Just curious what your thoughts are on using a site like blogger versus hosting your blog on your own. Advantages, disadvantages?

If you host your own blog it can increase the rank of the rest of your site (if your blog is tagged onto your website)

I host my own, the main reason is that I have the flexibility to do just about everything. I also use a Content Management Application Drupal. I find this way I can add and remove additional sections to the site, I.E. picture gallery or Forum.
Although it still early doors for my site with the ability to add new fetures to the site your give your readers more of a oppitunity to want to come back.-
Wordpress is what I used to use however I found that it is more geared toward just having a blog.
Drupal is similar however the number of plug in available is must higher. You can make a much better site with extra pages and section.
have at look at:
www.drupal.org

I use b2evolution ( b2evolution.net ), has a very effective built-in and plugins against spam. And is more geared towards flexibility and professional(ism) blogs, can be turned into a CMS if you want.
Host your own if you can, it is better and gives you complete control. Your main problem is the load of your site, especially when someone diggified one or many of your posts and it gets attention.
That's the advantage of using blogger.com, you don't have to worry about getting diggified. -
I suppose it depends on what you're trying to do with your blog. If you're looking for a bunch of hits (ie: lots of people reading your work) then you should probably start originally with a service like WordPress or Blogger to get some ranking (Blogger for example lists your blog in their Goggle Blog Search, which is helpful for newbies starting out) and then you could always host it yourself a bit later.
If you're writing for the passion of writing and to give yourself a feeling of awesomeness (aren't we all?! lol) then host it yourself. They always say, if you write it, they will come..
Good luck! -
Ditto on the flexibility of hosting your own blog. I felt restricted using Blogger.com. For someone just starting out you can host your own blog thru GoDaddy.com for as little as 3.99/mo. Setting up Wordpress is a cinch because they include it in your hosting plan now as well as a couple of lesser known blogging platforms.

If you are a serious blogger you should use only self hosted service. To host a Blog you dont have to spend so much. In our Hosting service www.hexahost.com/ we charge only $1 a month towards hosting.
Self hosting helps in many ways, for example
you can not use flash or scripts (java script) in sub domain based free service from wordpress. Where us in self hosted service you can.
Self hosted service creates a Brand for your self. In making money it helps a lot without any TOS that you normally agree with wordpress, blogger, tyepad or what ever. -
I use Blogger for 5 blogs...easy to work on and easy to maintain, but I also have a self hosted website through Hostgator.Hands down best service in the business...just look at the awards they have won.The customer service is bar none.Don't go anywhere else, especially these one dollar a month hosts. For $7.00 a month on Hostgator with the Baby Account(the mid-range option),you are receiving proven professional service with a track record that speaks for itself.
I recently had a slight problem with my website HeadlineTopics.com (still currently being built),
and within a few minutes I had a real LIVE technician typing to me directly though an instant messenger service. He coached me through the problem and it was resolved within 10 minutes.
You won't find that kind of service for one buck a month sorry.
Do the research. Use what works.Keep your sanity when bad things happen to your blog. Use Hostgator with cPanel. That is my advice.-
I appreciate the service provided to you by Hostgator. From your explanation i understand how much you love them as a service providers.
$1 a Month only for Blogs. It is possible to give quality support for that money. Take our service use 30 days of trail period. If you are not satisfied you money is back.
Best Quality is possible, cost is something to balance the act simple and get more customer in short span of time. -
