Some people seem to make a lot of money through blogging. Others hardly make any. Is it really that easy to make money through blogging? How do you go about it? If you don't make money or not much money, is blogging a waste of time then? Maybe, you care to share some tips.

I think it all depends on what you blog about and why. Also how much money you actually want to make?
-
If you're banking on blogging as a big payoff, Crpitt there is right-- it depends a lot on your own blog and your monetary goals.
I'd say I'm deriving a lot of non-monetary rewards from blogging:
--As a writer, I want to have my work read. And I'm having that happen every single day through the blog. Real readers who even take the time to send me a note when they see something that strikes them. I love that. How else would I have this opportunity?
--I've gotten to learn so much from other people who blog, or who have overlapping interests and share them. It's allowed me to connect with people around the world. It's a great learning experience.
--Writing the blog and being consisten is challenging and is a great exercise for creating better, stronger posts. The more you write, the better you get.
Just my perspective on some of the benefits, anyway. -
Blogging and money are two things that are coming together as we speak. The blogger influence is growing like a weed it's on the new every day. The news even takes advise from bloggers on what stories are worth their time and what not to air.
But you see if you came to blogging just to make money then forget it.
If you came to blogging to put out the best content that You can, and truly want to help people learn or be entertained. Then over time they will see you has a trusted adviser and that's when they will ask You for sound advise and all you need to do is have what they need from a reliable source who you trust.
also think about getting traffic from good content and renting links by the month like on www.commercialdrivertraing.blogspot.com look at the best way driving school they pay me 25.00 a month.
And lets not forget about being sponsored this winter is the second year of sponsorship on www.snowboardingschool.blogspot.com
I'm here if you need me and feel free to leave comments on blogs.
Also see www.payperpost.com-
Actually many blogs that came about for the sole purpose of making money do just that very well. And they also do the other things you mention. Why? Because that *IS* how one makes money. With blogs, with books, with cars, with plumbing services...
You make money by providing a product or service that people value more than the money in their pocket.
Whether your original goal is to make money or not, the path is the same, but if you come into it for that purpose and follow sound business policies you are much more likely to get there because you are focused on *both* providing value and making a return.
Shorting either of these will result in not being able to make money from any venture, blogging included. -
Thank you, DaneMorgan.
I'm hoping that, sooner or later (preferably sooner) one or more of my blogs will start getting traffic in the volume it seems to take to make money on advertising. Or, that I find something that makes money on lower traffic.
Oh, well. Meanwhile, it's back to producing content. -
I read that you can increase your traffic by joining blogcatalog, bloglog, etc. Don't know how true that is but you have joined blogcatalog, I see. Do visit other blogs and leave comments there, inviting them over. I don't think that should be called spam at all. What else can you do to get people to notice?
-
-
Most people don't make any money. The ones that make the most have blogs on how to make money blogging. You gotta blog because you want to really. I read it takes about a year to get good traffic to your blog. So after 12 months of hard work, you will probably know if your blog will be popular or not.
-
It depends on your goals really. Some people are happy making a few extra dollars, some are trying to get rich and some like myself, aren't trying to make any.. well at least not yet, maybe if I get uber famous one day...

Let's spread some happiness not confined to a particular region. Blogging is a good platform to doing that. www.limeehai.com

Blogging is a TOTAL WASTE of time...
But I can't help it.
I love my blog.
right now I should be studying viral hepatitis, and I am tempted to update my blog... -
Adsense rejected me, so no I can't make any money off of it. I don't have a large audience either.
But I didn't start blogging to make money. I started blogging to share my story with the world anonymously.-

I blog mainly because I enjoy doing it. Making money from my blogging is like a much welcomed bonus. When ever anyone spends time doing something they enjoy doing it is never a waste time. So I guess the answer to your question is it really depends on the motive and intent of the blogger.
I'm not sure what type of tips you're interested in, but my tip is simply be honest and genuine.

I once had a friend who would introduce me me as a, "blogger, a web designer, a..." and it just felt nice. When I am getting to know someone, I'll forward them my blog URL and web site URL and it's kind of a nice way to say, "This is who I am and yes, I share it w/ the World."
Being a blogger makes me go out and do some things that I might not ordinarily bother with, for fodder or just because doing something different gives me insight, sometimes.
I enjoy it more than I even thought I would.
Occasionally, someone will send me feedback about my blog and it's gratifying. -
no i dont make a lot of money from blogging a few cents some days but i dont think blogging is a waste of time! i hv a lot of fun writing and most of all meeting new people!
-
I'm not really looking to make money from my blog...I just like writing. If I get a couple pennies from it, that's nice too.
-
Do what you love. Forget about $ (not totally mind you). Just have fun and the rest will fall into place! I visited John Chow's website and frankly did not "get" why he was making so much $$. His content didn't interest me at all! But - I am sure he is enjoying doing whatever it is that is floating that blog!
If you love what you are doing, you will work harder at making it work. And once it works, you don't have to cause the money will flow to you like Niagara Falls down Niagara river (that's my personal quote by the way! LOL!!) -
i don't really wanna make much money from my site, just enough to cover hosting expenses ($30) a soda ($.75) and a bag of chips ($.50), of course I am trying to do this with adsense which would only pay me when I get to $100, so I get I can include some kind of video game in there too.
-
-
I didn't even realize people made money from blogging, I just do it to write and for fun. But a lot of people here seem to do it for the moula. Perhaps I should look into this. I actually think of blogging as a hobby not an income.
-
I blog just because I like to blog and share the things I find.... Do I make money? A little but certainly not enough to equal the time I put into it. I do however make money on the internet through various things but I mostly just blog to share those things with others. If I make a little extra cash in the process... great... if I don't, that's ok too.
-
well i could be doing other things, but i like to write. its therapeutic for me, so nope, it's not a total waste of time.
my friends like to read my posts, so we have a good laugh. makes us all feel better. -
My blog does not have any advertisements at all. My average traffic is about 2 per day. If my blog were a business, it would be bankrupt by now
However, I continue to do it for the pure enjoyment of it. Blogging has given me a creative outlet to express my thoughts and showcase my photography. I am amazed when I hear people say that their blogs have over 100 unique visitors a day. I would be lying if I said that I didn't want more traffic to my blog. However, I still feel like I've accomplished something when people read my blog, even if they happened to stumble upon it.-
Yeah doing what you enjoy is very important because the funny thing is that when you do what you enjoy, the money come to you. As for blog at www.SBOAcademy.com, I do not do much advertising also but I enjoy sharing tips with other people.

Listen to this: You Will NOT Make Money Online

Hi Footiam,
I think it really depends on what's the purpose of your blog. Why are you blogging? Is it to make money? Or is it for other kinds of satisfaction? Many people blog for pure self-expression and connecting with others.
But if you're interested to make money from blogging, then you must treat it as a business and have a plan etc. I just posted a FREE special report by an extremely successful blogger who made over $10,000 last month. In the special report he shares how he monetize his blog so he can work only about 2hours a day while earning 'full-time' income. You can grab the special report here: http:www.santqiu.com
Enjoy it! -
Read lots of replies on your post. When I first started blogging, it was for money but now its my habit to express myself through blogging the issues with most impressed me, I put my views through blogging. It satisfied you then you have a platform to express yourself. And that's real blogging is. You can visit my blogs at:

I am earning enough through my day job (civil engineer / programmer / PhD - research assistant) so my site/blog is a place to unwind , write and discuss about my hobbies and various technology related projects - experiments I am currently involved in and to meet similarly minded people and exchange views about many things.
My adsense earnings … forget it - are barely covering the $1.99 / month hosting bill - I basically don’t care for profits just want the site to be self sufficient.
Yes it is possible to make money from blogging but it takes lot of hard work and time!
There are no secret / special reports - tricks etc that can replace the long term traffic increase a high quality blog will get.
After hitting the 10ths of thousands visitors / month things change though, since you can get access to specialized advertising products!
My best regards! -
Sure. It's a waste of time if it inflicts misery on your life. Otherwise, how can anything you enjoy be a waste of time? That's one of the problems with our society. We don't value enjoyment. Instead we value money. So everyone forgoes the things that would make life worth living to make more money and work longer hours. Then everyone wonders why their lives seem so empty, unfulfilled, and unhappy.
-
So true Fiar, we see blogging as a good use of our time, a way to reach / inspire / entertain others and hey, if they buy flowers through our site all well and good - if not - no worries - it's a hobby not THE reason to be....

I blog because I really enjoy what I'm discussing. I put alot of time and effort into it by doing research and writing to my best abilities because I would like for other people to enjoy it as well and become frequent readers, and yes to also make a little money. But the funny thing is my blog has been up for about a week and I've only made about $10 and I work like 12 hours a day on the thing and I love it! Where as at my day job I make much more a day,but can't stand to be here 8 hours.
-
I blog on free platforms and don't try to make money. Nonetheless, it is not a waste of time.
Even if you are trying to make money, and don't, you will still learn something along the way. is that a waste of time? Over the long haul you might even figure out a way to make money. -
-
You can make oodles of cash from blogging. You just need to put time, effort and hard work in like any business.

A waste of time if you make no money, no friend from it. Right now I'm feeling that way... I wish everyone who visit my blog would put a comment there... so sad i barely get one.
-
I started blogging with the hope that it can earn me some pocket money that hopefully will grow and grow. But after blogging sometime, and trying to find good content to fill the site, I slowly find that I am upgrading my knowledge. The feeling is very special and unique. The satisfaction is hard to describe when you are able to share your knowledge with others and others taking the trouble to have a look and even replying with good comments. This emotional touch cannot be exchanged for money.

if you want to learn how to make money from blogging check out this site,
mastersofseo.com they give great tips -
Some people want a homestead, others want a shop, and like DanMorgan suggests, you can have both. I wanted a homestead. After spending hours at work on the computer and researching on the web, I wanted to come 'home' to something far from all the web's hustle & bustle, city lights, barking dogs, honking horns, and heavy traffic.
From time to time, someone comes by the homestead, spends some time and leaves; some leave pleased. And sometimes the nomad in me says, 'you're not a homesteader, move on, go explore places others have yet to know'. But I resist for now. Been thinking opening a shop may be a good challenge.
So I see blogging based on aims. Homesteading or shopkeeping. Or both. One looks for satisfaction, the other looks for success. Or both. And blogging is only a waste of time if you don't achieve your aim or aims, as the case may be.
Bloggers, what would our lives be without electricity. :-) -
See, I'm the anti-money maker. My blog is all about giving out winning selections in horse racing that allow other people to make money.
If someday a newspaper or network picks me up and says "yeah, that aspiring horseplayer guy sure knows what he's doing!" then great! If not, I could care less. I'm OCD enough to continue blogging even if no one is reading, but the fact that some of my readers actually make money off of my thoughts is truly the reward for me.

Hi everyone,
Well whether you are anti-$ maker or $ maker with your blogs... blogs are here to stay, and it is a great time to be a blogger!
I have a blog post that says this much:
www.successfulltime.com/blogging/it-is-a-great-time-to-be-a-blogger
Agree or don't agree with it... do check it out! cheers. -
I don't see blogging as a waste of time, but then again it depend with what you're goal -- if you want to earn quick money i don't think blogging is the answer because for you to able to warn money you have to work on you're traffic, content etc...but for me, i am doing it for money and at the same time to exercise me proper english grammar, and learn more....so for me my time is not wasted at all.
-
I think one shouldn't blog solely for the purpose of making money. Blog because you have something to say (even if its because you have something to say about making money), and if you build a stronger reader base, the money will follow.
-
I think there's a difference between blogging and blogging for money. Blogging for money is like a half time job. You have to go through your site statistics and analyze your visitor and what exactly do they need and when do they click on the ads and believe me it's not easy as it looks like.
I was shocked when I read that some bloggers are making over 8,000$ monthly from blogging. Blogging for money requires more than passion for blogging. It requires skills and knowledge.

it's depends on your purpose of blogging. once maybe one do blog just to get known and then get well known with massive traffic. finally they may go for making money via their blog.
as I said it is your own purpose. and if for whatever reason you are blogging, one must be persistent, dedicated and never give up, only then it will show result pertaining to your purpose.
All the Best. -
It depends on how you use your blog. To make money or not too! You use it as a landing page to presell the product you're promoting or you use it as an adsense site while your providing useful info to help or entertain people. In my opinion, one of the most important factors to making money with a blog is driving traffic to your blog site through niche market research, keyword & key phrase research, adwords and practice. But truely I don't think it's a waste of time because it gives people a chance to practice the skills they've learned to market products on the internet. And for the people who use blogs for more of a journal or info site it gives those people a chance to express and share with others their interesting stories, pics, etc. It is all useful for someone to learn by.

I do not think blogging is a waste of time. I have keep getting more and more of my long tailed keywords ranked on page 1 of the search engines due directly to my blogging. Websites are very static and much harder to get traffic to.
In my opinion blogging should be a absolute must for anyone trying to get there message out. Money usually comes later. I think this is why so many people give up, they expect to make significant money overnite. I took me 6 months to get to the first page of some of my keywords.
But I can say this as my sites grow, its becoming easier to get search engines to visit me. -

Blogging can be very lucrative if you have two things. First, if you have your site monetized properly, you can earn a lot. Second, you also need a lot of traffic. Exactly how much traffic is hard to say. For me, I would need about 5000-10,000 visitors per day to make a full time income from my blog.
Even if a blog doesn't make money, I don't think its a waste of time. It's give a voice to many who would otherwise be silent. -
Nice info jhyjek!! i'll keep that in mind

Only you can answer if it is a waste of time - a successful blogger works very hard in the early stages and then to maintain a successful blog is just as much work,
