Are we going to...
Continue to beat a dying horse in to working, or...
Are we going to nurture (change) the system back to working order?
What needs to change in order for our economic system to work?
Or…
Was our economic structure doomed from the start?
What is it we need to learn from this?

Judging by the bailouts, it seems like the current system is going to be nurtured back into shape. More of the same flogging a dead horse. Like George Carlin said, Germany lost the second world war, but fascism won.
I think the economic structure was doomed from the start. Too much government interference in the economy. They gave us paper and took the gold. -
Hebrews had a system that was purported to work. Every 50 years, debts were repudiated and the economy was given a means to reset. This was the jubilee cycle. We don't have an equivalent in our society so we have had some pretty severe panics and depressions...several in US history. If we don't periodically reset the system, the system will reset itself and carry the rest of us down with it till the country is ready to begin again.
Along with that, the current CEO system needs to go. Ditto for the big union bosses. Both feather their nests far too much while the workers can't pay the rent. And how is it that I as a secretary take home 35% of my gross pay when the fat cats pay 10% or less in taxes?
One thing in market reports: rarely does one hear a report where the viability of prices of products are measured by how many can genuinely afford to pay for them. One exception: The OC Register reported in 2005 that only 8% of homeowners could afford their own homes. That was before the subprime meltdown and when little more than stated programs and negative-amortizing products were being promoted.
The true state of the common man is virtually ignored and his general ignorance is exploited.
