Here's a few that come to mind:

    Jets over Colts- 1969

    Ali over Liston- 1964

USA over USSR- Olympic Hockey 1980

I have to agree with you on the Jets over the Colts.

I'd add Ali over Foreman for the rumble in the jungle fight and the biggest boxing upset ever Buster Douglas beating Tyson in Tokyo.
I think Douglas was something like 200-1 to win that fight.

      Good one, ole great ardvaak...

As far as boxing, how do you rate the Hagler/Leonard fight in '86.

Don't remember the date but When Tyson ate George's ear I imagine it was pretty upsetting.

HAHA Shirley, but that was Evander Holyfield he bit.
    4. Shiley
Lol! well, still pretty upsetting! You'd be upset if someone ate your ear.

I don't know whether I would class Hagler/Leonard as a big upset because even though Hagler was a big favourite he was past his peak. I think the Leonard/Duran "No mas" fight was a bigger shock.

The Foreman - Ali fight was fantastic. I think I've watched it about 50 times.

I was replying to aningeniousname's comment way above, but because I forgot to hit "reply" when I made Ali-Foreman comment, it ended up 5 miles away after everyone else made their "reply" comment.

Anyway, Leonard - Hagler was a great fight. So was Hagler - Duran, Hagler - Antuofermo (when Antuofermo was champion) and for that matter Leonard - Duran 1 was magnificent. How about the St Valentine's Day Massacre 2/14/51-- Robinson vs LaMatta? I've never seen a person take that kind of punishment and stay on his feet.

The 80's was a golden time for the middleweights, not only did you have Leonard, Hagler and Duran but also Hearns, Benn, Eubank, Collins, and Watson.
Those Lamotta/Robinson fights are like the Duran/Leonard fights Lamotta and Robinson are like the prototypes of Duran/Leonard.
Thinking back to the old fighters how about Gene Tunney beating Jack Dempsey, that was a huge upset.

Good point--it's hard to imagine Jack Dempsey ever losing a fight. But he was champion for a good 6 or 7 years by the time he fought Tunney. That's a lot of wear and tear for a heavyweight champion in the 1920's. And Gene Tunney was no mediocre fighter. I think he retired undefeated.

I think the last Tunney fight Dempsey hadn't fought for about five years and Tunney absolutely murdered him. I'm not sure but apart from early football world cup matches that fight had the biggest recorded crowd it was definitely the biggest boxing crowd ever.

Just checked 120,000 people watched it.

That's back when the gate was the revenue. Make's sense. I wonder how many people listened to the Louis - Schmeling rematch on the radio. That drew extraordinary interest also.

The GREATEST upset was when the Yankee's fell to the Boston Red Sox in 2004 in the ALCS.

That was the greatest series. EVER!
    1. RTBjr73
Took you long enough to bring that one up!!! LOL

And you DO mean the "down 0-3 in the series and winning four straight" Red Sox, right?

      ;-)
    2. melindaville
Ahem! It was down 3 and won EIGHT (sorry, Tommy--you know what happend after the ALCS to your beloved Red Birds!).
    3. RTBjr73
      Melinda...you're a punk...I hope Ortiz hits .220 this season.

Bite your tongue, Tommy! Besides, your beloved Cards won it all in 06 (and I was so happy for you guys!).
