I have come across some profiles where the avatars are women, yet, upon further probing, it seems they are men.

Does one think that women avatars get more responses?

Do you think it is deceptive if someone uses a female image if they are really male? and visa versa?

I find it confusing.

Okay I admit it, I am a man really.
    1. globalgirl
      I knew it
    2. crpitt
      Hey! LOL!
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
I thought you were the small child on the right.
    4. globalgirl
      child prodigy!
    5. crpitt
Thats a child I made pose with me to soften my image
    6. acousticguitarist
yeah but he looks like the tough one
    7. wandadog13
      I'm shocked!
  2. ghostytwofish
I find it silly, and cheesy. The avatar doesn't have to be YOU (mine isn't), but it shuld be reflective of something other than a sex-sells approach to marketing.
    1. globalgirl
I do too. In fact, it is a major turn off.
  3. ThriftShopRomantic
Ha... And I was thinking, "Good gad, why would I use THIS picture if it weren't me"... I'd post someone better if it were for marketing purposes!"
    1. globalgirl
      Celebrate your uniqueness! ;-)
    2. antibarbie
Me too, I was thinking the same thing!
  4. seanu
I admit my avatar is not me, but he is better looking than I am... so he stays.
    1. globalgirl
Pooches, especially your pooch, is acceptable (though he looks a bit tempermental!)
  5. crpitt
I was joking about being a man, I am not honest
I used my picture because I couldn't think of anything else that summed me up apart from a picture of me.

I find it a bit creepy when they use 'sexy' woman images.
    1. globalgirl
"I find it a bit creepy when they use 'sexy' woman images"

      My sentiments exactly.
    2. lisamcglaun
I love your picture..you look so happy.
    3. acousticguitarist
i think they should use it in commercials
  6. binh
Yes, me too, so confusing I decide to use my own photo.

I guess your avatar is some sort of hypnotizing, right? It work well because I feel attracted.
    1. globalgirl
      Now that made me laugh!

My avatar is my logo! :-) My picture can be found on my websites or StumbleUpon.
    2. iriegal
      binh..that is too funny...lol
    3. acousticguitarist
binh..i can't tell what is in your picture, i can see a hand...is it a crocodile as well?
    4. acousticguitarist
      ok...i can see it now
  7. butterflymedia
My own image, is actually my company logo. And, yes, it is confusing.

    blog.butterflymedia.ro/
    1. globalgirl
I really like your butterfly. Did you design it?
  8. butterflymedia
Yes, it was a process of 6 months to design my logo, and I am happy with it.

  9. brigid
    I just drew a picture.

Actually, that picture kinda is me. With bangs.
  10. globalgirl
Butterfly, I like your color choice and design; it looks like it took time to design.

Brigid, I am impressed! Do you do cartoon drawings for a living? You have talent! It reminds me of a character on Scooby Scooby Doo.

I put an avatar up because when I first joined here someone told me I would get more response if I didn't have one of those shadow pics. The ghost rider avatar was the only one I could find small enough, and I don't have a pic of me on my computer or I would probably use it.
Guess I should get one sorted out, the face on fire thing isn't really me.

    Tony:)
  12. globalgirl
Tony, I've been wondering about your avatar. It is catchy and innovative. To top this off, your ARE a man not trying to be a woman.

    Howdy Doody!
  13. Tonylewis
Well thankyou, that's settled then, I will remain "catchy and innovative", sounds better than the real me anyway, phew.

    Tony:)

My avatar is a female...and I am a female (jamaican).

I haven't thought of it much but interesting observation.
    1. globalgirl
Your avatar looks Jamaican! Are you from there? I've heard it is beautiful there.
  15. lisamcglaun
I like having my own picture. I don't really like the avatars of half dressed women..it makes me wonder what the blog owners real agenda is. It feels so fake. If people don't want to use their own pictures, that's fine, there are many reasons not to. If they choose something else, I like the ones that reflect the purpose of the blog or reveal something about the owners personality.
    1. globalgirl
Bingo. You know what I am talking about.
    1. globalgirl
      de donde ud?
  16. claudiorodval
I like to change mine once every few months... this is me in the morning when I dont drink my usual cup of coffee!
    1. globalgirl
Funny, I look the same way in the morning

I am me...but I look better in real life :-)
    1. globalgirl
Don't you mean an inspirational moment? I'm glad you are not a girl.
    2. acousticguitarist
      I'm glad as well
    3. globalgirl
well, you know, there are those who are, well, "confused"
  20. acousticguitarist
There's a few with bikini's - bikinitars - I think they are really at the beach and their boyfriends are blogging for them :-)
    1. globalgirl
      sneaky men!
  21. PetLvr
I wish I could remember who it was .. (if it's YOU reading this .. fess up!)

It's one thing to see pretty women thinking that's the way to get readers and boost traffic (look at ilker's Thinking Blog and how he did it) .. but the other day I saw a 'hunk' avatar and it was a female behind the picture.... what's up with that?
    1. globalgirl
Now, here me, if he is hunky, that is okay!

Do I hear reverse discrimination? Oops.
    2. PetLvr
okay.. I confess. it's me~ I'm the 'hunky guy' and really a girl behind the avatar.

Now .. let's talk about your feelings...
    3. globalgirl
      **Wink**
    4. legbamel
I saw that one this morning when I logged in - or at least I am assuming that the blogger did not pose on a beach in a tiny Speedo. While I can't imagine what that type of avatar has to do the being a successful blogger, it was refreshing to see a nearly-naked man for once. I find it very difficult to take seriously people who use members of the Swedish (or Thai) bikini team for their avatar. C'mon, have you ever heard of thinking outside the box? [rolls eyes]
  22. tikirob
It is not me but my cat.
    1. globalgirl
Here scary cat, here scary cat!
  23. daisythecurlycat
I am pretty sure it is my sexy avatar that draws people to visit my blog. And this is the real me!
    1. aqualightphoto
Are those your natural fur colors, or did you get then dyed for the picture? I bet thats makeup your wearing that makes you look so good too
    2. daisythecurlycat
Uh oh. Are my roots showing?
    3. globalgirl
You know, maybe daisy and tikirob need to hook up **wink wink**
  24. aqualightphoto
Personally I'd rather see art as the avatar, something that you made, photograph, digital, painting, drawing, etc

And pets are always cute too
  25. maccasenior
Different strokes for different folks, as long as good intentions are not far behind!
  26. WanNo
My avatar is me. Altered with adobe photoshop.. hhehe
  27. suburbqueen
I used to use a cartoon, but figured it was time to put my real face up...
  28. dotartdude
The avatar is my painting. Here is the photo that inspired me:

    bp1.blogger.com/_zPzveb_czZk/RZCTQpZpyyI/AAAAAAAAAcY/W4r-oudDwuU/s1600-h/Lo...

And the photo was taken at the Renaissance Arts Hotel in the New Orleans Arts District. The hotel has art throughout the lobby, restaurant and second level.

Your avatar DOES look like that fantastic rug! How cool.
  29. libdrone
I think using your own face gives you more credibility. There are lots of good reasons not to and I don't say everyone should but I think it's especially helpful if you are blogging seriously rather than strictly as a hobby. my .02 fwiw # include yadayadayada

  35. henrychiah

  36. shash
    thats the way Henry
  37. ichaduma
It's a vector illustration, if you're a fan of Hed Kandi, you'd know the illustrator for his CD covers, and you'd recognise this avatar instantly. But I'm pretty sure it can represent the Indonesianese facial profile as well. Brown skin, black hair, etc.
My real pictures on my Flickr (private), Friendster, and one on my About page.
  38. abhatnagar19
Its my pic in d avtar..but globalgirl..whats with the spirals?spirals equal to global?
