I don't really drink much any more. The reason being that I developed an allergic reaction when I was younger due to overuse. What happened is that I developed the reaction of breaking out into an asshole--so these days, I mostly avoid it

But I am one helluva great bartender--was a professional bartender off and on during my music and acting:

I make a great mojito and here's my recipe. I learned this recipe from a Cuban bartender.

Ingredients

1 teaspoon powdered sugar (this is important because granulated sugar doesn't dissolve nearly as well. Or if you have simple syrup you can use that too).
Juice from 1 lime (2 ounces)
4 mint leaves
1 sprig of mint
white Rum (2 ounces)
2 ounces club soda
Splash of dark rum (optional)

Directions

In a fairly tall glass, take the mint leaves, sugar, and lime and mash (gently) against the bottom (a muddler works best).
Add crushed ice
Add white rum
Add club soda
Stir
Splash a float of dark rum on top (optional)
Garnish with mint sprig

Enjoy in moderation!

Very nice!...I'll have a mojito night with my buddies.

My signature drink is the vodka tonic, and sometimes i'll add a splash of cranberry to it for a change
    1. melindaville
Cranberry and vodka go great together. Vodka was actually my drink of choice for many years.
    2. stellak
I also like vodka & grapefruit with a splash of cranberry, its a nice summer drink. I try to stay away from the excesively sweet drinks. However I do make a killer piña colada
    3. melindaville
Ooooooh, I love pina colladas! They are really sweet though. I could only ever drink one. I get a headache from sweet drinks.
  2. tcinvestor
Yea, Mojito's. Back in South Fla..they were a real hit. I of course would share in their support. Great for summer. Actually, today I will take a Ciroc vodka & club soda tall with a splash of fresh grapefruit juice.
    1. melindaville
Fresh grapefruit juice rocks! My drink that I used to get almost all my nutrition from was vodka and grapefruit juice. I loved those.

And in FL--they do make marvelous mojitos--due to the great Cuban population.
    2. tcinvestor
Oh yea..the best Mojito's I have ever found are down there. If anybody heads down there. Go to Delray Beach. Forget South Beach. Check out a place called Cabana on the strip - Atlantic Ave. The whole ave. is a smorgasbord of fun & good times.
    3. melindaville
We'll be in Florida in October--I'll check it out. We plan to spend a few days in Miami and then we are heading to Key West.

    Fun Juice

    ingredients
1 gallon hawaiian punch (your flavor)
Handle of vodka (the cheaper the better)

    Directions

Pour/drink the punch until there is room for the entire bottle of vodka. Pour vodka into bottle. Shake, drink, enjoy.

WARNING, you will not taste any alcohol
WARNING, this will make you do stupid things
WARNING, if you can't handle being the life of the party, avoid this
    WARNING, you have been warned
    1. melindaville
I believe I have had this recipe *many* times--and it is true--it doesn't taste like alcohol--you can literally throw it down (and then you might GET thrown down).
  4. Floormodel
I'm not a drinker, makes me too sleepy. but if I do partake all I have is a vodka and tonic with lime or a sunny v, vodka and Sunny D
    1. melindaville
I would have never thought of Sunny D in an alcoholic drink! I always think of my little nephews and nieces with that!
    2. Floormodel
that's how I ended up with it. I bought the gallon jugs of it for my kids and had no tonic one night so I improvised. It's very tasty, almost too tasty.
    3. melindaville
I bet--it probably tastes like juice--easy going down--too easy perhaps.
  5. Jeunelle
I only drink wine in moderation but when I fix a drink it is a sex on the beach, a cosmpolitan, a mia tia or a rum n coke. I can't handle all that sugar it makes me go crazy.

I love sex on the beach. Literally and the drink!

The only thing I ever drink today is wine--and that's like a glass with dinner every once in a while. My husband is a true wine connoisseur--he even has a wine cellar. He collects wine from all over the world.
    2. Jeunelle
I have a wine cellar in my basement which I keep locked.
I save the cheap stuff for my family because the last time they stole my keys when I was sleeping and drank up most of my wine in the cellar. If you ever want to see me go Wolverine on you, just drink up my wine, they called the police for me, I was mad as hell. That's right, they called the PO PO on me in my house. lmao
    3. melindaville
Wow--that sucks that they drank your good wine! My hubby would totally go ballistic if someone did that to us.

We have a summer house in Maine and we loaned it out to some friends last summer. They literally drank the entire liquor cabinet. And didn't replace it. Needless to say, they won't be invited back anytime soon.
    4. Jeunelle
Exactly you hit the nail on the head, they don't replace anything. They come over only to search and destroy. They always come empty handed and NEVER bring anything like a bottle of wine over if I invite them over to dinner and then they call the PO PO on me in my house. That's when I go Spider Monkey on their ass.
    5. melindaville
I really can't blame you. You know what they say--you cannot choose your relatives (GOD, why not???).
  6. crpitt
I am usually the designated bartender at parties, which ridiculous because I just pretend to know what I am doing

    I love Mojitos.

Favourite is probably a Woo Woo or Cosmopolitan

or anything that is not whisky or ouzo.
    1. melindaville
What a Woo Woo? Never heard of it!

Mojitos are really good, I agree. Very refreshing in summer.
    1. melindaville
Ah, sex on the beach minus the OJ. Thank you for allowing me to be lazy and not Google.
  7. aningeniousname
I'll have anything just make sure it's served in a bucket.
    1. melindaville
Of course! How else could you possibly drink it, anin!
  8. Rainhat
I drink booze very rarely, but when I do I enjoy a good single malt scotch. Lagavulin and Laphroaig are my favourites. A good vodka can also be nice, served with a piece of coarse rye bread and pickles.
    1. melindaville
A man after my husband's heart. He loves single malt scotch and his very fave is Laphroaig. I can't stand that stuff--too smoky!
  9. dbowles1017
    5 hour shot

    Ingredients
1 bottle of 5 hour energy shot extreme
    Vodka, or other liquor
    (4) double shot glass

    Directions
Line up the four shot glasses.
Pour 1/4 of the 5 hour energy shot in each glass. Fill rest with liquor. You can either take all 4 shots yourself (recommended) or share with a friend.

*Note, when taking all 4, you must slam all 4 in quick progression or else you will not complete it, as it tastes like absolute s**t
    1. melindaville
OMG. I don't think I could stand up if I took all four shots.

That actually sounds very disgusting, DB!
    2. dbowles1017
It's the worst thing I have ever tasted.
    3. melindaville
I can imagine. I used to drink things like that when I was younger and the only purpose was getting as wasted as possible as quickly as possible.
    4. tcinvestor
Aaagh...reminds me of a few nights with Jagger Bombs.
      or Jagger and Red Bull
    5. dbowles1017
Like Jagger bombs, but the 5 hour extreme shot is waaay more potent than redbull.

melinda- that's what drinking is for.
    6. tcinvestor
Oh..for that really wide awake drunk stint.
    7. melindaville
I'm too old for that crap anymore, db.

    8. dbowles1017
      tc- I like to party

melinda- I am too, that's why i need the energy drinks
    9. melindaville
Back in the dark ages, when I was in my 20's--there were no energy drinks. But we DID have Irish coffee--which I did quite often.
  10. dbowles1017
Caribou Lou (as made famous by Tech Nine)

    Ingredients
    Malibu Rum
    Bacardi 151
    Pineapple juice

    Directions,

2 part 151, 1 part Rum, 5-6 part pineapple juice depending on your preference.
    1. melindaville
You like some strong ass drinks, db!
    2. dbowles1017
I don't think they are strong. Granted I usually drink around a 750 of alcohol when I drink.
  11. Anok
I've quit the stuff almost altogether for health reasons - but I do so enjoy a tall Guinness, or for a mixed drink, a bloody Mary or scotch/whiskey and water on the rocks.

My favorite mixed drink ever to make, though, was a pink squirrel

    Oh, and a smurfette.
    1. melindaville
OMG--havn't heard of a pink squirrel forever--but man it looked like pepto bismol--yuck!

I make the *best* bloody mary you ever tasted--seriously. Never cared too much for Guiness. I was much more of an Anchor Steam gal.
    2. Anok
Mmm bloody mary...I'll even take it virgin - extra lime and salt the rim!
    3. melindaville
Salt on the rim is a must. Plus (imo) you need to also use some freshly ground horseradish--this is a very important ingredient.

I personally use salt AND pepper on the rim.
  12. exit2013
I love wine coolers, is that so wrong?
    1. dbowles1017
      are you a male?
    2. exit2013
Yes i'm male! Is that so wrong?
    3. Shiley
That's about all I do too as well as my hubby.
    4. tcinvestor
When we were teens we would cross state lines to get what we needed to make a Purple People Eater.
    5. dbowles1017
Yes. Males do not drink wine coolers.
    6. melindaville
A man who can drink a wine cooler is a man who is VERY comfortable with his masculinity--and I like that.
    7. tcinvestor
Wine coolers remind me of Zima. We drank that back in the early 90's.
    8. Shiley
My Hubby does and he is very comfortable with himself.
    9. exit2013
      @melindaville,
      Thank you!

    Amerita Sour, or

Yes sorry, I spelled it wrong
  14. Shiley
    Milk
    Hershey's Baking Chocolate
    1-2 tsp vanilla extract
    some sugar

Heat milk and mix. I don't do alcoholic beverages for the most part.
    1. melindaville
Me either, Shirley. Except for great and rare occasions.

But the bar's open for everyone else!
  15. celticmusicfan
    I love mudslide yum...
    1. melindaville
      I had a mudslide weekend in N'awlins once . . . don't remember much about it. LOL!
    2. tcinvestor
Slid right over the top of you did it? ;-)
    3. melindaville
onto the floor was more like it I think!
  16. LisaNYC
    Shirley Temple?
    1. melindaville
      With vodka?
  17. LisaNYC
    Ginger ale?
    1. melindaville
      With vodka?
  18. LisaNYC
I don't mean to be demanding, but I'd prefer it if your bartender doesn't stray from the classic Shirley Temple recipe:

    3 oz lemon-lime soda
    3 oz ginger ale
    1 dash grenadine
    maraschino cherry for garnish

Pour the lemon-lime soda and ginger ale into a collins glass with ice cubes.
    Add a dash of grenadine.
    Stir.
    Garnish with the cherry

    Thanks in advance!!
    1. melindaville
      Done!

****adding splash of vodka while LisaNYC is not looking***
  19. dbowles1017
    Oh here's another good one

    Ninja Turtle

Ingredients (may not be accurate, I haven't made this in awhile)
    Blue Curacao
    OJ
    Gin

    How to
.5 oz Curacao, 1.5 oz gin, top of with OJ and or ice. I found this to be weak. The finished product should be a light green not a dark green.
    1. melindaville
I can't get a sense of what that actually tastes like. Is it really sweet? Really sweet drinks give me headaches (I haven't had a hard alcohol drink in over 15 years--and I have probably had less than 10 drinks in the last 15 years--seriously).
    2. dbowles1017
Uhh, it is a little sweeter than OJ.
  20. cathy13
WOW this got a lot of hits quickly!!!!!!

    I don't drink alcohol

But I love a virgin anything!

    (don't say it DB)
    1. melindaville
I don't drink anymore myself. But I still love bartending. I'll make you a killah virgin mojito!
    2. cathy13
I find it difficult being around people who have imbibed too much!
I tend to leave partys early because of that.
    3. dbowles1017
I just get loud. And I tend to talk a lot.
    4. melindaville
Oh, I so agree Cathy. I cannot stand being around people who are drunk. I don't really know anyone who gets drunk, though. Almost all my old friends are in recovery, like me--so they don't drink or rarely drink.
  21. Shuttercraft
Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large slice of lemon-peel.

    "Its Bond, James Bond"
    1. melindaville
I love learning new recipes--and that's definitely a new one for me, Shutter. Thank you!
    2. Shuttercraft
      That is OO7's drink.
  22. nothingprofound
I'm an old health-faddist bore. Straight water from the tap for me.
    1. melindaville
That's the best, my friend! And that's actually my favorite drink of all (these days anyway!).

But I do love making mixed drinks. For other people.
    2. tcinvestor
I hope that is filtered water if you live in the states.
    3. melindaville
Oh, definitely tc--we have a filter on both the kitchen and bathroom faucets.
  23. Chucklington
    Vodka and coke, pah-leez!
    1. melindaville
Coming right up! Squeeze of lime, I presume?
    2. melindaville
You say gross after posting the energy drink one? lmao!
    3. dbowles1017
      But that's a shot!
    4. melindaville
      So? Still gross!

Although I have to agree--I would *never* personally be able to gag down a drink that had vodka and coke. That's just wrong. But to each his own!
    5. dbowles1017
shots are supposed to be nasty. It's a test of grit.
    6. melindaville
I like jello shots! No nasty shots! I'm a girl!
    7. dbowles1017
Then you aren't making them strong enough!
    8. melindaville
I told you, my drinking days are OVAH! If you make the jello shots too strong, they don't jell up right!
  24. faithsju243
I pretty much can pour vodka in every thing except hot beverages and diary products. My absolute favorite is vodka with a place of pineapple and mango juice....very light on the splash.
    1. melindaville
Mnnnnnn, Faith--I love Mango juice and that sounds like a great summer drink. Kind of like a modified Planters Punch!
  25. geekchick
A bacon vodka martini with three bleu-cheese-stuffed olives.
    1. dbowles1017
      Mmm bacon
    2. melindaville
Wow. Now that's something you don't hear asked for every day?

Tell me how you do the bacon (this sounds really disgusting to me). Do you put the bacon in the martini and let it get all soggy?

Now, I am totally with you on the blue cheese stuffed olives. My perfect martini involves:

      Bombay Saphire Gin
      Stirred NEVER shaken
      Straight up
A little dirty (just like me)
with three blue cheese stuffed olives.

I actually miss martinis sometimes. I haven't had one of those for over 15 years.
    3. Rainhat
      @Melinda

The Bakon vodka is actually a brand of its own. Bacon flavored vodka, ugh... Check it out: bakonvodka.com.

I just love my Jack/Coke and Rum/Coke. I need to be more adventurous and try out some new mixed drinks.

  28. cathy13
Think I will have a rye and ginger now please!
    1. melindaville
We're actually driving Cathy to drink here!
    2. cathy13
      YUP!
21 years sober and you guys finally cracked me!
    3. melindaville
      LOL.

Actually--seriously, congrats! That's wonderful. Me = 15 years clean from heroin. In January.

    1. Anok
      What, no buttery nipples?
    2. dbowles1017
Why would I want buttery nipples? That's just sick.
  32. timethief
    @melinda
Ummm ... I've never been much of a non-drinker but I just read the iphone thread. OMG! Please pour me a double scotch on the rocks. Then someone, anyone, please pass me a Player's extra light, because I'm ready to start up smoking again again after reading that TRIPE! that was posted into that thread.
    1. melindaville
I hear you TT! I'm even driven to drink--and I never drink anymore! That thread made me want a scotch and a cig also!
  33. cindygeenotes
This is a great Mojito recipe, Melinda. What's your formula for simple sugar? I will be shaking these up in the cocktail hour (coming up here in the west) and using some fresh mint I just picked in the yard. My guest from Miami (who is married to a Cuban) is going to love this....

Meanwhile, something to pick up and cool down. Chilled cafe kahlua latte. Chill espresso. Pour a shot over ice. Add in cold milk and a shot of Kahlua. Garnish with a chocolate mint stirstick...Yum.

Now I will go check the other discussion that threatens to drive timethief to drink.
    1. melindaville
Oh that's a great chilled coffee with a zip recipe. I always use equal parts of sugar and water (1 cup usually), and then in a small saucepan, I bring the sugar and water to a boil, then simmer it until the sugar is completely dissolved--about 3 minutes.

Then, I let it cool completely naturally (don't refrigerate it warm, even). It works very well with the mojitos--but if you don't have simple syrup, the powdered sugar works very well.
  34. Rory
Nice recipe. Mojito's seem to be in at the moment. I, on the other hand, am a single malt guy ... but if I'm mixing, it's a simple vodka and orange juice.

Sorry that not all that creative.
    1. Rory
Course, I average MAYBE 1 drink per month. I'm not a big drinker and Cathy doesn't drink at all.
    2. melindaville
Yeah--I don't drink either. I used to be a bartender and I still like mixing drinks for my friends.
  35. devilsfan
During the summer, I like either a Partida Perfect margarita:
    21/4 oz. Partida Plata tequila
    3oz pure agave nectar
    squeeze 2 limes wedges
shake over ice and strain. AHHhhhhh!!

    OR

Muddle orange slices in a pint glass filled with ice
    23/4 oz Bacardi "O"
    Top off with sprite.
can add a little red bull to give it a "charge", but good either way!! Tastes a bit like and orange tic-tac
    1. melindaville
Wow! Both of those sound pretty interesting!
  36. cathy13
    I'll have what he's having!
  37. tcinvestor
Van Gogh Pomegranate & club soda, Tall. Thank you very kindly.
    1. melindaville
I never heard of Van Gogh Pomegranate--but I love Van Gogh and Pomegranates--so it must be good! Comin' right up, TC!
  38. Stillthinking
Last night,I had three Blueberry Stolis with lemon and Sour mix. It was summery and oh so good.
    1. melindaville
Good for you, Still! I'm glad you had a good time.
  39. sisterofmercy
Vodka and Red Bull is amazing.
    1. melindaville
Yikes! That's all I have to say. And Gross!
    2. dbowles1017
      Want to be friends?

Except replace red bull with monster or something that doesn't taste horrible.
  40. dbowles1017
Since I'm (apparently) the only cool person in here (read, drinks massive quantities of alcohol) I guess I'll add some more.

    Wildcat lemonade

    UV Blue Vodka
    pink lemonade packets/powder/premade

    Directions,

Mix lemonade and vodka until it is purple. Then drink.
