Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world's bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day on their own blogs with the aim of sparking discussion around an issue of global importance. Blog Action Day 2009 will be the largest-ever social change event on the web and this year the focus is on global Climate Change. My post is targeted at building a Brighter Planet through the 350 Challenge.

Um, no...I prefer to participate in REAL action days, which include volunteering, giving to charities, etc. I still fail to see how writing a post helps (& I'm pretty sure most people are already aware of climate change, AIDS, starving people, etc.) That's just me, though.

I see where your coming from. We also do "real" actual physical involvement for humanitarian and sustainability issues but blogging in itself is a real action to increase and spread awareness. It is possible that you might share information with others that is new, unique and useful regarding a social action campaign. That in and of itself is a noble act that sets in motion a process of participation, increased awareness, growth and change.

Yeah, I participated and wrote about how in the local vacitnity being a net contributor to mankinds negative impact on the environment is almost unavoidable.
LGramlich, aren't real action days about reaching people with ideas. This seems as real as any other kind of action day on the topic of climate change for the everyday man and woman reading a blog from where I'm typing. Isn't sharing ideas what blogging is all about? At the very least it might help to keep the problem at the front of peoples minds and maybe give someone a new perspective they hadn't come across before. -
No, but I will be participating in the poverty day event at bloggersunited.com along with more events from there in the future.

Any time.
I do actually have a somewhat controversial view on the subject. I don't really engage in debate on it, and I'm not qualified to be an expert; But...
... I've read a lot of data, and there is no question that some indicators seem to be in or approaching positions that we can not verify there having ever been in the past. BUT. What no one ever talks about is the fact that this planet has spent a LOT more time under the ice than free of it.
Practically speaking all of human history has occurred in this one little interglacial period. Yes we were apparently here prior to the start of that period, but we didn't have any history and certainly no civilization prior to it.
It is pretty well generally accepted as far as I can understand from what I've read that in the absence of this interglacial period we would not be who and what we are today.
It is also, as far as I can understand, accepted that eventually there WILL come the return of the next glacial period.
Given this information, I draw the conclusion that;
1) global warming if anything will serve to stave off the ice for a few decades or (if we are lucky) centuries.
2) being cold sucks, being frozen sucks more. So if we caused global warming. Yay us!!

I feel , as I stated before, the global climate change arguments are so poorly constructed as to do real damage to the greater cause of environmental improvement. They are the wrong theses and there are far more moving appeals that can be made to the human spirit that would be less political and ultimately more effective.
When the weather bureau can tell how many hurricanes there will be in any given season, they'll have a little more credibility with me. Their own stats claim that a three day forecast is more accurate than a five day and a five day more accurate than a thirty day. The odds that they can predict the weather in ten years are, by extention of their own methodology, infinitesimal.
Love your planet starting with your own little plot of it. And love it because it's beautiful, not because you're afraid. Scared people rarely make rational choices.-
The problem is climate change rather than weather change, and there isn't a forcast but a trend. That trend is based on a sudden sharp change in climate compared to much more regular cycles of global warming and cooling from the last 2.6 million years. If we don't make bigger changes, primarily from the largest net polluters - industry/commerce/transport we're likely to see that our own little plot of this planet for many of us isn't suitable for human habitation let alone being beautiful.

@laurence Do you think all positive action movement or in this case, climate change awareness, is all predicated upon fear or is it the media either used by or attempting to partake in implicit promotion for broader political motives rather than necessary and conscientious environmental stewardship?

I wrote about how sustainable living is important to preserve resources since musical instruments demand certain qualities in the choice of woods, metals and other materials. My own piano is solid mahogany which gives superior sonorities but it was made in 1950 and since then we have lost huge preserves of mahogany, etc.

I did participate in this years Blog Action Day. Actually since I am taking Environmental Society and Transportation Policy at Iowa State University, these two classes helped me write my blog post. Here it is: www.blogofdjj1758.com/2009/10/public-transit-only-with-traffic-congestion/
I basically talked about how public transportation could improve our air pollution, because our current usage of our modes of transportation is the main contributor.
I would have to say, yes to that something needs to be done whether it is actually true or not. It would certainly be beneficial and helpful in the long run.
