Huh? is this real? I have the tv on but not in the room. I was watching it but they didnt start running at that time just yakking tons so I walked away.

It didnt disappear. I just saw our news, I live in the area. They got sneaky. They moved the runner and torch by bus over to Van Ness to do the run. Nobody is there so all those down by the wharf will be stuck in traffic. None of those protesting can get there fast with all the daily traffic. Sneaky!

Hard to believe. What's the point?

yep, i just read it on the news, seanymph is right - they changed the route at the last minute, as the mayor said they would probably do. loads of people missed seeing it and called it the Houdini torch, but it did not actually disappear.

So the big question is why did they put SF thru the pain and expense? The IOC knew there would be demonstrators a few days back. So why not just call it off rather than pissing off the regular SF citizens who stood in line to watch for several hours.

As I understand it the new route was naturally people-free as no-one expected them to be there. But, if the IOC deemed it essential to do something on US soil, they may as well have run round SFO airport, while their plane refueled and saved the screwing about, and creating the inevitable ill-feeling that their inconsiderate sneakiness will bring to a much wider audience.

How is that a big question? I could think of a few that are more pressing.

    what happens when that happens?

Well apparently some protesters surrounded a bus they thought carried the runners in and were not going to let it leave so SF decided to pull a switcheroo. Even worse........no closing ceremony either just get em to the SFO airport and maybe they did a ceremony and poof .....gone. So millions of $$$ spent for this fiasco for what? Honestly I hope they stop the flame from going anywhere. With the world they way it is why subject cities to the expense and people to danger? I think these Olympics as it is will be a dangerous place to be. I do believe there will be big trouble.
