Art and Museum Exhibitions Online - anyone?

What do you think about art & museum exhibitions online?

Considering the work of such institutions as the Streaming Museum, what do you think those types of exhibits do for us when viewed on a cell phone or on a computer?

Surely, it's not the same as being in a public place and having a "being there" experience, but there must be something that gets triggered by cyberspace exhibitions.

What are your thoughts?

Nothing compares to being in the actual museum exhibit BUT for those who cannot make it, an online exhibit exposes the viewer to new ideas.To me there is value in that even if it changes the dynamics and context. However if an exhibit is made for the purpose of being viewed online and on a cell phone then I feel technology is part of the exhibit.

It is an interesting idea for people to check out museums when there is no possibility of being there, however, like both of you said, it is no replacement for the real thing. A big reason people go to museums are to see the pieces in the flesh. It suddenly becomes tangible, and the reality of its existence becomes clearer and relevant upon viewing. On top of that, it is a great way to get out with friends into a different environment away from home. I guess it really depends on what you hope to get out of an exhibit. To me, if I want to see video of either an art piece or historical artifact I can just watch the Discovery or History Channel. Museums are where they come to live. So in short, I think of cyber museums as something for people who can't make it there, or as a teaser or advertisement for people to get up and go there themselves.

It's probably better than nothing, a taster of what is on offer, although I fear many will rather avoid visiting works if the technology does not do the exhibition justice. However overall an way of expanding the arts audience is welcome.
