The humor niche is a tough nut to crack. I've plodded along with my new humor blog for about two months with minimal action but enjoying the outlet. I've used my usual promotion methods of entrecard, project wonderful, some forum posts.
Last week two things bonked me on the head: the power of search engine traffic (www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/my-first-google-traffic-explosion) and back links from a big dog blog. My first google paydirt brought over 1,000 hits to one post in one day. Break Media, a popular men's humor network with thousands of subscribers, back linked to my post and brought over 900 unique visitors in a day. (Warning: not for the prim & propper

I'm sharing this because 1) none of my friends "get" blogging and cannot relate to my euphoria and 2) I never paid much attention to either of these traffic sources, instead settling for maybe 100 hits a day from the methods mentioned above. If you can relate to where I'm coming from, I encourage you to connect with top blogs in your niche and see what happens. I didn't ask for the link back, just attributed a source in my post. I may never get that kind of traffic again, but it sure opened my eyes.

Congrats. Yes, commenting on top blogs can bring results, though it depends on your niche. Is that what you did initially? Or did they just find you?

I am still waiting for the day someone links to one of my blogs that has over 1 million viewers a day. If I live long enough to see it happen.
