I just need to vent. Prerequisite classes are insipid, inane, and trivial.

Ah, yes... I remember those days. I had so many core classes I had to take that ended up not being terribly relevant to my interests.

I understand they're supposed to give you a wider perspective on things, but I know a lot of our core classes were kinda... made up. Stuff that was trendy in literary and cultural theory at the time, but didn't have a lot of actual credibility later.

What are you being forced to take against your will?

I listed them both in my rant. One, I'm taking right now (Intro to Chemistry). The other, my mom and a bunch of my friends are taking right now, and a couple of my friends took last semester.

Ack!Sorry 'bout that-- my brain for some reason wasn't connecting the link to being an actual post regarding the topic. I clearly need more coffee.

When I started college, a lot of folks didn't know anything about computers, so we all had to have some preliminary programming and usage classes. But it does seem strange nowadays to see you having to learn Office as a part of college.

Microsoft has too much damn political power.

    I can really relate.

I entered university 22 years after my high school graduation. I had to take a "placement exam" so they would know what level of classes to give me. I ended up in the honors program, based on my scores on the placement exam.

And so I ended up in the same English, French, algebra, and history classes I took in high school...I even had the same English text that I had in my junior year of high school!

The only classes I took in my first two years of university that presented me with new material was Wildlife Biology, Latin, and Psychology. Everything else was a repeat for me...but since they were prerequisites for upper division classes, I was forced to take them.

Just hang in there...it really does get better when you get to the upper division!

I know. I have my eye on the prize: A Doctorate.

      Not surprised one whit.

I think sometimes the colleges want us to be too rounded and we end up becoming a jack of all trades, master of none!

No, it's just a matter of squeezing more money out of poor college students.

Ha! We had prerequisites from different faculties. Same course. Same textbook. Same exam. Same lecturer. Different faculty, different course code. Guess what? Faculty A does not give credit for the same course if it has a course code from Faculty B.

At least some of my prerequisite courses had hot wimmins.

Well, at least you found a bright side for it.

But wow. I can only imagine your reaction when you found out you'd be taking the same class twice with different course codes.

Didn't happen to me, at least. My course was between about 5 different faculties and none of them had any clue what to do with us (it's a new field). You basically stated your course and they'd go oooh one of them, and stamped the forms without any questions.

The problem only came in when some of my friends changed their courses to that of a different faculty. Yet we all wrote the same exams and attended the same classes.
