As with every year there's a whole host of new albums that arrive on the scene, some are inspired and some are insipid, but what have been some of this years most noteworthy albums?

You can check out my list of the years best (and worst) albums on my most recent blog post johnandnickys.blogspot.com/2008/12/best-and-worst-albums-of-2008.html

Feel free to comment on the blog and let me know if you agree or disagree with my choices, maybe you have some suggestions of your own, then let us know.

    Hi,

just like yourself I've posted my albums of the year on my site, echoisaacashe.blogspot.com, and until New Year's Eve people can vote for their favourite.

If you have a free minute to visit it and vote I'd be very grateful.

    Cheers!

Well, even though it was released in 2007 (at the end), I think Seal's "System" is one of the best albums in years. It's wonderfully produced; some of his best work to-date.

I also really enjoyed KT Tunstall's "Drastic Fantastic," even though it got very little commercial play.

I don't keep up with new music well enough to pick the best albums of the year. I'll have a look at these lists, though, because I'm always looking for more great music!

You know, I'm not surprised there's been no real feedback into this topic. I haven't heard a good cd in at least 10 years.

I wouldn't go quite that far. I bought two hot-off-the-presses CDs this year. Then again, they were Taj Mahal and the Willie Nelson/Wynton Marsalis collaboration, so I'm not exactly mainstreaming it. I have bought a few brand-new songs, however. In these days of free previews and blog postings, it's difficult to find an album I can't hear at length before I buy it, which means that I can decide to pick up only the one or two songs I really like instead of springing for the whole thing. Did Gogol Bordello's "Super Taranta!" come out this year? If so, that means that I bought three album the same year they were released. That actually may be a record for me.

Riverstyxxx, you haven't heard a good CD in 10 years because regardless of what is on the CD, record companies tend to compress the sound so that it would sound good on iPod. Good bye dynamic range, hello crap CD sound. Main reason I stopped buying music (the other reason is copy protection like rootkit software on CDs. Apparently they quit that now but how can you be sure?).

CommieKing, I'm with you on Satyricon. The only Satyricon I really enjoyed was their split EP with Enslaved. That was really, really good. The rest sounds like Cradle of Filth-style boy band black metal.

Worst album of 2008: Kings of Leon. I don't know what the album is called and I don't care. You must be tone deaf to like them.

Best album of 2008: Hate Eternal's Fury & Flames.

flamingpoodle nice to hear someone else agree with me on satyricon, although I'm admittedly not as critical of the rest of their work. Now, Diabolical has its problems but overall i still enjoyed it, i absolutely love Volcano it was the firsst taste of black metal i ever got and helped me get into the genre somewhat, probably mainly because it wasn't purist stuff so it was easier to get into and then develop my tastes further. Dark Medieval Times and Nemesis Divina I don't have any complaints about, they are fantastic albums and I would actually welcome a return to their earlier sounds, what happened to the medieval influence? I've actually not heard the split ep with Enslaved, or much of Enslaved on their own even although I am aware they brought out a new album this year that was getting much praise might need to give it a listen at some point, do you know yourself if it's any good?

Most Enslaved is excellent! It takes getting used to though, because the jump around between genres. They have a strong prog influence lately, but their earlier albums were straight ahead black metal. I quite liked Monumension, Isa and Ruun.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard their latest (Vertebrae) yet. The split they did with Satyricon is called Yggdrasill, appropriately enough. It has the typical black metal production where you can only hear treble.

If you're new to black metal, try some 1349. It is like the decent Satyricon you mentioned, except better and has decent production. They have Frost of Satyricon on drums. They did 3 albums I think, all of them are great.

I was really looking forward to Bloc party's new album and then I was really disappointed with it, it was very messy and didn't really hang together properly. I think they were trying for "OK Computer" and accidentally made something crap.
It's a fine line between genius and stupid.
    1. flamingpoodle
That was disappointing. What do you think of Maximo Park?
    2. aningeniousname
Not really a big fan of Maximo park I find them to be a little lightweight, I'd much rather listen to Super furry animals.
    3. sisterofmercy
Maximo Park's album was alright for background music but it didn't really thrill me, their first was loads better.
Scouting for Girls' album was a bit crap too.
Glasvegas' debut and Ladyhawke's album were both amazing though.
(I wrote a post about my favourite albums: a-wonderful-oddity.blogspot.com/2008/12/mandatory-2008-post-continued.html
