I was reading andy's post where he has interviewed blogcatalog about the recently launched technorati media.

andybeard.eu/2008/06/technorati-advertising-blogcatalog.html

There I saw this comment by John Sullivan -

"I found going on Blogcatalog to be the most UNPRODUCTIVE use of time period.I mean even twitter brings more traffic, since they deleted my account for whatever reason.I have been MUCH better off."

Here are my views on this -

Different views grow your intellect. What is your take on this?

Time is only ever wasted for those too vain to enjoy life.
  2. hiteshthegame
definitely voodookobra. But I am still surprised by the fact that someone called BC a waste of time.
  3. timethief
Really? That's not my experience at all. IMHO BC is what you make it. If you go for it. use the features, locate related blogs, leave meaningful comment then you see the results.

    My approach is here www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/blogcatalog#comment_724351

I joined in March and so far my two blogs have received a combined total of 3,125 hits referred by BC.

Also today in that same thread pointlessbanter said: "Blog catalog referred over 5,500 visitors to my site this year... I can't complain."
    1. timethief
I posted a comment on Andy's blog. The first time I tried I got a network out error message. The second time I tried the comment was swallowed so I assume it's in moderation.

As for John Sullivan, AKA jsinkeywest I don't take his comment seriously. I watched him spam the forum night after night and I read the rambling, nasty diatribe he wrote before it was deleted. I can't say I'm at all sorry that he was banned. After all is said and done he trolled both of my blogs as well and I kept the comments as evidence of what I believe is characteristics a certain variety of mental instability caused by a swelled head that lacks much content.
    2. AndyBeard
I am not sure about the network error you received, I haven't had any downtime reported by my site monitoring service over the last few days (montastic.com - free service)

As for the comment, I currently have 2400 human left comments currently in moderation. For something to appear on a 6 month old post the person leaving the comment has to have left tons of comments in the past.

Also on 6 month old posts, my general practice is to delete comments unless they add a huge amount of value to the conversation, and they have to be very specific to the article.

The article was about Technorati Media plus Blogcatalog trying thm out. When it was first posted a few slightly off-topic comments were allowed, and responded to.

How much quality related traffic that can be monetized a site receives from a specific activity depends on so many factors, though often the sites that receive the most traffic from Blogctalog are ones that publish breaking news, and Blogcatalog acts as a conduit to their content.
That doesn't mean that traffic can be monetized or results in subscribers, different niche's have different traffic patterns and reader habits.

One niche that seems to do especially well are celebrity gossip bloggers.
  4. hiteshthegame
exactly. This is what I have covered in my responsive post mentioning a few more reasons.

I feel like may be it is personal. For me BC is the best place i have found so far. It is not all about traffic. I found this place so friendly and all the members are cool. Fun place... If I think BC is waste of time I should stop my blog as well. I am with BC.
  6. Nesmuth
Theres thousands free programs that bring traffic to my site. BC is one of them and if it brings in a trickle, thats fine by me. 1000 little trickles is big result. BC isnt a waste of time.
    1. timethief
I agree that any blogger who really wants to promote their blog and increase traffic to it isn't wasting their time at BC. I also observe that there are some members here that aren't particularly into blog promotion. They like the socializing on the forum and the result is an interesting and dynamic community mix.

The referrals I get from BC as well as those I get from wordpress.com and from search engines and stumbleupon are adding up very well for me. Like nesmuth says from various referrers "1000 little trickles is big result".
  7. Robbyg13
nothing is a waste of time if used correctly. Cheers. And I like the comment by Nemuth. 1000 trickes... good point.
    1. sjay
I think u have a point ..have to use it correctly ...otherwise life is a waste and you have to enjoy every movement of it

    @hiteshthegame
Your post was very well written and I agreed with the contents. I left you a comment. G'night

ATTENTION PLEASE! There is a major update. John Sullivan has left a comment on my post about blog catalog

    prochow.blogspot.com/2008/12/blogcatalog-is-waste-of-time-what.html

He is still not convinced on the usefulness of BC. But its OK. Everybody has his/her own opinion. I thank him for the comment
    1. timethief
I howled with laughter when I saw this: ATTENTION PLEASE! Hello, the blog comment you received is an extremely tamed down version of the three troll comments, replete with obscenities that I received on both of my blogs from the same under bridge dweller. Who cares what this troll, who was banned from BC for link dropping, forum spamming and defaming BC, its owners and community members thinks or says? I don't.
    2. hiteshthegame
But I thought my post will convince him on the usefulness of BC. But his comment was still against it. Never Mind!
  10. sandypmch1
Blogcatalog sends about 10-20 visitors to my blog daily. I don't say it is a big number but then I think every single visitor that come to your blog is valued.
Apart from the traffic I have been able to make many friends and I have been networking with many of them. This is the biggest reason I am staying with blogcatalog.BC is not at all a waste of time.
  11. acousticguitarist
It is easy to spend time here, but there are so many positives. I'm not even going to mention the hidden reasons of how valuable it is. If people don't have a technical enough brain to work that one out, it's their problem
  12. ThriftShopRomantic
BC is certainly what you make it. And I've had some good conversations here, met some nice folks, found blogs in my niche and have been able to network.

As with any service, you'll have folks who won't care for it, or will have an axe to grind. I wouldn't worry much about it. Some people just enjoy stirring things up.
    1. acousticguitarist
And you can meet pandas with the same color hair
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
      I KNOW-- that's the BEST.
    3. acousticguitarist
      True, very true
  13. jafabrit
I agree with others, it is what one wants to get out of it, and how one uses it. I am not after traffic here, and just as well because I don't get very much (most of mine comes from google search engines). I have found some quality contacts and enjoyed many of the posters here who are willing to share advice, ideas, tips and sometimes really interesting debates.

It could be viewed as unproductive, but then so are many things in life
    1. acousticguitarist
Yes I agree about the tips. When I've had a problem, within a few minutes a few solutions have been presented by other members
    2. jafabrit
and we get to meet cuddly bears oops, I mean panda's hee hee!
  14. clioandme
@hiteshthegam: The answer to your question about the comment is contained in the comment itself. The key phrase is "since they deleted my account for whatever reason." Why does BC delete accounts? For violating the rules of the game, meaning abusive treatment of others or spamming or such. And it takes a lot for BC to take such a step. If past missteps by members are anything to go by, admin here is not trigger happy. Your commenter here was not playing by the rules and has a chip on his shoulder.

Of course, it is still possible to critique BC, but I think you'd need firmer ground first. I personally find it easy to waste time on BC, but that is my choice. If you're consciously trying to build traffic, find other blogs, network, etc., then this is a decent tool. It's all in how you use it.
    1. hiteshthegame
very right indeed! But even time wasting at BC is valuable. I always get to learn a lot even when I am wasting time.
    2. legbamel
Dang, you beat me to it. I thought that was the most telling part of his response. Sour grapes, anyone?
  15. hiteshthegame
Most importantly, I think BC is a group of bloggers who actually interact with and come to know other bloggers , which in not the case with other blog directories. The isolation is not there in BC. And that is why it rocks!
  16. idealpinkrose
If you are looking for friends and some good advices, BC is the good place to be. But that's not the only things that I found here. I also got more traffic like what others say.
    1. technomicro
Where u got traffic,, idealpinkrose, can u say
  17. COOLINGSTAR9
Traffic is flowing day by day like the flood.
  18. msbaby
It's not all about traffic, but I do see a good bit of traffic from BC to one of my blogs.

Is it a time waster? That depends on whether your regard time spent enjoying what you are involved in wasted? If that's the case tennis, golf, football or any activity with no end product might be called a waste of time.
  19. vijayanths
Absolutely not. I find this site very much helpful. Warm members like timethief are always here to help the members with their knowledge and experience. Bc is a powerful tool of SEO according to me,thanks.

there's no one can believe it. oh.....andy's.....how can you say that words

I have met some wonderful people on Blog Catalog and I do get some traffic from this directory. I have also found some great blogs that I never would have found if not for BC. Everyone does have a right to their opinion. My main priority is to create good content. I realize I have a very niche blog so I am not concerned about traffic at this point. Quality is much better than quantity and through BC I have been able to connect with people that I would never have before. I am pretty savvy when it comes to blogs and bloggers and this guy has not been on my radar, in a way I am glad. Anyone who disparages a site outright because of his own personal experience without taking anyone else's into account is not someone I am interested in following. Thanks for the post.
  22. rfburnhertz
The claim is counter to my experience. BC doesn't throw me a ton of traffic, but I don't think BC is simply to generate traffic. I think it has more of a community feeling to it than most of the services we sign on with to generate traffic.

There is an added ability in BC connect with people in a way you are not going to with most other services or even through your blog via the comments section.

You can have prolonged conversations here that you aren't going to have most other places outside of an email conversation.

I've no problem with BC I think it accomplishes very well what I want from it.
  23. joefaz
I too think BC is more about sociability then it is about generating traffic, but I find that on the nights I put some extra time into BC it has always rewarded me with extra traffic. Just like anything else you need to put a little something in before you get something out of it, but its worth it and it generally pays off. I have had more interaction here at BC than most other social sites and my fair share of traffic too. I like the set up and the tools are easy to work with. Best of all most people on BC are not afraid to reciprocate and they are definitely not pretentious.

    Regards,

    Joseph

You're right! It was a thoughtless comment. Anyway, I found blogcatalog useful and interactive..
  25. filosofia
At the end of the day, what's important is not how much traffic you get or how much money you make, but how much you enjoy what you're doing...
  26. AlexGreat
I'm in blogging for the discussion with intelligent people and BC is an excellent place for that.
  27. dratiffarid
I love BlogCatalog. It's a great place to interact with others and make friends. I've read some amazing blogs out here.
  28. kbarton10
I don't think Blog Catalog traffic is worth much. Posting questions like, "Does anyone like Oranges?" and a link to your blog, or "Rate my blog, Please!" doesn't bring interested readers that'll return day in and day out, it'll pad your numbers and you'll feel like your being read - but you're not.

Only referrals from a like source brings the eyes you're really looking for - and social networks contain some, but not many ... depending on your topic.

Referrals generated by original content via Google are what's needed, not the sudden flurry of people hitting your blog because you posted a silly question, or want to build a link farm.

When I was registering my blog here i was not looking for traffic. I just wanted my blog exist on internet. But I have noticed but people visit my blog, from here. That mean my blog is useful and i am happy that can be helpful to somebody!

well...i think not, sorry to tell but I've just created a new blog and i guess that's just a month ago, didn't have much content yet..i don't have extra time to advertise my blog and just registered here....and it's doing pretty well...tnx to blogcatalog that is...
  32. ModelElaine
BC is the only blogging social network that I hang out at
  33. benspak
DC is enjoyable becuase I can talk to other bloggers and I get some decent traffic from it... SO not not at all ^_^
  34. redfeilds18
    itz a waste of time
  35. PetLvr
Yes .. I get way more hits and referrals from Twitter .. but, who are my friends that are clicking the links?

Friends from Blog Catalog mostly. Or, people (in my opinion and belief) that recognize me here from Blog Catalog that may notice a headline or tweet post and decide to follow up and click the link just because it is me - PetLvr, from Blog Catalog.

I could be wrong, but I'll still keep coming to BlogCatalog anyway It's like stress relief around the clock, if you want it! People are here at all hours of the day.
  36. rileycentral
It's a tool and therefore whatever you make of it. It can be leveraged to help traffic or to waste time with friends or just to have people drive you crazy ... you make the choice (as I do LOL).
  37. jeremylong
    Just believe in yourselves.
    Do you deem fit.
All such sites do bring traffic; only to what extent and quality?
BlogCatalog may be your pot of gold, who knows?
  38. cmzart
I have found a number of really good blogs through my discussions on BC..blogs that I probably wouldn't have run across otherwise. I'm glad I belong to BC and don't see that changing anytime soon.
  39. eastonellsworth
BlogCatalog is a fantastic place that is growing fast. I was surprised to see Compete data the other day showing its traffic growth compared to that of MyBlogLog and Technorati: tinyurl.com/bcgrowth

It's all about people and relationships. If you're just trying to get mass numbers of page views to your blog or website from BlogCatalog, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're trying to use BlogCatalog to meet people you can do business with or be friends with, it's pretty simple to accomplish.
