    I just read that too.

It's not surprising considering that he was a liberal Republican to begin with.

I like Specter, generally. I would have voted for him in '96, if he had made it to the general election. Same with McCain in 2000, Dean in '04, Richardson in '08. Maybe my liking a candidate kills their campaign

Norm Coleman will never let Al Franken win in court. It will drag out forever. I bet both sides in Minnesota will now get a huge injection of cash into their war chests.

I live in MN and folks here are getting really cranky. I thought Normy was a weasel before, but even folks who used to like him are getting fed up with the court challenges. If he drags it out much longer, there will be a size-able backlash against the Republican party here. Even more than what was already building.

This is great! Frankin is expected to be seated soon, which will give the democrats a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate! Finally, the right-wing extremists have lost all power!
    1. Stillthinking
Shhh. If we say it out loud, it won't happen. Actually, I kind of don't want it to happen. AS liberal as I may be, I still believe in balance of power.

don't forget about those Blue Dogs that have always been further right than Specter. I don't think it effects anything. Much as I like the guy, he strikes me as a bit of a self-promoter (see also Steriods; Baseball Scandal) It's a publicity/election stunt.
  4. NatetheGrate
Yeah, yeah, filibuster-proof majority, blah blah. I still think it's weird.

    YAY!

    That is all!

I don't trust his motives. But then again, I am a curmudgeon.

    Woo-hoo!

I'm probably gonna vote against him in the Democratic primary next year, but for now...Arlen's the man....
  8. davedol
Will the right consider becoming more moderate, or will they lurch further rightwing? I think they will embrace their inner craziness and pretty much fall off the cliff with their ideology. Actually, they already have fallen off the cliff. They just haven't landed on the rocks below just yet.

Well at least the twits who vote Republican won't be able to ask him to close down homeless shelters & soup kitchens, veto funding for child education, or stop funding for drug addiction in poor areas anymore.
    1. Stillthinking
Now, now. Not all Republicans hate poor people and children.
    2. othellobloke
I'm sorry... I wasn't aware that there are Republicans that actually care about people who aren't mega-rich.
    3. Stillthinking
It just appears that way at times, after all, they aren't going to vote against their own interests and it is in their interest to keep the poor, poor.
    4. Anok
Oh, Oh, there are plenty who hate the poor. I just wrote looong post about how the stimulus rejecting republicans in Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida have resurrected the Debtor's prisons, and have been detaining poor people indefinitely while using them to create revenue. (And Michigan too, but they are accepting stimulus money).
    5. Stillthinking
Trust the Republicans to resurrect debtor's prisons. Lovely. Especially when the poor in those states tend to be overwhelmingly black or Hispanic.
    6. Anok
oh yeah, and Mississippi has even (essentially) removed the right to a court appointed attorney for many of their new debtor criminals.

      Seriously.

The ACLU and the SCHR is all over this right now, and have gotten two women out of jail so far, but are working on getting proper legal representation for the 300 people currently jailed without ever having had legal counsel.

I started reading the reports, and I had to get up to vomit about half way through.

      Seriously.
    7. Stillthinking
Texas can take Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida with them when they secede. Be gone with the Deep Red States!
