People seem to ask me to change my background color to white very often, however other people say that they can't read a page with a white background.
What are the benifits of having a black or white background and what do you prefer?

I prefer a dark background, not necessarily black.

The brightness of a light background makes me adjust brightness/contrast, highlighting the text or squinting my eyes to read it. But that's just me.

Me too, I always highlight it.

To each its own, everyone can't have it there way this isn't Burger King. Do what ever you feel is best for you and your blog, some will like it and some won't.

What color background does Burger king use? XD

The background on my blog is black. A couple of readers said it hurt their eyes, so I lightened it by one step and that seems to have solved the problem. So, I would say, keep the black.

How could black hurt there eyes? Unless of course the text was bright yellow or teal. Otherwise a black background is the same as a turned off screen.

Too much contrast with the white text - sorry to be unclear.

I don't have any proof or haven't read any studies on it, but my gut feeling is ninety percent of readers prefer a white or light background. And pleasing taste I think is very important in readers sticking around.

I as a reader prefer to read black on white(or light) background.
Black background is too hard for me to read ( ask me too much concentration) even though I do have a perfect vision.
Like for BC, even if the general background is dark, the texts are on a white background.

I like having contrast, sort of like the BC design, with a really dark gray in the background but lighter grays and whites in the text field, I think it is very classy. Bright colors will hurt the eye and I think sometimes they look unprofessional.

I like bright colors and pink leopard skin. Professionalism can be overrated.

You may want to try the color contrast tool in this post which advocates a proactive approach --- avoid reader complaints or turn-off.:
