I'm listening to "Tangled Up In Blue" by Bob Dylan.

He gets my vote as the best songwriter that has ever lived.

Who gets your vote?

    Lennon/McCartney
    by a mile

Dylan's songs may be good but I don't like his singing very much.. because of which I may not appreciate his songwriting more..
For instance when I first heard "Like a rolling Stone" I didn't understand the hype behind the song.. until I later heard the Hendrix version

I second Leonard Cohen. My list of the best contemporary (if that's the correct label for the timeframe I'm considering) songwriters is:
      (1) Leonard Cohen
      (2) Bob Dylan
      (3) John Lennon
      (4) Woodie Guthrie
      (5) Joni Mitchell
      (6) Kurt Cobain
      (7) Billy Bragg
      (8) Van Morrison
      (9) Pink Floyd

leonard is over dylan for me too. even though I'm born and bred minnesotan, i like dylan a lot, but would rather be stuck in a room with cohen any day of the millenium.

agree with many of TT's picks... love mitchell and guthrie and lennon and cobain and morrison and a few people i'm too ____ to think of right now.

@timethief yes I heard great raves about the artist. I will check it out. I did hear one track through a Celtic radio.

I'd agree that Dylan is #1. Lennon/McCartney wrote some great songs, but most of them sound dated now while Dylan's stand the test of time. Hunter/Garcia also wrote a lot of good songs. Gotta put Robbie Robertson in the top five. John Fogerty, too.

Lennon. Also worthy of mention Ulvaeus /Andersson of ABBA, they wrote some great music, very clever artists perhaps it's only in recent years their work has been trult appreciated.
