Barack and Michelle Obama

I think this couple represent the best of what a really healthy relationship should be like between a man and a woman. As an African, I grew up seeing a lot of this and with respect to the issue of relationships between black men and black women in America, Michelle, a highly educated and accomplished black woman at that, has shown black women, more importantly, the importance of supporting their men so as to help them accomplish their goals. In return, Barack has paid back her undying love and support with his own, and immense adoration to boot. It is quite sad how badly American men have become emasculated in this society and I am hopeful that men and women can realize that in addition to marriage being a relationship of equals, it is also one where mutual respect and requisite deference are of the utmost importance.

Is this a discussion about race, or about relationships? or is it just about black relationships?

  That is what is unique about their relationship. It can delve into any sphere of public discourse. I for one think it is generally about the importance of a healthy marriage, but more importantly given the rather desperate state of the black family in America, they (the Obamas) present a ray of hope and a way forward, I would say.
