NOTICE: BlogCatalog Data Loss.

Unfortunately we recenly suffered some data loss on our server. We had to roll back most of the data to out June 25th backup. We were able to rescue the blog data and user information as well as some discussions up to July 6th 4PM CST.

We want to deeply apologize for any inconvenience this causes anyone. We are doing our best to get the site back to normal, so if you see anything that doesn't look right please let us know at webmaster@blogcatalog.com

This is not an ideal situation, but sometimes stuff comes up in life. I think we should all look at this as an opportunity to rediscover sites again and repost comments and reviews that are even better than the first time around.

If you're using Gmail, and you set you BC settings to receive notifications every time someone adds you or joins your neighborhood, you can use that to touch bases with them again and re-add them where needed.

I was having huge problem to connect to BC. Now I lost whole bunch friends. I don't even remember who was on my friend list.

BC's staff must feel really bad now ... suffering the pain and stress ..

We are really sorry for the inconvenience and hassles this has caused you. We are working on a new server and should have it running by week end. This should avoid similar problems in the future.

In the mean time, we hope this hasn't cause you too many problems.

  Well I was wondering why my community members disappeared....sheshhh...what an ego reality check when you come in and you only have 3 people who have joined your neighborhood. Just yesterday I had a few more than that. I too understand that technical difficulties happen. However, I just donated the 6 bucks last night and today I get my members wiped out. I just hope you guys get things fixed...it was running rather well I thought before all of these changes. BTW...I also speak for Moondanzer...my other account...so that's actually 12 bucks. But...since you guys are located in Texas...my home state...I guess I'll survive...I mean it's not like I'm Madonna or something. It will all work for the best I am sure. ~jackie

Some people are already trying to rejoin my neighborhood and friends list but they're not showing up. I would SERIOUSLY hold off on any action until the dust settles and BC is working properly, otherwise we may end up losing our contacts all over again. :-O

  the neighborhoods appear to be working properly. I should also note that if the user who is joining hasn't been approved yet they wont show up on your neighborhood list.

Yep same for me all added friends and neighborhoods gone from about 25th of June and i spent 2 hours on Sunday doing a trawl around for like minded thinkers and visitors! Then again I filled up my car with gas on Thursday and it was stolen 2 hours later. I think its called Murphy's law!

Question - considering this data loss happened - is there any way to export an XML file of your profile, neighborhoods and friends - so that your settings could be backed up? Just curious if it's even a possibility.

Gee, Pretty wierd !
My biggest loss here was all those discussions I posted and participated in.; Also, my Blog thumbshot was reverted back to an older version, I lost some RSS feed titles, some viewers of my Blog, and the statistical count of viewers to my Blog ! It was something like 130 odd yesterday, now it's just 94 odd ! *sob*.
Apart from that, everything seems OK.; Don't know if it's too much to ask as to what happened ??? ( Don't answer that question if it's too private ! It's OK... )

And Guess what !? My Laptop PC got attacked by the annoying E-Card Worm Virus yesterday afternoon. Norton prevented half the worm files from getting to my computer, and it resulted in the laptop kept re-booting itself after a blue-screen of death because the worm failed to locate certain files blocked by Norton. Luckily, I had an ( earlier ) full back-up of my laptiop's hard-drive, from which I restored the hard-drive image last night. Set me back about six months, and luckily I didn't install too many programs in that time. I've managed to catch up now with most software application installations and configurations. I'm almost back up to date now with my laptop.; Thogh I wish i wasn't silly enough to open that damn email in the first place ! Hmmmm

Simple explanation is we made a mistake.

There was no major technical issue. The mistake happened after 3 weeks of programming and the launch of the new blogcatalog design and functions.

The main reason we couldnt recover everthing is that growth on BlogCatalog over the past 2 months has been so fast that we didnt keep up on the server side of things.

By the end of this week, however, we will be running the community on much faster servers with more frequent backups. This way even if this occurs again (which is highly unlikely) our backup data will be a day old at the most.

Sorry to know about the data loss! Unfortunately, I started being active on Blog Catalog since 26th June, 2007 and when I logged into my account after 3 or 4 days, EVERYTHING is gone. 27+ community members, 107 blogs that I picked from the directory, 30+ friends, comments, messages, etc.

Should I smack my head on the desk? Nothing can be worse than this situation when you spend two days writing an article about MyBlogLog and Blog Catalog, trying to show Blog Catalog way nicer than MBL and suddenly, the sky falls on your head!

Anyway, I hope to survive. Be careful in the future, guys.
