Everyone will have noticed that gas prices have become a little bit expensive over the previous years. I was wandering over at the NY Times today and I found this article(www.nytimes.com/2008/05/10/business/10transit.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp&adx...) about the increase of use in the public transportation sector.

I was wondering whether or not some of you BlogCatalogers have started taking the bus, or metro, or started carpooling to avoid paying that extra buck(s) at the gas station.
And let's make this into a really good discussion about public transportation in general. Do you feel there is enough of it in your neighbourhood? Do you think the government should subsidise it?

I use my car to get the groceries and go places in my neighborhood and take the bus/train to work and other places. Trying to bring a car into Manhattan is a nightmare.

The trains/buses have become a lot more crowded and a lot ruder recently. I rather like subways, trains, and light rail. I am not very fond of buses.

I wish I could take a bullet train across country from New York to San Francisco or Seattle.

Sadly, there is no public transportation close enough to my subdivision. I would if I could. We live miles from the nearest bus stop - Nards

In the last week, gas prices have gone above and beyond 0_o. Lats week it was $3.75 for regular, and $3.95 for high test. this week? $3.95 for regular, and over $4 for high test!

    Holy crap!

Our city has jack for public transportation. We do have buses, but they never run on time, only got to a few places, and only run until early in the evening, and barely at all on weekends. They are very unreliable.

What I have been doing is simply not driving if I don't have to. I got a nifty seat for my kid, for my bike - and I use it. We walk, if we can. If we can't (as some places here are just unreasonably far away) I try to make one cohesive loop, so I don't waste time or gas, and I do everything in one shot.

I'm also hoping that a small, locally owned grocery store will open up on our block (I'm working on the owners about this one ). It would cut my driving time down even more...

My husband, unfortunately, has to drive 5 days a week, but he does pick up others on his way to work.

Yep. In fact, I got a new one for Mother's day, and it came with a cute little baby even.

      A horse, not a cowboy I mean.

The prices to ride here would cost us more than using the car. We rarely go out without 2 or 3 of us.

Can anyone tell me what volumes Anok is talking about for the prices quoted above? Gallons? Litres? Here in Australia it's $1.45 (US AND OZ dollars) a litre for unleaded but in Britain you can double that to $2.90 (US AND OZ Dollars)

    Ben
