Barbie will soon be sporting a tattoo of Ken's name on her back. For the full story take a look at www.lemondrop.com/2009/03/05/barbie-gets-edgy-new-makeover/?icid=200100125x...
Would you purchase Barbie (with a tattoo) for your child? Why or Why not?

What's next? "Totally Pierced Barbie Girl" with piercing gun and simulated diamond studs for ears, nose, eyebrows, lips or belly button???

Oh dear me, nothing surprises me these day ! Will Ken be getting one too with Barbie's name on him? I will go read your link for more info
I don't have children, but I don't think it would overly bother me, I have a couple small tattoos that they would see on me anyway ;-)
I just hope they don't have her smoking a joint at some stage. hehe
Someone once said to me it would be funny if they made a bogan Barbie.(that might only be a word we use over here in Aussieland)? -
I just had a quick look, and I must admit it is rather cute. altho I think she should have left Ken off it IMO hehe

This is very wrong, children need to be discouraged from having lovers names tattooed on them. Maybe next year they'll feature Barbie after laser surgery to remove the tatoo after Ken goes off with Sindy!

I never was a barbie fan, even as a young girl. This makes me like her even less. We should be encouraging girls involvement in other 'sports' other than the opposite sex!

That's funny... but I wasn't really shocked. Crazy things happen these days and there's worse things out there then a doll with a tattoo.

I am not against tattoos and have seen some amazing ones but I don't think Mattel should bring tattoos into the mainstream culture of young children. I do let my daughter wear temporary ones every once in awhile to match an occasion or outfit but she's learning that they don't match everything and aren't always appropriate so being temporary is the way to go, not something permanant.

I agree with you. I grew up in a lifestyle that included branding cattle. I cannot fathom why any woman would want to have the name of any other person tatooed into her flesh. Nor can I fathom why any adult would approve of toys that foster that idea. -
I agree...I let my kids wear temporary tattoos, too, just for fun. And I let them get their faces painted at the fairs as well...
As far as Barbie goes, I had Barbies as a child. And I think that most kids playing with Barbies may not really grasp the entire Ken-Barbie relationship fully. I'm sure they understand the attraction but each girl's Barbie more or less is a mimickry of relationships they already are exposed to, even if it is just for play.
While I don't really think kids will care one way or another where Barbie has a tattoo, I do think that, we adults have the social responsibility of not sending the wrong message to our children. Like I said, a young girl's Barbie will mimic the world around the girl. I'm not saying that tattoos are wrong. But we should let them make that choice for themselves when they get older and have a better understanding of personal and public perception, especially when it comes to things that can cause stigma for someone who may be suffering from low self-esteem.

[sarcasm] In a society where 6 out of every 10 marriages don't even make it to the 10 year mark, hence, serial momgamy is the norm, of course, we should encourage youth to tatoo the names of all their partners on their backs. [/sarcasm]
I have several girlfriends who wish they had never been tatooed and pierced. All aging bodies experience skin stretching. The combination of bulging bellies, sagging breasts and butts, stretch marks, fat deposits and cellulite makes for some truly ugly beach viewing every summer. I'm so glad I didn't follow the sheeple on this one. -
I definitely would not. I don't encourage tattoos or piercing of any kind unless they are 18 years of age and out of my house...lol

I think we all forgot about the pregnant barbie that came out several years ago. Barbie Megan...I think.

That article made up the part about Ken's name on her back. It's not true at all.

I don't have a problem with Barbie having tattoos. It's better than feet that are permanently affixed into high heels or a completely unrealistic body shape. I really object to the use of the term "tramp stamp"; its offensive and sexist. I have a tattoo on my lower back, am I a "tramp"? What message does that send young girls that their sexuality is judged by what they put on their bodies, when there's no comparative term for men?-
ROTFL I thought the Ken part sounded a bit "out there", even for toys in these days of highly-sexualized children. A tattoo, in and of itself, I don't have a problem with although the first thing I'd do (had I a daughter) would be to explain that Barbie is well over 18 and thought long and hard about the design of said permanent marking. I dislike the term tramp stamp as well, as being pejorative and mean-spirited, although "ass antlers" actually makes me laugh. Mine it too high on my back to count as either of those, though.

I don't care about tattoos - in fact that would put Barbie into a realm that Punky understands better (as most of the family is well inked).
It's the tramp stamp that I don't like. I mean, can't she get a half sleeve instead? -
Like the Pregnant Midge doll, Mattel will probably produced these dolls for a while, only to pull them later. Yet, the new Tattoo Barbie (Totally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie & Totally Stylin' Tattoo Nikki) is said to be selling very well.
