about the end of summer is the beginning of football season. Tonight, it was a high school (we won!) and tomorrow, college.

I've already taken my three Terrible Towels from my dresser and laid them out in preparation for the NFL season. I'm ready.

I am also a big fan of soccer. I started playing when I was 12. After 3 knee surgeries and my wife threatening to kill me I was forced to stop 5 years ago. I still watch the premiership and the mls every chance I get. Michelle Acres is my hero. My high school team had the honor of being in sports illustrated as the 1st team to lose to Northwest Classen in 50 games. So I can understand your line of reasoning.

So who's your team or teams. With the towels I am guessing your a steelers fan.

      Since the 70s.

Back then, my poor dad lived in a house of women: my mom, my two sisters, his sister, me. The only control the poor guy had was during football season. He got to watch his games on our one b&w tv. We could choose to watch or find something else to do. I chose to watch, but only with one eye. Until.....

Lynn Swann. The man took my breath away. I'd never seen a human fly until I watched him. I don't care that Stallworth's stats were better, Swann was the best. He had something that couldn't be measured with numbers. Dazzle. Flair.

My original Terrible Towel is real terry cloth, not the velour ones they sell now. I cherish it.

Why is football called soccer and an offshoot from rugby called football??

I must mirror stoneman's feelings in that I find American Football too static. That could be because I never really understood the game, possibly!

I imagine people from anywhere other than the USA wonder the same thing as you. We call football soccer because we already used the name. Soccer ( or football ) is new to us and still not well excepted. We want a sport that has a high score and lots of contact. I think soccer takes more skill and toughness but you wouldn't convince most americans of that.

I think David Beckham (as much as I hate him) has gone a long way to make football more famous, he has made it more famous than when pele was there plying his skills

Yes that is true. Beckham is out for 6 weeks from a knee injury he suffered in a game a night or two ago. I used to like him being a big Man U fan and all but now he plays for LA which I don't like. So it doesn't bother me at all that he is out for awhile.

Australian rules football is a real confusing thing to watch. I've seen it on our local international tv station, and I don't get it. Is it soccer? Is it American football? Something else? Very fast moving, in any case.
