Three pigs at the Minnesota State Fair tested positive in late August for H1N1, the flu virus that is causing the current pandemic, the Agriculture Department reported Friday.

The department said the test results were preliminary and would not be confirmed for a few days. But if the results are confirmed, the pigs will be the first in this country found to harbor the virus. Infected pigs have been found in eight other countries.

Will you continue to eat pork products ?

How damaging do you think this news will be to the pork industry ?

YOU CAN NOT CATCH IT FROM THE MEAT!!!! It is from kissing, licking, rubbing on one and then touching your mouth or nose, or one of them sneezing on you. Yes it is bad for us pork people. It is not from the pigs per say to start with. Pigs have alot of characteristics of humans. They can catch things like we do. There was a farmer in Canada that gave it to his pigs. Pigs are not the problem. People are. The spread is caused by people. My pigs do not have pig parties and have pig guest over to spend the night. Someone from one farm had to take it to another farm. I worked in a chicken house and we had to walk in sanitized baths before entering one house that is to keep the spread of stuff down. Same thing for pig farmers. I dont let any one pet my pigs that has been around another animal. While I am at it my chickens are not to blame for the bird flu and nor my ducks.

OMG!!!!! It is the end of the world, I just knew it!!!

Actually, I will still fry my bacon nice and crispy and avoid being sneezed or coughed on by the masses as best I can.

Given the trend towards mega pig farms that contain thousands of pigs I wonder if there are any precautions that could protect the pigs from this virus ?
  9. NJFacePainter
Heh, if I tell my husband about this, he'll go buy a huge thing of bacon. He's contrary that way. Hm... maybe I *should* tell him.

I'm all about some pork. People continue to freak about the swine flu - it's no more deadly than the normal strains, it just spreads so much more easily that you hear about the deaths more frequently. I will continue to disinfect, avoid people who are not healthy or don't know how to wash their hands and fry my bacon. LOL
