I mean I was just wondering how many of those 150 years will he serve? Hopefully some of his victims will be compensated. What do you guys think is this sentence really fair for the victims or not?

It precludes the possibility of him ever getting parole.

Have all his assets been seized and sold to make some restitution to his victims? Or is his wife going to live lavishly on the proceeds of his crimes?

...And I hope he burns in hell!

What would be fair is putting behind bars all those who helped his operation. He shouldn't be the only one to pay for it.

Prison is a HUGE waste of tax payers' money and doesn't return a single penny to the poor people who lost their life savings. I would never ever ever use prison for non-violent, white collar crimes.

How much more sensible to make Madoff and all his cronies work a 40 hour week _for the rest of their lives_, with every penny of their salaries going to their creditors.

Plus the courts would be obliged to sell up the fraudsters' homes, cars, holiday chalets, antiques and art works, and give the moneys to their creditors as well.

Then the state would only have to pay for a shared room in a boarding house, some ankle bracelets and meals.

Of course such a scheme wouldn't return even 10% of the money the fraudsters stole, but the community would feel better. I should be Prime Minister

He'll probably be out in 5 years on some technicality

Well considering his age, I guess it's a good assumption he will die in prison, fair ? Yes in some ways, but it doesn't improve the life of the people whose life savings and retirements that he stole

Actually, contrary to the hundreds of hedge funds that have gone under with the financial crisis, Madoff's clients have been able to get money back from internediary financial institutions and can deduct their losses on their taxes. Because his fund was reportedly a fraud. I too think he could be out in some time on some technicality and would like to see the conditions of his incarceration.
