vonpip claims that Marina and the Diamonds will be the next biggie ... she's not bad
Although, ignorance is bliss .. as my knowledge of "the indie bands" spans only one website: epitonic.com/
My faves: Royal City, Cat Power, The Capitol Years, Rye Coalition, Pavement, Need New Body, etc ... (but, haven't been listening to new music for years now - have enough .mp3's to keep me away and thanks to Galaxy Music on digital TV. -
I dont know if I ever will have enough music, I love getting new tunes and absorbing them! I am definately going to check out epitonic.com! I like your indie music selection but I have discovered a couple of other hot bands like the features! WOW!!!
-
I am hooked on Bright Eyes! Go check it out at www.indiearto.com/search/label/Bright%20Eyes there is even a couple of free mp3's to download!!!!

OMG! I think I hate you for going to see them in Decemebr ; ) I would love to go and see them! They are like one of my favourite bands! I think if I must choose like top ten Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse and definately Yeah Yeah Yeah's make the list!!!!
P.S. I would be pee myslef if I knew I was going to see Modest!!!
Really go check out www.indiearto.com-
haha if i had to think about it fully i probably would.
I'm an obsessive fan, People just associate me with modest mouse, I don't realize I talk about them that much, but i just can't stop myself!
Pinback, Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel and The Unicorns are really good too.
But I don't really like mainstream indie, like the Kooks or Razorlight.

Yeah i dont rate those bands either but I really love the bands you mentioned especially Neutral Milk Hotel, i have had their album "Aeroplane over the Sea" for like four years and I still havnt got enough of it!

I'm always sort of shocked to see what counts as "indie" music, because apparently it has nothing to do with being published on an independent label. When people say "indie" do they just mean another stagnant genre populated by soundalikes who are more focused on image than music? I think so.
If you want to hear something that sounds good and is indepedently published, but not "indie," I would recommend LowSpeedDuplicating.-
I do think that's partly the case - you can hear dozens of bands and not be able to tell their vocalists and songs apart. I much prefer bands with a more distinctive sound or unusual instrumentation, although there's nothing wrong with the occasional foray into the popular, from time to time. Heck, I would have missed out on Vampire Weekend if I were a total trend-snob. I use the label "indie" on my blog for songs that are less-typical rock songs but aren't quite out there far enough to be alternative or even misc.

I would like to propose the term "indie" be thrown straight out of the window. How do you define what is indie and what is not anymore, and where do you draw the line where indie crosses over to mainstream. Is it something the bands themselves can control? Is it just public perception? And why are we so obsessed with labelling things? Can't we just call it music and be done with it? How about this question, "Whats the best band that most people haven't heard of?" That's what I'm interested in.
Sorry to be such a party poopy pants. -
I like Eels, Death Cab for Cutie and Silversun Pickups.
Yeah, I think it's kinda hard to define what indie sounds like. It's become a lot more mainstream lately, and I find it's hard to tell the difference between an indie band and a 'regular' band just by listening to them... I tend to use the term only for bands that are actually independent and not tied to any major label.
[shameless self-promotion] Ahem... I'm an independent musician, and it just so happens that I released my album a few days ago on my website...
[/shameless self-promotion] -
Na man I think their is definitely a line between indie bands and mainstream bands, indie is not just associated with being signed under an independent label but it is also a music genre. That is why you get real or true indie and mainstream indie. I will never in my life call nickelback or creed indie, thasts just music for the masses and really bad music too.
Cool Rainhat, I am gonna check your shameless self promoted album : ) -
Im at work now so I could'nt really check out to much of your work but I downloaded the first track and it was pretty cool! I will download the rest and leave a comment about it... mmmmmm if its good maybe i'll review your album on my blog...

I used to listen to Spoon quite a bit, but I'm afraid I have been too busy to keep up with anything. Anyone have any suggestions for Indie bands in the same vein?
-
yo dkeage, if you like spoon go check this out indiearto.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Features its a relatively new indie band, which I am sure will be to your liking, oh yeah they are called "The Features". Let me know what you think.

@trailofpen, yes it is true that many "starving" artists would give a limb to get their music heard and obviously make money from it but if you look at Jeff Magnum from Neutral Milk Hotel, who stepped out from the music scene once the attention got to much, it tells you that he made music just to make music. Thats the impression I get from indie artist they make artistic, experimental and extremely creative music which happens to fall under the indie category, indie is in fact a very broad and wide category!

I find it funny when people won't listen to music because it is considered mainstream. I also find it funny that the definition of the term "indie" has transformed into something much more broad and undefinable. I mean, can you classify Pepe Deluxe as an indie band or are they just fucking amazing?
There are many artists that were originally considered "indie" but are now being played on many radio stations. Bands such as metric, mgmt, death cab, modest mouse, vampire weekend and LCD soundsystem just to name a few, all have hits that are played over and over on the radio. Now it seems like there are two types of music stars, the indie star, and mainstream star. It makes no sense.
The term "indie", now has this negative connotation associated with it because it could imply your band is mainstream and it implies that your band has this certain type of sound that nobody can really agree on. I don't think many bands actually want to be labeled as indie, but rather with a descriptor of the type of music they play. Indie is not a genre and definitely does not describe any kind of specific sound. Indie was a fad. A term that meant a band was signed to an independent label and their music sounded original. Then its meaning morphed out of control and has since lost any meaning whatsoever and now it's just lame.-
Thank you crpitt
What I was trying to say is two things,
1. We need to get rid of the term indie
2. There are two many elitists when it comes to music. There are many "mainstream" songs that you might enjoy if you could just get over yourself.
BTW the new grizzly bear album is great. Ready, Able is a sonic delight!

Ok, I apologize for saying blah blah blah but I just cannot agree with you although I can see your point and you do have a valid one about music being termed indie, but indie does not have a negative connotation to me, in fact, I love it.
Yes it was one paragraph to much for me...
Yeah new Grizzly Bear album is awesome!
