   Going to the moon was awesome in 1969. Now, it's supposedly part of getting to Mars. I guess flying to Mars and back would be an achievement.
   
   Instead of making it a national project, it would be better as a world project, as with the international space station.
   
   We need to get past nation states. If a world hobby of sending a crew to Mars and back will help make peace and cooperation, I am all for it. If it is part of an arms buildup, I am opposed.
   
   The whole thing about using space programs as a way for advancing science for commercial benefit is overplayed. It's good that new technology comes from space travel, but the real passion and push is motivated by primal drives, not by scientific curiosity. What drives us to the moon and Mars is the sheer awesomeness, coolness, unbelievableness. It cannot be quantified very well.
   
   Instead of minimizing the primal drives, we should accept them, and consider the science/commercial benefit a secondary bonus. In other words, it costs a lot to support this particular hobby. Either accept the costs or pick another hobby, but don't insult me by jiving the reason we need to go to Mars is for scientific purposes.
