Can someone (and this has probably been asked before)explain to me where blog catalog gets the rank or how they rank blogs. I see blogs with low traffic numbers (as per BC) etc with high numbers and then I see sites with high traffic numbers but low BC rank...

Help?

Blog Rank - a special formula that analyzes your hits, views, comments, neighborhood members and other special secret ingredients to create a numeric score based on a 100 point scale. Your Blog Rank is primarily used to determine the order blogs appear in our Directory and Search Results. The higher your score the better your placement.

Ahhhhh - so it is basically abritray -

It seemed to make no sense when I started to look at them for different blogs...

I know that mine has gone up quite a bit since I have been here just this month. I started as a 39 now I am a 59.5 if you read carkian's blogcatalog guide he reveals more on this, but the first comment is basically true.

It is an enigma, really. I think I like it that way.

    All mysterious n' stuff.

It has a lot to do with how much time you contribute to BC forums, and their community, makes sense, but since I haven't spent a whole lot of time here, my ratings suck, yet my traffic ratings apart from BC are the best they've ever been.

Some of the other comments don't add up. People with brand new listings and not Blog Catalog traffic or activity get higer rankings than some more established blogs.

I started at 14 about 2 months ago, quickly jumped up to 24, slowly crept up to 31, I didn't post in about 2-3 weeks and dropped to 20. All that makes sense until I see brand new blogs listed starting at 30 and blogs with virtually no blog catalog activity rated higher.

Not sure how it all works myself But I have been here for 3 days and my blog is 7 days old and I have a rank of Blog Rank: 48.4 of 100.

So which end of the scale is the better...1 or 100?

I wondered that too after seeing my Rank go up. I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or bad thing! I thought, "How did I go down in my rank? Or am I going up? I'm so confused!"

    Articulates,
    100 is the best.

    Stockhola,
I tried to check out your blog. The window locks up on me and I can't scroll or click links. This only happens on your blog and it has happened consistently for me.

Blog rank, views, hits, visits, unique visitors, etc. Is it really that important that we know all of it?
  14. BennyGreenberg
None of it makes sense to me at all!

I do know that putting blog catalog widgets on your blog makes it go up.

I started out with a 15 rating a month or 2 ago. I post a lot on the discussions. It has steadily risen little by little each day. Now it is around 43. It seems to have more to do with your participation with blog catalog than anything else.

I came in at 22 and barely breaking 40 now. For me, it's just fun watching the numbers go up and down. I have made observations, and by making a few notations, I believe I am beginning to have a good idea of how its done. (I've always been a curious tinkerer and an analyst) However, I am not privy to the hard facts to back my theory up - Nards

Howdy...I do not know the exact criteria but I believe it is the combination of hit, discussion, post & most probably the button you choose to put on yr blog... 15may, the BC ask us to write something about Human Rights, try to participate, maybe something will be gain... Take care..

I think it's a whole combination of things. Doing discussions, shouts, reviews, and getting reviews, views, comments, basically being active in BC, plus maybe doing the widgets and buttons. I just let it all go and have fun and that seems to work the best. I started mid Feb., but wasn't active until probably mid March and I'm 63.6. I just added widgets and buttons last night and my rank hasn't gone up yet....sooooo...who knows? Not me. I recommend listening to your heart and having fun. That's what life should be...heart-based fun.

Thanks BennyGreenberg, for replying to my post. I got it. My PR is 47 now, not bad, I think, since I've been a BlogCatalog member for only 7 days.

    @recyclecindy
There has to be mystery with respect to the algorithm used or else bloggers would game the system.

I thought if you used a joystick when you logged on and tapped up up down down left right left right a b start - You earned one rank point...

or was that how you got unlimited lives in Contra for the Nintendo.... Hmmm

It's BC's secret sauce. I know one of the ingredients is mayo.
