I just watched "Little Voices" a film about the Civil War in El Salvadore through the eyes of an 11 year old boy....

Another one:

"El Norte"
About the Guatemalan Mayans during the recent 36 year brutal civil war and their flight to the US.

Do you have any indy films (foreign, documentary, etc) you'd like to recommend?

Let's share your foreign or indy films here. I know there was another thread started awhile ago but I can't find it.

Ahhh I love films, I go out just about every week to watch a new one. As far as Indys I haven't seen one in a long time.

I had seen I am Legend at IMAX on opening night and it was great. But one film that I believe also made it big here in the states and most people would know of that I thought was spectacular and got your juices flowing was

    drum roll please....

    The City of God

    Produced and made in Brazil

I enjoyed "Pan's Labyrinth" quite a bit. A very strange film, but nicely done.

I went to this fabulous restaurant in San Francisco recently called

      www.foreigncinema.com/

and you can enjoy a delicious dinner and ambience while watching a foreign film on the outside patio. The night my friends and I went they played Pan's Labyrinth" - I didn't watch it because we were inside.

      Why did you like it?

So, I'll have to rent that one.
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
I liked it in particular because, in addition to its beautiful and well-done fantasy imagery, it managed to overlap the very real themes of war with the storybook elements in a cohesive way, without making the tale dissatisfying.

Pan's Labyrinth was awesome. One of the best movies I've seen since a very long time. It's so great how a little child's imagination is contrasted with the bruteness of the Spanish Civil War.
    4. drjay1966
Pan's Labrynth was amazing--way better than any of the Oscar nominees that year.

Hehe, using the term "foreign film" on a discussion board with so many international users is a bit weird, don't you think?

Pans Labyrinth was great, but not sure if it's 100% foreign?
    1. globalgirl
      Now, now, be kind Jung!

You can name an American film!
  4. globalgirl
    What about "Water"?

This one is about the tradition of child brides in India - absolutely riveting it made me want to run off to India to help the child widows. I still do.

I love the international film festival in Tromsø www.tiff.no/?lan=en . It's filled with quality movies from all over the world and non from Hollywood.

I usually see 3-4 movies every day at that festival so it can be hard to remember the movies, but this one comes to mind www.imdb.com/title/tt0373861/ "The Story of the Weeping Camel".
    1. crkian

If you want to marry her, better get out of Norway! I'm sure she'll return with you if you just show her your sunsets!
    3. techfun
Amelie rocked. I saw it three times in the theater, kept needing to take more people to see it.

Hell, I'd marry her and I'm gay.

Ben X, it's a Belgian movie, it got great international reception. It's about a boy with autism who goes to a regular school but gets teased and well, the rest you need to see for yourself. Video gaming plays an important role too, and it will be good for your Dutch.

Memory of a killer, Belgian movie as well, great story about a assesin with Alzheimer's disease. www.sonyclassics.com/memoryofakiller/trailer_qt.html

I love foreign (non-American) and indie films! Some that I have watched and highly recommend:

    - Paprika (Jap. sci-fi animation) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paprika_(2006_film)

    - Wristcutters: A Love Story (US indie) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wristcutters:_A_Love_Story

And there are many others I would recommend but others have already mentioned.

    - Lola Rennt/Run Lola Run (German) www.imdb.com/title/tt0130827/

    - Persepolis (Fr. animation. Autobiographical) www.imdb.com/title/tt0808417/
    1. StrawberrySwirl
Yeah Run Lola Run was great... though all she did was run through out the whole movie. I did see a few other movies that she made that was good also.
  15. RenalFailure
The Story of Ricky. Hong Kong, early 90's movie.

It's like the Shawshank Redemption if Andy Dufresne was an unstoppable karate machine who could punch through people.
  16. ThomasCSlater
I have just seen that movie "City of God", like a week ago. I never heard about it but I had it picked from Netflix and I am glad I watched it! Great movie!
  17. StrawberrySwirl
No but I did see "Fire." It's the first installment of that writers movies. Its about two women in India who fall in love with each other.
  18. aningeniousname

My favorite documentary is probably "Gimme Shelter."
The Maysles brothers set out to document the Rolling Stones 1969 American tour, and ended up documenting the end of the '60's.
  22. polybore
"Time of the Gypsies" is an incredible Yugoslav film about a Gypsy boy with telekinetic powers. Highly recommended.

Indiana Jones ... does that count?
    1. drjay1966
It depends what country you're in--if anywhere other than the U.S., that's a foreign film.
    2. drjay1966
