Every year, 20 million babies are born too soon, too small and very sick ― half a million of them in the United States. November 17 is when we fight.
On November 17th 2009, BloggersUnite.org will be partnering with the March of Dimes in sponsoring the Fight for Preemies event. For more information on the event or to sign up to participate go to: http://www.bloggersunite.org/event/fight-for-preemies
On this day we ask bloggers to blog about:
- the rising numbers of premature babies that are born across the globe each year,
- the doctors and researchers who help these children survive and avoid long term medical conditions,
- the research aimed at helping medical professionals provide better care for these babies,
- vital programs that provide education and support for parents
- and advocates that help educate the public about this health crisis.
Premature birth is a health crisis that jeopardizes the lives and health of nearly half-million babies each year. It is the #1 killer of newborns and can lead to lifelong disabilities. Worse: the number has increased 31 percent since 1981. It can happen without warning and for no known reason. Until we have more answers, anyone’s baby, could be born too soon.
Do you know a baby that was born too soon, too small, unable to suck, unable to breathe on his own?

BloggersUnite.org has submitted a pitch for a story titled "A Tale of Two Births: Differences in Prenatal Care" on a site called spot.us where you raise money for a journalist to research and write a story that is of interest to the community.
What we want to know is: What is the level of care received by women of various geographic and diverse income levels.
You can read more about it spot.us/pitches/282
So far $440 of the $650 has been raised to pay for a journalist to do this. Check it out when you have a chance. It's a cool site and an interesting way to get news stories reported on that interest you. -

I have never had a preemie so to speak. I was full term when I had my son but he was only 5 lbs and spent his first two months in the NICU, most of it on a ventilator. He was born with a very rare form of MD and had to be suctioned roughly every hour as his muscles were too weak to even do something as simple as swallow... so I understand what it's like to live that life ..
I'd be happy to help out in anyway that I can.
