Thanks Tony!
Just so everyone knows, I'm managing this contest for the film. Having been a member so long, I thought it might be fun to include BlogCatalog members. So if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Best,
Rich -

It could be fun, which is mostly why we shared it here.
Really, someone could make anything and then tie in the movie or soundtrack a little bit. E.g., could be an 80s thing, outcast kid thing, any number of artists on the soundtrack, NASA, etc. Someone already posted a chipmunk version of the Hilary Duff song on YouTube. So that idea is taken.

Oh yeah interestin.'
Midnight Moon..
I'm NOT at ease.
Where will these books take me.
I'll check it out after my eXams

Yes Mel. You can check the entire soundtrack via iTunes ( tinyurl.com/dcckgu ) and work around that for the contest.
Or, if you want to review for your The Not-Pop Jukebox blog, I'll drop you a note.
Best,
Rich

Could you provide some decent sized BC logos that we could use? Also can the producers of the film make available images/ logos etc?
This BC logo in particular.

-
I'll see what I can do about the BC logo. We have Flickr files for the movie/soundtrack that might work.

This is a good way to help the movie and move up to the top list.
And also a good way on promoting your blog also
I'm in with this contest...

If you want to see polybore's video work in progress for this competition you can see it here polybore.blogspot.com/2009/05/video-work-in-progress-for.html
Includes the BC logo as never seen before.
Not done yet quite a lot of tweaking to do before it gets entered into the comp. Any suggestions for improving it would be much appreciated.
Also hope BC are ok with what has been done to their logo. -
For those who might want to know what the movie is about before designing promotional material, here is a link to the What Goes UP official site:
www.whatgoesup-themovie.com/synopsis.html-
From everything I have read to date, Robert Lawson's take on his song helps define the deeper meaning behind the film. Lawson was both one of the writer's for the film and wrote the song that serves as the conclusion. whatgoesupmovie.blogspot.com/2009/05/behind-music-of-any-other-day.html
In terms of a synopsis, this one might better convey the meaning. whatgoesupmovie.blogspot.com/2009/04/what-goes-up-official-synopsis.html
While it is difficult to know exactly why Sony changed the working title, I do know that reference seems to be tied to the concept that heroes are human. They ascend, but the ascent is not permanent for any number of things that life throws at us.
-
Tony v1.0, are there some elements (images, video, audio etc) we can get to work with ?
I mean movie elements -
-
Dude - Polybore already makes the cut so well that I have nothing to add in comparison UNLESS I saw the entire movie. And he just started.
In fact - THE TRAILER was Fabulous - but the synopsis... To me, it was so badly written that I couldn't follow the concept of the film.
As a reader who wants to know the guts of the movie - I don't care about the names of the people - that people in the film, are going to write about... That should be part of the movie that is another ------- uhm... detail - that makes the movie whole.
Watching the trailer - however made sense.
Watching the trailer AND reading the synopsis I get this:
A bunch of teenagers who are misfits in a classroom fall into sudden devastation when their teacher commits suicide.
When a new person accidentally takes over the class, the dysfunctional teens start giving the new teacher, played by blah superstar blah, the same hero worship the previous teacher had.
Among rumors of sexual misconduct - acts of rebellious teenage angst, the world becomes a bit clearer for both the students and the teacher - changing the lives of all the characters in the movie.
This is a MUST see filled with humor, sadness, hero-worship issues and life lessons. Starring SuperStar A, B, C, D - with cameo by actor C and directed by so-so Joe.
Now - if I watched the film - I wonder what I'd write. LOL!
Seriously - on the main webpage - IF I HAD READ THAT BEFORE I WATCHED THE TRAILER - I wouldn't have bothered to watch.
Still I'm an artist with words, lyrics and minor paintshop graphics... As an Artist, I don't know if I can create something to present something that I don't know enough about.
I mean - I could make something flashy about BC doing a Contest about the Movie WGU - without really knowing ANYTHING about the movie... But it would be just that - pretty dressing that doesn't fit.
LOL!
Anyhow - that's just my super humble opinion.
WW
(Dang, I'm sounding grumpy lately.)-
WagerWitch,
You know, I sooooooo cannot argue with you because you are soooo right. The Web site synopsis has been a torn in my side since the beginning.
It's been nudged on the blog ... and has to gradually match what Sony intends to put on the DVD. But that's a whole different story that's best told many, many months from now.
Rich -
I think - often, if you are close to the picture, or the project... It is hard to step back and explain it.
Because you see the whole picture, the grand scheme and you want to sell it the way it is, inside of you, not the way the general public would view it.
And YOU understand how the parts, that seem nonsensical to someone who doesn't know the whole picture, all work together to bring it all into something big and all encompassing.
And that's a hard line to break from.
What you need is to bring the average joe reader or watcher in with catch phrases - hooks - something that will make them interested in the very beginning. A teaser. Something exciting. Something fun. Something that snags the reader in and makes them want to see the movie.
In a very SHORT amount of time.
Like the back of books.
Most of the time, the meat of the idea is in less than 2 paragraphs. It doesn't tell the whole story - but gives the reader the interest to open the pages and read to see the rest of the story.
Some movies will sell themselves based on the director or the actor/actress fame. Some will sell because they were a bestseller book.
In this case, Hilary Duff has a huge audience of fans. But a LOT of those fans are not old enough to see an "R" rated movie. However, a lot of older people will go to see Hilary Duff playing outside her common roles.
Personally I'd go see it because Molly Shannon is in it and I loved her in "SUPERSTAR". LMAO! She's a riot.
Yes - I would LOVE to review for you.
I'll send an email.

Polybore has officially entered with this video. Turn the volume of your speakers up.
polybore.blogspot.com/2009/05/what-goes-up-promotional-video-posted.html
Or miss out the terrible polybore blog and watch it direct on YouTube
www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbwuPTbDTus
High Definition version for YouTube is in the pipeline with improved audio. -
So, I'm curious about the space shuttle theme. I've seen it in the promo stills, and (after the intro to Polybore's video, especially) can't help but wonder how it fits. Is this a Space Camp classroom? Are they next to Cape Canaveral? The synopsis posted by WagerWitch above makes this sound like a cheesy rehash of a story line that's been done to death but the promotions are non-specific in the extreme.
Maybe I'll just focus on the music and let other people worry about that. I'm off to listen to Innocent Bystanders and some Bowie.-
The Challenger space shuttle tragedy simply provides a moment in time for the movie. Although, there is an interesting contrast between the teacher who dies (the one who teaches the misfits) and is swept under the carpet and the one who the town is preparing to celebrate. For the students, their hero wasn't going into space.
It's a very ambitious story. And, all of the lead and secondary characters have their own sub story lines. The early back channel comments from critics has been very promising. As one reviewer commented, they found themselves thinking about the movie the next day.
But yeah, focusing on the music is easier.
-
-
I get this leg - about the movie - from reading the blog, watching the trailer and reading the synopsis.
OK - from what I can understand of this movie:
You know the Space Shuttle that had the female teacher go on it? The one that all of them died in?
Anyhow the town of this "space" teacher... it's a very small town.
Everyone had their hopes, dreams and aspirations set on this teacher becoming an historic figure. A way to make the town famous, or perhaps even a way for it to earn money.
Unfortunately - the "space" teacher dies - hence all the hopes and dreams of the town rocketing into stardom and being placed on the map also die.
People get melancholy, the parents forget their children - and the children all grow up to become sort of "misfits" or rebellious dysfunctional teens.
In one specific class, the group of children have a male teacher - and for some reason, because the male teacher pays attention to them - they begin to hero-worship him. Unfortunately he dies - by suicide... With a lot of rumors surrounding his death - (like as in... was he sleeping with his student(s))... and the class becomes lost and even more dysfunctional. They act out in strange ways surrounding his death - and do bizarre things.
In the meantime, a columnist or writer comes to the town to do a story on the now dead teacher who went into space and who died.
Somehow the columnist while trying to write his story on the Challenger's teacher from this town meets up with the teens, and somehow he ends up being their new, reluctant teacher.
In a spree of time - I think the teens then start hero worshipping this new teacher - and he finds the dysfunctional kids very strange. But somehow begins to form close bonds with them and with some of the townspeople.
I think in the end --- it's about coming of age in a town where there is no hope left --- and the columnist gets a chance to observe how the town reawakens in the tragedy of the death of this space teacher who died and with her death, killed all the dreams of the people in the town... And now - they learn to move on with life.
That's the general idea I get from the concepts that I've read.
I'm assuming What Goes UP --- is directly in reference to the Space Shuttle...
and I'm assuming that this movie is probably a drama/almost real life --- with lots of comedy intermixed.
It will have a Hillary Duff New Single in it - so I think this is probably a way for Duff to break from the Lizzy McGuire reputation that she has been stuck in for so long and has been unable to break from as of yet.
I think this WILL be an interesting film to watch. It will teach a lot of life lessons and probably give us all an insight into small town gossip, life and even emotions.
PLEASE bear in mind - this is ONLY my OWN opinion.
The music tracks appear to be brilliant -- and I think that the acting will either make or break the movie.
Is this a cheesy rehash of every story line ever written?
It could be.
But I say leave your mind open to the possibility that this could be a fun, intriguing and thought provoking film.-
Nope.
The shuttle tragedy doesn't take place in the movie, not really.
The way Robert Lawson (one of the writers) framed up the song Any Other Day could be a fitting general concept for the film, paraphrased...
... You go along in life, you do what you need to do, you care about doing, and you think you can control it all. And then something happens to remind you just how not-in-control you are. So it throws you. But, in the end, that's okay anyway ...
There are several story lines in the movie about this subject. How does one person become a hero and another not, and to whom? How does perception change how we react with the world? Stuff like that, but it sounds a bit verbose to focus on it.
-
-
I dunno if that helped you leg --- but I thought I'd give it a whirl to try and break my understanding of it down.
keep in mind - I could be totally wrong. But that's what I get out of everything that I've seen and read.
WW-
You're sweet for trying to break it down. And I do love this ... "But I say leave your mind open to the possibility that this could be a fun, intriguing and thought provoking film."
Having seen the rough cut (not the final), I can say I didn't find it cheesy or a rehash at all. It's interesting throughout, with some moments better than others. The cast truly delivers. It's hard to grade it off the rough cut because some of odd things I saw were fixed for the theatrical.
Here's some initial feedback pro reviewers gave ...
“I really loved the film last night and am still thinking about it today. I was really curious about Hilary's performance and thought she was really good. I loved Olivia too.”
“I thought it was interesting to see a light film that deals with such heavy and dark issues. The kids are more intriguing that the journalist story.”
“The film is very beautifully made but kind of creepy.”
“I thought the film was very ambitious, and trying too hard. I think Hilary Duff may have some potential as an actress.”
“I thought it was a strange but charmingly interesting movie. I had a hard time at the beginning but the story quickly took life and the actors were enchanting.”

LMAO - those must be only small quips of the reviews. I don't think it's possible for me to write such a short group of sentences on ANYTHING - and definetely not about a movie review...
Verbosity is my middle initial. Just one of them.
LMAO!
WW
PS. Thanks Rich - I tried to break it down, but know that I don't know a hill of beans about the movie, except what is out there. But I do hope to be able to put in a helping hand in some way. -
Good. Laughter is important. Helping others is even more important.
Now - laughter and helping others mixed together - wow - that would be something.
One movie that affected me deeply - but bothered me so much that I can't watch it again (I'm a crybaby, HallMark commercial's make me blather like an idiot... ) is PAY IT FORWARD.
So if those reviews actually mean that the movie is inspirational or thought provoking, then that, is awesomely cool.
Cause I enjoy movies that are like that.

Please help keep this up at the top so that we can get some of our TALENT out...
Thank you.
We have a LOT of TALENT here.
Great people and good fun! -
Glad to see people are discussing...hopefully we'll get a lot of submissions and we can show the world that BC is a great place to come to engage a community and get results.
Remember that how the community responds to contests and opportunities we are currently providing can always have a big impact on what kind of challenges and opportunities we have a chance to bring you in the future! -
I can't even make a header for my blog, so untalented, I contracted it out to polybore, yeah I'm pathetic
-
Sorry. Not interested. Even if I were, my home town doesn't have a theatre to show it in. So worthless on several counts.
Doesn't mean the rest of you can't have fun, though. Break a leg! -
Ahhh vulpine - the point of the matter is - GET YOUR artwork OUT and Seen.
And - YOU WIN a package - which INCLUDES the movie on DVD.
Fun stuff - I'm telling you.
And Kat --- ya can do ANYTHING you set your mind to. Do you knit? Do you cook? Cook a cake and decorate it - take a picture of it... Knit a small pillow cover with the picture of the movie on it.
Anything and EVERYTHING works. -
Here's my submission - although - I enlarged it on BLOGGER so it's fuzzier than it REALLY is.
It is a BOOK COVER for the Book - when it publishes (LOL! - I'm thinking ahead)

I wish everyone the VERY best of Luck!
WW-
Quirky.... Cool Beans - I like that... I am a bit quirky so that fits right in with how I see myself. *GRIN*
Glad you like it - if you need it any other way, let me know. Always happy to help out.
Now if we can only get these folks the incentive to actually get off their "DUFFS" and do something to promote themselves!
-
Yo - does anyone like it?
Hey - how's Polybore's video coming along? Is it HD yet? Can we have a link?
And Friday -- where are those posters? hmmm? Dying to see them! I'll bet they're sexy-hawt!
And WebMoney --- you only dropped your link - I looked ALL over your blog for something relating to this movie --- SO Pony up Julius, I'm waiting... You said you were in *grin*.
Acoustic --- Whatcha thinkin? I'm excited to see what the red panda might show up with...
Leg - you finish up yet on anything? Come on darlin' know you got it in ya! I wanna know what kinda music thingie you're doing!
Anyone else? Peoples come on... time is a tickin' -
1. Must include BlogCatalog.com and What Goes Up in some way.
Does this part mean have BC as part of the design? My poster's finished, just have this little doubt. -
I'm creating a review blog - to put the book cover on - so the book cover is the only part of the contest that is here. I just haven't seen the movie yet, sigh - so I was holding out against the time... I may just have to fly it by the seat of the pants tonight or tomorrow.
It's all good.
But yeah - you could put the BC Logo on it - and VOILA! You've got it! -
*bump*
It's done!

Sorry for the delay. Hopefully the WGU people got my e-mail with the post containing the full-size version of this. Here it is for everyone else to see (and steal, etc.
): omarmodesto.wordpress.com/2009/05/18/going-up/

Well there you go guys - ANYONE ELSE?
Come on --- please tell me some of the rest of our Talented Folks out there are doing something???
Pretty please. -
OK - come on guys - there are only 2 more days... I think --- The 21st is the deadline.
YOU CAN DO IT! -
HD version of polybore's "What Goes Up" video cooked, done and dusted.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=38yH-9_LyYI
Click HD button. Turn the volume up.
Thanks to Friday13 for the almost end credits image. -
COME on you guys --- YOU CANNOT let my measly throw up book cover be in the TOP 3 --- Only because there are 3 entries.
-
Oh boy -- Fri - I'll put you and Poly in the top 2... and that makes me #3...
WOOHOO - do you realize - I've NEVER won ANYTHING before?
I don't win...
I just don't have that kind of luck.
In fact - I tend to just sizzle and fade at contests... LOL!
But --_ I have EVER been a dreamer - and I have EVER dreamed that I could win the BIG ONE!
Cool beans man - maybe by default... just this once... LOL! -
Guys - YOU WILL BE SOOOOOO VERY SORRY that you did not participate in this.
You have so much talent amongst all of you - and I'm sooooo very curious to know WHY you did not participate?
This is an EVENT - not just a silly CONTEST.
You all should be well aware of the possibilities.
I hope you all are just making us sweat - and not just not entering because you don't believe in yourselves.
Come on peoples --- I HAVE SEEN YOUR ART...
You ARE talented.
Get a little motivation and get it in.
There isn't much to work with yet --- so GET creative.
But I promise you this: If you could have entered, but you didn't because of self doubt - YOU WILL BE KICKING YOURSELF in the end. -
To a group of people who worked so hard
The fans screaming across the yard
I watched the team create and share
Each person giving so much care
I watched in awe the marketing unfold
And wondered why the artists got cold
Because there is such a chance
A fate's calling you out to dance
A feather tickle here and there
I don't understand how they couldn't care
So I try to show each the path
The way to learn - to do the math
So simple I say - just put it up
And you could win the golden cup
Alas, they are afraid of it all
and in the end - their art will fall
Such a chance, I've rarely seen
And such talent, I've turned envy green
But I will see regrets and more
When the winners come out the door
I'll wish you had joined, your talent great
But this my friends, is your decided fate
So I'll watch this movie with glee
And enjoy the talent and people I see
I'll sit in awe of the group that made it so
And realize that there's one thing I know
The door was opened, and I peeked inside
Because in the end - there's nothing to hide
I'll wish you were here - in all your glory
But in the end - I'll enjoy the story -
Today is the last day to enter. As a reminder ... the winning work will be shown at the premiere, which includes having your work seen by the filmmakers, their friends, and the executives of Sony.
Good luck. And thanks to everyone who has already entered. -
Rich - you're awful kind.
And -- just as a side note:
Rich runs a very outstanding business... Bringing words, concepts and strategies together.
On top of that, Rich... and I believe his Wife - are outstanding Role Model Citizens who give back a TON to their environment and their communities.
If that isn't enough to give this guy a tremendous round of applause, I do not know what possibly could be enough.
I'd like to thank Rich for his participation in this whole entire situation, and for bringing this promotion to BlogCatalog, allowing all of us to participate. I'm saddened at the lack of participation - because I would have thought HORDES of artists would have been involved... just on the hopes of getting their foot in the door.
Unfortunately - there wasn't a lot of people involved.
Which leads me to believe that people just do not believe in themselves the way that they should.
And Rich - you took the time to introduce this to the community here - because you, too, believed in them.
I hope that you give the BlogCatalog people a second chance at this - and we can support you better next time... If you can.
Again - I thank you for your efforts, both on the boards and off the boards.
You guys wouldn't find a nicer team than the WGUInsider team. Totally down to earth folks - who are real, caring, considerate people - just like you and I.
And they truly ARE interested in Artists, Fans and the like.
All of them.
So - it has been MY pleasure to have been introduced to all of you in this manner.
WagerWitch -

Agg ggggg g--- I'm going to have to go to sleep soon...
Poly - have you got your speech ready yet?
And you FRiday - you got yours?
I'm so proud of you two!
And AG - I am so glad you'll get mentions - that was hilarious.
Y'all - just be proud to be artists - I'm way proud of you.
WW-
Yep a speech --- A big - LONG - speech! *grin*
Are you nervous yet?
I'm like walking on pins and needles.. I made myself go to sleep...
Cause You and Poly are like the top folks, I mean - I dunno what everyone else entered - but you guys are like awesome... And I hope you guys have your speeches and I'm sooooo proud of you!
