blogspot better than wordpress.com, blogspot powerfull in templating than wordpress.com. but more better to use wordpress in self hosted.
-
I think wordpress is better, as you can control all details you want, templates and everything, specially when you decide to use your own host, I recommend you keep using wordpress.
I use both, but results are mych better with wordpress

For the best FREE blogging solution I wouldn't recommend anything else but WordPress. You don't need to go self-hosted to enjoy WordPress, a free blog at wordpress.com will do.
-
Not sure what you mean by "simple"? They may have their limitations in terms of customization (how much can you possible do with, say, a two-column theme?), and I'd love to see more color schemes, but they're not simple. To me, a blog is about content, not about making a visual feast. But if you cannot fit your content into the themes supplied by free wordpress.com, well, in that case you better blog somewhere else.

well if we're talking about getting noticed by Google - then you gotta go with the Google product of Blogger haven't you?
No probs with my Blogger blog and we're now on 240+posts.
Sometimes the rss feed via feedburner doesn't always trigger an alert - but then it works fine later on.-
For getting noticed with Google you can go with any blogging platform. I haven't seen any significant difference which type of blogs that rank higher in search results. What matters more is optimizing your blog topic and blog posts, as in using keywords and tags correctly. In my opinion WordPress does a better job at that than Blogger.

Do as I did. Start with blogger and get used to blogging and then if you really want to make the great leap get your own domain and choose wordpress. It was tricky and it requires to be a little bit more web savy and clever. BUt if you don't care about making money or becoming a serious blogger (serious meaning to have an own domain) then just stick with blogger.
-
If "serious" is limited to having your own domain, then free-hosted wordpress.com will do just fine. And that is not tricky at all.

but you will have the wordpress name and not your own dot com. Having an own dot com gave me more traffic power and also you can earn money. You cannot in wordpress.com
-
WRONG! You can have ANY domain name if you have a blog at wordpress.com

As far as money goes, yes, it is a bit limited but not totally off limits.

Wordpress plugins and widget are great stuff. You just need to activate that. I find download monitor very useful. Here Only registered User can access your file for download.

I wrote a long, overly detailed post about the issue. Check it out
Basically, though, I think Wordpress is the best. -

I would never ever go for something free with a banner on top...yuk!
At wordpress.com you can have a domain and map it to your WordPress blog for $15/yr. If you cannot even afford that... -
No money? Domain is less than $10. I know web host less than a gallon of gas a month. You telling me you can't afford less than $50 a year?
That is what's wrong with people these days. Always trying to go at things for free. If you blogging for fun than pick blogspot or wordpress. If you serious wait until you get your paycheck if you have a job.
For everybody looking for cheap hosting go to www.kushmoney.com and click on the banner to get 99% off first month. Hosting is $2.95 a month. Subscribe to kushmoney.com while you there. I am talking with other companies to get my readers better deals on domains and more.

A key factor is whether or not you want to have advertising. In the post at the link below you will find the differences between free hosted wordpress.com blogs and self hosted wordpress.org installs that can be used on your own domain.
(1) blogger initiated advertising is *NOT* allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs;
faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/
(2) the only exceptions made are for VIP bloggers
wordpress.com/vip-hosting
(3) wordpress.com is already running adsense on our blogs and, on the global tag pages wordpress.com/blog/2006/09/06/on-ads
(4) Only one account for Google adsense can be placed on any blog and on free-hosted wordpress.com blogs that account is held by Automattic on behalf of their project which is wordpress.com
At the head of the wordpress.com support forum is this sticky post that clearly describes the differences between wordpress.com blogs and wordpress.org free self-hosting software en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1
In the FAQs one can use the search box and easily find faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/wordpresscom-vs-wordpressorg/
My best advice is that if you know where you are headed towards a monetized blog then get a domain, get a web host, download the free software from wordpress.org and set up your blog with advertising on it right from the beginning.
The details for purchasing a domain and domain mapping from wordpress.com are found here. faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/
My blog post on this subject is here onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/06/26/how-and-why-to-get-your-own-domain/
IMO the allegation that google search engine prefers Blogspot blogs is unfounded.
I hope this helps you. Happy blogging

let me get things straight....if you want to make money and at the same time you want to start from scratch, then try Blogger...if you want to make more money and you have some money, then try wordpress.org (paid version). If you don't have any money and you don't want to make money, then again go for Blogspot.
Wordpress.com is just a waste of time( you can't even have entrecard widget in it)-
Web hosting is not necessarily expensive and it's a basic business principle that if you want to make money, you have to spend money. Indeed if one spends a little money in order to make a little money by hiring a web host and downloading free self hosted wordpress.org software then they can download the free entrecard plugin. WordPress Plugin Entrecard Popper myblogit.net/2008/05/23/wordpress-plugin-entrecard-popper/
Alternatively, if you have no money at all that you wish to invest then go with Blogger as it's owned by Google and you can advertise on a free hosted Blogspot blog. The downside to having a blogspot blog is that there are many spam blogs and splogs being hosted by Blogger and that their support is very poor. So another consideration is how much you know about blogging and how much support you will require. -
If you want to make money and at the same time you want to start from scratch FOR FREE, then try Blogger.
If you want to make more money and you have some money, then try wordpress.org (paid version) OR any other blogging solution that allows commercial content.
timethief is an excellent proponent for wordpress.org, but there are more than only that option around.

- if you (very-very) serious you must have self hosted. you must think money that you must pay is invesment. And wordpress script is the best choice.
- but if you still with the free... blogger.com more interesting and easy than wordpress.com -
I used both. Blogspot makes it easier for me than wordpress. It's free! I have 4 blogspot sites(meneaters.blogspot.com, foodelity.blogspot.com, mailboxatrandom.blogspot.com and techalang.blogspot.com). My selfhosted site is from wordpress: obnoxiousqueer.com . So I guess you have the idea then.
-
blogspot rules, so much simpler.
