Blogger Unite for World AIDS Day on December 1st

Topics: aids.gov, bloggersunite, nida, world aids day 2008
On December 1st, bloggers from around the world will unite for World AIDS Day 2008. Worldwide an estimated 33 million people are living with HIV. In the United States, an estimated one million Americans are living with HIV. In response, both the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) www.nida.nih.gov/ and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of HIV/AIDS Policy’s AIDS.gov came to BloggersUnite and asked us to come together to share HIV/AIDS information with the blogging community for World AIDS Day 2008.
Please join us on December 1st in recognition of World AIDS Day 2008. NIDA and AIDS.gov are working with Bloggers Unite because we value and recognize the power of a voice. Multiply that voice by the thousands and the sound of humanity will echo the blogosphere. HIV/AIDS affects too many in our communities to ignore. Be a part of a growing community of leaders that lift their voices.
Together, we can reduce the stigma of this pandemic through our words, voices and actions.

I'm willing to rant about the churches that preach abstinence in Africa if you consider my rant "helping the cause."
-
AIDS.gov and NIDA have been amazing at providing and creating resources for bloggers to use on our blogs.
Here are some resources
* NIDA has put together a number of webisodes with some great blog content explaining the link between drug abuse and AIDS. They are encouraging us to embed these videos into our blog posts.
www.youtube.com/user/NIDANIH
* AIDS.gov has created a terrific Podcast about the event www.aids.gov/podcast/bloggers_unite/bloggersunite_podcast_play.html
* Read AIDS.gov's post about the Power of Bloggers digg.com/health/The_Power_of_Blogs_Bloggers_Unite_on_World_AIDS_Day

I'll be delighted to write a post that focuses on the fact that between 170 - 190 million American federal taxpayers dollars (faith based funding) are being spent in the USA every year on teaching teens ineffectual abstinence only programs, rather than on comprehensive sex education programs focused on abstinence, preventing STDs and preventing unwanted pregnancies. I've already done the research and I have a collection of quotes I can use.

AIDS.gov has posted about joining up with the bloggers of BloggersUnite
Read the post here blog.aids.gov/2008/11/the-power-of-bl.html
and leave a comment, if you feel inclined.-
Thanks TT
NIDA and AIDS.org asking the bloggers of blogcatalog & bloggersunite to participate in World AIDS day is a testament to the positive impact the past BU initiatives have had. Out of everything that the BlogCatalog team and BlogCatalog community do, BloggersUnite is the thing I am most grateful for.
-
Finally, a BloggersUnite topic that I actually know a little bit about and can very easily relate to the topic of my blog!

Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!
Now ... need to find those widget codes. I searched but there wasn't a pointy finger to show me the way. Hmm ... perhaps Tony will help me. -

-
I did write a post today about widgets and this Dec 1st cause. However, a few minutes later I wrote a rant post. Just to let you know there is a difference and change in my morning mood. I shouldn't read the news.

That is a GREAT cause and one that is close to my heart. In the 1980's, living in San Francisco, I went to almost 20 funerals in one year--I lost so many of my friends to AIDS. I know it is a worldwide problem as well but I am so happy to contribute to that cause.

I made a post today, and wanted to forward the link:
imoralist.blogspot.com/2008/11/whatever-happened-to-day-without-art.html
Last week I received an email from the Getty Museum listing their activities for December, which included events in conjunction with World AIDS Day, December 1. After checking out some other L.A. museum's calendars, I saw that the Getty was the only one that had events listed. I can remember ten or fifteen years ago when it seemed that every museum or gallery had something happening on "A Day Without Art."
This got me to think that the blog-o-sphere would be an ideal way to resurrect the tradition. I thought about some of my artist friends who died before the advent of the internet, and how little of their work or lives are represented online.
To remedy that situation, and to mark "A Day Without Art," I'll be posting a short tribute to a former CalArts classmate and video artist. I thought it would be a great idea if I could get other bloggers to post on December 1 anything they'd like on artists they admire who died of AIDS.
Since Blog Catalog is read by so many other bloggers, I thought it would be an ideal place to pass along the word.
Thanks,
Michael -

Okay, all right. I was considering joining this when it was first announced, but then I had no idea what I was gonna say besides AIDS sucks (well, it does), so I stayed away for a while.
And so, today, not long after midnight, I began writing a post that was just going to be a couple of images and two lines of text. But it quickly turned into something else and, well, for better or worse, here's my post:
Game of lights

I also added a badge and registered (to BU) just a while ago. Sorry for taking so long to decide

World AIDS Day 2008: Bloggers Unite
thistimethisspace.com/2008/12/01/world-aids-day-2008-bloggers-unite/
World AIDS Day 2008: Bloggers Unite
A post that focuses on the fact that between 170 - 190 million American federal taxpayers dollars (faith based funding) are being spent in the USA every year on teaching teens ineffectual abstinence only programs, rather than on comprehensive sex education programs focused on abstinence, preventing unwanted pregnancies, and preventing STDs, including HIV AIDS.
IMO it’s appalling that one third of American parents of teens would choose only to support teaching abstinence to them and then pat themselves on the back for being “righteous” in a religious sense. Their failure to provide their own children with comprehensive sex education, including contraception and protection from STDs, such as HIV AIDS is unconscionable. Even more unconscionable is that fact that this ignorance in the form of “faith based abstinence only programs” is being exported to countries like Africa where AIDS is rampant.

I just wrote my last article on HIV/AIDS as a part of My AIDS campaign 2008 series.
Read it here:

There are other articles as well - just click the HIV tag on the side. -

I managed to work one into my genre, and learn about a fantastic opportunity to give money for AIDS treatment in Africa while getting free music. It took me all of five seconds to find the topic, because it launches today. not-pop-jukebox.blogspot.com/2008/12/world-aids-day.html
-
I also dugg the AIDS.gov blog post and bookmarked it at ma.gnolia, while I was at it. I meant to do that days ago and forgot all about it.
