Questions for discussion:

Are bloggers all a bunch of dorks?

Do they start blogs because nobody will listening to their dorky blathering in the real world?

Should they be permitted to pass on their dork genes to future generations?

Note: these are just questions for discussion. They're not meant to be controversial or offend any anybody or anything like that.

This is part of my first blogpost:

"For Christmas I was given a fridge magnet that read: ‘Everyone is entitled to my opinion’, which I took to be an indication that, at least in my family’s eyes, I am a highly opinionated person, with no interest in keeping my ideas to myself. So perhaps this journal will not only serve to alleviate my boredom, but also that of anyone who may otherwise have been at the end of one of my rants."

    so...yes!
  2. Arcticulates
After I thoughtfully considered the original meaning of the word *Dork*... I have decided that my answer is No!
    1. siralmo
      very good i like that
    2. Agit8r
      good catch!

      OP just wishes
  3. elitethinker
It's easier to have a conversation with people in the real world, but blogging is more for keeping notes for self also.
  4. PetLvr
I think bloggers would lean towards the geeky side - versus the dorky side. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTXyXuqfBLA
    1. Jaybetee
and I would say embrace and celebrate the geekiness
  5. rfburnhertz
    I'm with PetLvr.
    More geek than dork.
  6. MissSuzie
I have no problem being called a dork...a very bitchy and opinionated dork. People seem to like that about me.
  7. roentarre
This is a dangerous statement you are making.

I would avoid generalisation if I were you.
    1. drjay1966
      ummm...okay...won't do it again...
  8. vallywon
    Maybe.. I'm dorky 8)
  9. legbamel
Geeky dorks, yes. Otherwise, we'd just have diaries.
  10. pinkmonkeychatter
I think of myself as more of a nerd than a dork. Nerd sounds much smarter.
  11. nothingprofound
Bloggers are all different, like everyone else. I'm totally cool, wise, and happy, so I definitely don't fit into the dork category.
  12. Floormodel
I may be slightly dorkish with geeklike tendencies. Luckily the people around me think it's okay.
    1. jan4insight
      I'm with you, floormodel
  13. Stillthinking
Of course we're dorks! That's why people smirk when we tell them we have a blog at all.
  14. polybore
"Do they start blogs because nobody will listening to their dorky blathering in the real world?"

Wow, that should be the profile description for polybore.
  15. Agit8r
sadly, I work with psychos who actually listen to my blatherings... and spin off them into their own blathering 0_o
  16. cookingasshole
    I would go with 'Losers'
    1. gtally
Or knuckleheads, ding-a-lings and Goofy Goobers.
    2. gtally
"Dime bags?" What exactly are you doing, cookinga$$hole?
    3. cookingasshole
how do you know what a dime bag is?

      Junkie
    4. gtally
I watched a lot of after-school specials in the 80s.

And Nancy Reagan taught me everything I know about drugs.
    5. cookingasshole
plus dime bags are for poor people...can't you just buy an ounce like a normal, decent, and civilized person?
    6. gtally
Oh my goodness no. I don't do that sort of thing! You're a very bad monkey for bringing it all up, tho. Next thing you know, you'll be so far gone, you'll be hallucinating and talking to plastic doll heads from New York City.
    7. cookingasshole
I actually meant "douche bags." You are the one that turned it into drugs!

      Must follow doll!
    8. gtally
Hmmm. I know that phrase, my bespectacled simian friend. Mother used to say it to me all the time. Which reminds me, it's Mother's Day, so I should let Mother out of the cupboards for her monthly walk about and airing out.
    9. cookingasshole
      I already called my mom.
      you better get on it!
    10. gtally
Shhh! I'm stalling. Same as always.
    11. Agit8r
      gnome fetishists!
    12. cookingasshole
Now I have a major aversion to gnomes...
  17. ThriftShopRomantic
I've always been a writing nerd. Now at least I have an audience for my nerdity.
  18. BetsyIckes
I think a lot of us have all this useless knowledge bottled up in us and if we don't let any of it out we will explode!

No really, I think that we know that there is more to life then sitting in front of the TV, playing video games and going shopping. We just like to pass onto others information.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Gosh, Betsy, you make it sound all... empowering. Like we all actually know what we're doing-- I like it.
    2. BetsyIckes
For the most part we do!
  19. xmarks
I fit equally into "dork" and "geek"
  20. Agit8r
    I prefer the term "Nerd"
    1. xmarks
      I also fit into "nerd"

      I don't have a preference . . . . well cool jock would have been nice but . . . . .
    2. Agit8r
yeah, fate is cruel like that
  21. DollinNYC
I'll have to agree with cooking asshole on this one re:douchebags. Which reminds me - Gtally were you attempting to insult me by calling me a plastic doll head?
    1. cookingasshole
      what a d-bag
    2. DollinNYC
Thank you for defending me ! dime bags LOL how 1980's.
    3. cookingasshole
I know! that never even crossed my mind...
    4. nothingprofound
Anybody got a d-bag for sale... the 1980s kind?
    5. DollinNYC
Maybe Gtally can hook you up - he seems to know about these things...
    6. cookingasshole
      @NP
I got your d-bag right here baby
    7. cookingasshole
I bet you gtally's inn is just a cover for his dimebag operation
    8. DollinNYC
yah - isn't he in Detroit?
    9. nothingprofound
The Feds will be right over to pick it up.
    10. cookingasshole
HAHA! No, Colorado, but I hear the street level dime bags are not too bad there. Thanks gtally!
    11. cookingasshole
      @NP
make sure they rap on the door three times. That is my code knock for the junkies.
    12. DollinNYC
yes- if you manage not to get shot in the process (Detroit).
    13. cookingasshole
      oh I meant colorado...screw detroit
  22. DollinNYC
That doesn't even make sense! "Bloggers area bunch of dime-bags"
    1. cookingasshole
it could mean bloggers are cheap and lowbrow...
    2. DollinNYC
or it could mean they only ever bought dirtweed from guys on the street!
    3. cookingasshole
or that they are mediocre to crappy quality.
    4. gtally
DollinNYC -- I kid, I kid! Who says I was ever serious about anything? And of course I know the difference. Peace to the monkey; peace be to the doll.
    5. cookingasshole
      meanie pants
    6. gtally
But I am off to write a nasty, unhinged blog post about you, monkey, like that brains fellow did.
    7. DollinNYC
Don't forget your dime bag !
    8. cookingasshole
      hippy

      that guy has no brains
    9. gtally
He had brains, I just thought they were made of blue Jello. By the way, steamed artichokes, with either mayo or melted butter, are my favorites. Do you ever eat the heart?
    10. DollinNYC
I am tempted to try them the way cooking asshole makes them!- they look yummy!
      cookingforassholes.blogspot.com/2009/05/braised-artichoke.html
    11. cookingasshole
you HAVE to eat the heart...that is the cash money of the artichoke!
    12. nothingprofound
The gods feast on nectar and artichoke hearts. Artichoke hearts are awesome.
  23. Sam1982
    my mum thinks I'm cool
  24. drjay1966
Hey, folks this is a serious topic, and is of great social and political import.

    Quit the goofin' around.....
    1. cookingasshole
we wern't doing anything! We swear!
  25. ZyberDon
What an enlightenment! I seems to agree with you- you're right! Finally someone said it! Oh, I'm so happy!
  26. ZyberDon
Although, BetsyIckes had her point, too!
    1. cookingasshole
I got Cool History / Lit Geek
    2. crpitt
      I am cooler
    3. cookingasshole
      no way!
      the test was flawed!
    4. crpitt
      Tis a perfect test!

      Go play with your lit...
  27. exit2013
I blog so i can have an alibi! Seriously!
    1. cookingasshole
      haha! Loser.
  28. Lpe04
I would say there is a balance to be maintained. By 'Bloggers' I assume you mean the hard-core bloggers and not the occasional poster.

Some may be in it for the money.... just saying.
    1. cookingasshole
nerd alert...this is not a drill
    2. crpitt
How do you dress in the morning with such a high dork score? Clown shoes per chance?
    3. Agit8r
you really never did read any part of my blog... or you would have figured that out sooner
    4. cookingasshole
you need more pictures...like diagrams explaining stuff
    5. Agit8r
I think it docked me for not caring about the I-phone. Also, how rigged was the "naked" question. seriously

Also i may have lost points for being so anal about sock holes
    6. crpitt
"you really never did read any part of my blog" Nope
    7. Agit8r

      ' ' '
    8. Floormodel
I scored too high on a few, quirky test. I only knew some of the tech stuff because I have a close friend who talks so much about it that I accidently started to understand it all.
    1. Stillthinking
      Please, like this surprises anyone.

I saw Star Trek on opening night and was obsessed with Battlestar Galactica.
    2. Agit8r
shouldn't an architect have higher math scores? just sayin...
    3. Stillthinking
Hey! I am very bright in math thank you.
    4. gtally
Ignore her, Agit8r. She's not royalty like me.
    5. Agit8r
i guess they average it out w/ science
    6. Stillthinking
I took 2 years of calculus, 1 year of physics and 2 years of building science. I am good at math and science.
    7. Agit8r
the extent of still's scientific knowledge is appearently the techno-babble they throw into the Star Trek script
    8. Stillthinking
None of the buildings I have worked on have fallen down thank you.
    9. Agit8r
      yet...

just giving you crap. I'm sure you know your science just fine
    10. Stillthinking
Though I did work on the Dallas Cowboys practice stadium. That was a freak accident of nature though. We're not required to design for freak accidents like microbursts.
    11. Agit8r
      did you really?
    12. Stillthinking
      No, I didn't.

      Or did I? (o_O)
    13. Agit8r
And here I thought I knew a celebrity
    14. cookingasshole
      Cowboys suck! Go Redskins!
    15. Agit8r
      under the circumstances, pretty harsh
    1. Stillthinking
Why does yours look different? I would like to see the breakdown please.
    2. gtally
Where do I find it? I don't see the other option.
    3. Stillthinking
It's all the way at the bottom of the page, unless you went to a different page.
    4. gtally
Oh, I took 1.0, not 2.0. How nerdy of me..
    5. Stillthinking
      Retake it my nerdy friend.
    6. cookingasshole
LOL!!! All hail the nerd king!
    7. gtally
So if I average version 1.0 and 2.0, I suppose that puts me in about the middle, right?

      Right?
    8. gtally
Yes, bow before me, my little Nerdlings!
    9. cookingasshole
      sorry nerd king
    10. gtally
The odd thing is, I used to jokingly describe myself as "King of the Nerds" in high school. I was popular and able to move from group to group with ease, but all my closest friends were decidedly nerdy.
    11. cookingasshole
I would fall into that same category but I would never every refer to myself as King of the Nerds just because that is freaking nerdy
    12. Stillthinking
Wow, how did you get nerd king when I think I am decidedly more obsessed with sci-fi than you are. Oh, I don't have anything to do with comic books though, so that may have affected my score.

Well, must be going for the night. Settling in with a Fat Tire and Gossip Girl.
    13. gtally
      (Sheepishly)

I do own several graphics novels, so I think that put me over the top.
    14. drjay1966
Hell, just using the term "graphic novels" instead of "big thick comic books" puts you over the top....
    15. gtally
The Nerd King shall have you executed forthwith for your comic book blasphemy!
  29. gtally
85% scored lower than me for science fiction, 61% scored lower than me for computers/technology and 88% scored lower than me for history/literature. I expect all of you to start referring to me as "Your Majesty."
    1. Agit8r
i think that the test is full of poop
    2. gtally
      Commoner.
    3. Agit8r
it didn't measure trivia/general knowledge (unless it factored the Jeopardy bit into the Dumb/Dork/Awkward score)
  30. nothingprofound
I took the test and scored so high in the totally cool column, I was embarrassed to show the results to a bunch of nerds.
    1. nothingprofound
By the way Nerd King, I want to tell you-your franchise's fries really suck!
    1. nothingprofound
      Now there's two of us!!!
    2. gtally
No way, you both must bow down before the Nerd King!
    3. Stillthinking
Those results just mean they're not not interesting. Cool is code for shallow.
    4. nothingprofound
      Hence my moniker: nothing profound.
    5. cookingasshole
no luck in the avatar department?
    6. nothingprofound
      @Cook: Nope. Failed miserably again.
    7. ArsenicCookies
Hmm... I think if they had more art oriented questions I would be an uber nerd, I am just more into creativity than logic I suppose.
    8. Stillthinking
I think as writers, most of us are into creativity. I am a very right brain oriented person. All about creative thinking. That is why I am an architect. I also write, sing, draw, paint, take photographs. I played the violin and piano. I acted in high school and college.

I just happen to also be kind of dorky because I am also very introspective and somewhat introverted.

It's not about logic, taking an interest in history and science fiction is about fascination with the world around you and having very intense imaginations.

Plus, this test was just for fun and my comment about shallow was a joke.
    9. nothingprofound
@stillthinking: If being introspective and creative makes one dorky, then what are the assets of a non-dork?
    10. Stillthinking
These are high school labels anyway. Does it really matter? I always thought of cool as someone who navigates social situations very gracefully. Someone who naturally attracts people to them. A natural extrovert.
    11. ArsenicCookies
      @ stillthinking- I knew it was a joke, I wasn't offended.
  31. onceafortnight
Bloggers are essential to a free society. We give Google AdSense a reason to exist.
    1. drjay1966
Well Google Adsense sure isn't giving me a reason...I think I'm still about three years from my first check....
  32. timethief
Question: Are bloggers all a bunch of dorks?
    Answer: No

      Science/Math 47%
      Technology/Computer 71%
      SciFi/Comic 39%
      History/Literature 92%
      Dumb/Dork.Awkward 2%
      Uber Cool High Nerd
    1. nothingprofound
Now there's THREE of us, nerd kings!

    you tell me....
  34. hellomonkey
Yes, I reckon we're all a load of dorks personally. Well I certainly am!
  35. acousticguitarist
Yes to most of the questions
  36. legendarytoby
NOOOOOO. Most people blog for fun. I blog. You blog. It doesn't make us dorky. We're blogging because we want to broadcast our life to the world. It feels good to know, that someone you don't know at all is reading and is interested in your stuff.
  37. legbamel

I don't have to marry any of you nerd kings, do I? Because hubby would be so upset.
  38. inbusiness
I think the answer depends really on the reason for starting a blog - my reason is money based so would not categorise myself as a dork, however, if this is a persons only outlet in life and they do blogging for fun, then perhaps it could be questionable!!
  39. lukejones
There is a huge chunk of people who work out of their home and earn money while blogging.

I am also a part of that community. I dont think all these ppl including me are "dorks".

    1. Agit8r
      get an avatar already!
    2. legbamel
Some of these people definitely are dorks.
    3. crpitt
I raise your 'some' to 'a bloody lot'.
  40. rainyz
    I'm definitely a dork. Yes, a proud dorky nerd-girl!
  41. VampireFaust
What's wrong with being a dork?
  42. MidwestMom
Apparently, according to the test, I'm a "Slightly Dorky Nerd"...

NerdTests.com says I'm a Slightly Dorky Nerd. Click here to take the Nerd Test, get nerdy images and jokes, and talk to others on the nerd forum!

    ... so I guess there's you're answer, DrJay...
  43. exit2013
    Nerds of the world unite!
  44. Waltsense
I am handsome and very cool. But also a dork in the fact I can build a website. So I would say yes and no.
  45. davedol
YES, we are dorks! Instead of spending time with live people doing real things, we are here posting comments. DORK DORK!
  46. edgecrosser
depends on the blogger and his blog
